Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colour-Blindness and Colour-Perception This book is essentially practical. The observations are based on the careful examination of 116 colour-blind persons and of all the recorded cases to which I could obtain access. I should be glad to hear from any colour blind person concerning his views on colour, and the difficulties which he has encountered. I have obtained much valuable information from colour-blind persons relating to facts concerning their colour-perception which they have found inconsistent with the ordinarily accepted views. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theories of Color-Perception Objections to Young's Hypothesis on Physical ground8.-in the first place, the retina, in addition to its function as a receiving and transmitting organ, is made by this theory into a differentiating apparatus as well. This is rendered necessary because of Young's disbelief in the capacity of the retina to act as a receptacle for vibrations after the manner of simple bodies. There is something remarkable in a kind of hitch we some times find in the intellectual workings of even our greatest men. It has always been a wonder to scientists that Newton, with a mental power capable of originating so far-reaching a theory as the law of gravitation, should pass by the undulatory theory of Huygens as not capable of explain ing phenomena of light.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hunterian Lectures on Colour-Vision and Colour-Blindness: Delivered Before the Royal College of Surgeons of England on February 1st and 3rd, 1911 As there are many who are interested in the subject of vision and colour-blindness who are not acquainted with the structure of the eye, I will give a few details so that these persons may be able to consider the problem from the point of view of these lectures. The eye is very similar to a photographic camera, and an actual image is formed on the back of the eye just as it is on the plate of the photographic camera or on the view-finder. The eye possesses a lens and also an iris which acts as an adjustable stop and regulates the size of the pupil. The membrane at the back of the eye upon which the image is formed is called the retina. The retina has several layers, but the sensitive layer consists of two elements called, from their shape, rods and cones. The problem therefore which has to be considered is, how is the light which forms the image on the sensitive layer of the retina transformed into visual impulses? Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of Colour Vision Classic Reprint written by John Herbert Parsons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Colour Vision HE vast literature on colour vision consists almost entirely of papers written in support of some particular theory. It is peculiarly difficult to obtain a general and unbiassed view of the subject. I have here endeavoured to separate the best established facts of colour vision from the theories, and have then discussed the chief theories in the light of these facts. I wish to express my great indebtedness to Sir William Abney, Professor W. Watson, and Dr Myers for their invaluable assistance in a very difficult task, which demands a not inconsiderable knowledge of such diverse subjects as physics, physiology, and psychology. The chief references to the literature have been given in footnotes. The frequent references to Abney are to his Researches in Colour Vision (london, and to V. Helmholtz to his Hand buch der physiologischen Optik. In the latter case each of the three editions contains material which is absent from the others, and the exact reference is given in the footnote. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Color-Vision and Color-Blindness: A Practical Manual for Railroad Surgeons The dangers of defective Form and Color-sense in railway employés have been set forth so convincingly by the medical profession, both individually and by resolu tions of representative medical bodies, that today practically every railroad company in the country re quires employés to be examined as to their color-sense, vision and hearing. Much of this good work has been done since the publication of this manual in 1896. In preparing a second edition of this book for the press the whole has been carefully revised and the following new matter added. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Color-Names, Color-Blindness, and the Education of the Color-Sense in Our Schools Investigation of a railroad accident in Sweden, supposed to be due to color-blindness, led Dr. F. Holmgren, professor of physiology in the University of Upsala, to the belief that the defect must be ftc quent, and hence dangerous on both land and sea. Difficulty arose as to any certain method of detecting it quickly. The absence of any such method has been the especial reason why the defect has hitherto escaped observation. Using the theory of young-helmholtz, and applying a test suggested by Seebeck, he finally brought out his now well-known method with the colored worsteds. By this, and the imitations of it devised here and there, large numbers of persons have been examined all over the world, including both sexes, all colors, ages, and degrees of civilizations, etc. It is a curious fact, that till the expert could test quickly and accurately, the existence of color blindness to the extent now proved remained unknown. It is now admitted that four per cent. Of males are more or less color-blind, and in females not over one-fourth of one per cent. Are thus affected. My own tests, up to the time of writing this, are of males 801 were color-blind, whilst I found but 1 1 females among defect ive in their chromatic sense.
