Book excerpt: The New Contract which came into force on April 1st 1990 includes proposals for the provision of minor surgery services by the General Practitioner. The aim of this book is to assist those doctors undertaking minor surgery in their Practices. It is intended to present a practical, clear and concise text. This is accompanied by easy to follow illustrations. The contents of the book are governed by two considerations. Firstly, it covers only those procedures which are safe for the patient. Secondly, it only includes minor surgery which it is possible for the ordinary General Practitioner in a busy practice to undertake. Vll Chapter One The Advantages of Minor Surgery in General Practice Minor Surgery:- Despite this descriptive term, no surgery can be considered "minor" no matter where it is carried out! It requires a knowledge of anatomy and basic surgical principles. There must be an understanding of the procedures and technical skills required. Careful planning is needed at all stages. Arrangements must also be made to deal with any complications and disasters which may occur. Having stated these provisos, however, surgical procedures can and should be an important part of general practice within the British National Health Service (NHS). There are many advantages to be gained, both for patient and doctor, when minor surgery is undertaken by the general practitioner.

Book excerpt: The latest edition of Minor Surgery carries on the highly respected tradition of the well known earlier editions in providing a superbly illustrated step-by-step guide to minor surgery. As previously, the book begins by placing minor surgery into context with a description of the setting up, equipping and running of a minor operations facility in a primary health care setting. Methods of anaesthesia follow. The text then goes on to describe over 40 surgical procedures in step-by-step detail, accompanied by colour photographs and line drawings. The authority and clarity of the text owe much to the author's own experience of over 20,000 minor operations. All sections have been revised, some reflect improved techniques and others take into account the wishes of those doctors who undertake more complex minor surgical procedures. The latter are incorporated into the Advanced Minor Surgery section, which includes the technique of radio-surgery. A new chapter on the role of the Practice Nurse/Operating Theatre Assistant is included, acknowledging the vital role they play. Another important new chapter features biopsy techniques, allowing for prompt diagnosis of skin cancer. As a new addition, specialists in their field have been invited to write a chapter giving information on how to improve the results of minor surgery. This Specialist Minor Surgery Section contains contributions from a consultant plastic surgeon, consultant ophthalmologist and dental surgeon.

Book Practice Management Compendium

Download or read book Practice Management Compendium written by John Fry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Practice is undergoing the most major series of changes since the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948. They concern both concepts of care and practical details of the way care is delivered. In spite of the hostility generated by the changes most of the broad general concepts have been accepted. The principle of patients having more choice is widely supported, the inclusion of preventive medicine and anticipatory care in the responsibilities of practice has few opponents, the introduction of audit as a way of improving performance has been generally welcomed. Even the idea of putting GPs in better financial management of patients and drug budgets has had supporters in principle. The antipathy has generally related to the method of introduction of these changes. One important concern has been the time requirements of the New Contract and the feeling that these will erode the real nature of our work: the close personal relationship with patients. If we improve the quality of our management this is less likely to happen. We shall be able to work within the New Contract and retain the quality of service we pro vide. If we improve the understanding of our staff of what we are trying to achieve we are more likely to reach the targets that we set whilst keeping people happy. vii This book sets out to explain the New Contract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Regional Minor Surgery: Describing the Treatment of Those Conditions Daily Encountered by General Practitioner In writing this little volume, it has been the aim to avoid subjects of a technical character as far as possible, for it was rather intended to describe the lesions coming under the heading of minor surgery and their treatment, than to give directions for procedures with which every advanced student is familiar. No bibliography has been given, and very few references to other writers, both for brevity's sake and because, with very few exceptions, these pages represent the result of personal Observation during eighteen years of considerable work in dis pensaries and private and hospital practice. During these years the writer has become more and more impressed with the importance of minor surgery. This term, While a useful one from the standpoint of a rough classification, must in other respects be considered an improper one. Minor surgery is minor in name only, since the most trivial injury may be followed by disastrous results, and the only way.
