Book Frontiers in Colorado Paleoindian Archaeology

Download or read book Frontiers in Colorado Paleoindian Archaeology written by Robert H. Brunswig and published by . This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Ice Age waned, Clovis hunter-gatherers began to explore and colonize the area now known as Colorado. Their descendents and later Paleoindian migrants spread throughout Colorado's plains and mountains, adapting to diverse landforms and the changing climate. In this new volume, Robert H. Brunswig and Bonnie L. Pitblado assemble experts in archaeology, paleoecology-climatology, and paleofaunal analysis to share new discoveries about these ancient people of Colorado. The editors introduce the research with scientific context. A review of seventy-five years of Paleoindian archaeology in Colorado highlights the foundation on which new work builds, and a survey of Colorado's ancient climates and ecologies helps readers understand Paleoindian settlement patterns. Eight essays discuss archaeological evidence from Plains to high Rocky Mountain sites. The book offers the most thorough analysis to date of Dent--the first Clovis site discovered. Essays on mountain sites show how advances in methodology and technology have allowed scholars to reconstruct settlement patterns and changing lifeways in this challenging environment. Colorado has been home to key moments in human settlement and in the scientific study of our ancient past. Readers interested in the peopling of the New World as well as those passionate about the methods and history of archaeology will find new material and satisfying overviews in this book. Contributors include Rosa Maria Albert, Robert H. Brunswig, Reid A. Bryson, Linda Scott Cummings, James Doerner, Daniel C. Fisher, David L. Fox, Bonnie L. Pitblado, Jeffrey L. Saunders, Todd A. Surovell, R. A. Varney, and Nicole M. Waguespack.

  • Author : John Bradford Branney
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2013-04
  • ISBN : 9781612961910
  • Pages : 282 pages

Download or read book Shadows on the Trail written by John Bradford Branney and published by . This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shadows on the Trail takes place on the plains and mountains of Texas and Colorado at the end of the Ice Age, a time of escalating temperatures, melting glaciers, and large mammal extinctions. It was a time when small bands of humans fought to survive in a violent and unpredictable world. This is a tale of three prehistoric tribes whose paths collide, culminating into an emotional thriller filled with the devastating forces of nature, predatory animals, and human emotion. The seed for Shadows on the Trail sprouted on an early summer morning in 2010 on a northern Colorado ranch where the author found an Ice Age stone tool made from a red and gray striped rock from a prehistoric rock quarry from the Panhandle of Texas. How did this stone tool end up in a prehistoric campsite in northern Colorado? Who made it? What was he or she like? What happened on its journey from Texas to northern Colorado? Since it was impossible to ask the prehistoric maker of the stone tool these questions, the author wrote his version of this remarkable journey.

Book Colorado Prehistory

Download or read book Colorado Prehistory written by Christian J. Zier and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document and four parallel volumes, which collectively cover the entire state of Colorado, have been prepared by various organizations under contract to the Colorado Council of Professional Archaeologists. The respective regions addressed by the five documents are defined according to hydrologic criteria and coincide with the four major drainage basins within the state: Colorado River, Rio Grande, South Platte River, and Arkansas River. The headwaters of these four great rivers occur within the state of the Continental Divide. Becuase of the sheer size of the area, and also due to various cultural considerations, the Colorado River watershed has been divided into upper (northern) and lower (southern) regions, and thus fiver rather than four documents have been generated.
