Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coloring books became a thing when adults discovered how relaxing and meditative they were. Jigsaw puzzles roared back into popularity as an immersive activity, not to mention a great alternative to television. How exciting is it, then, to introduce an activity that tops them both: reverse coloring, which not only confers the mindful benefits of coloring and puzzling but energizes you to feel truly creative, even when you're weary and just want to zone out. It's so simple, yet so profoundly satisfying. Each page in The Reverse Coloring Book has the colors, and you draw the lines. Created by the artist Kendra Norton, these beautiful and whimsical watercolors provide a gentle visual guide so open-ended that the possibilities are limitless. Trace the shapes, draw in figures, doodle, shade, cover an area with dots. Be realistic, with a plan, or simply let your imagination drift, as if looking a clouds in the sky. Each page is an invitation to slow down, let go, and thoughtfully (or thoughtlessly) let your pen find its way over the image. The Reverse Coloring Book includes 50 original works of art, printed on sturdy paper that's single-sided and perforated. And unlike with traditional coloring books, all you need is a pen.

Book The Day in Its Color

  • Author : Eric Sandweiss
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book The Day in Its Color written by Eric Sandweiss and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Cushman (1896-1972) photographed a disappearing world in living color. Cushman's midcentury America--a place normally seen only through a scrim of gray--reveals itself as a place as vivid and real as the view through our window. The Day in Its Color introduces readers to Cushman's extraordinary work, a recently unearthed archive of photographs that is the largest known body of early color photographs by a single photographer, 14,500 in all, most shot on vivid, color-saturated Kodachrome stock. From 1938-1969, Cushman--a sometime businessman and amateur photographer with an uncanny eye for everyday detail--travelled constantly, shooting everything he encountered as he ventured from New York to New Orleans, Chicago to San Francisco, and everywhere in between. His photos include portraits, ethnographic studies, agricultural and industrial landscapes, movie sets and media events, children playing, laborers working, and thousands of street scenes, all precisely documented in time and place. The result is a chronicle of an era almost never seen, or even envisioned, in color. This well-preserved collection is all the more remarkable for having gone undiscovered for decades. What makes the photos most valuable, however, is the wide range of subjects, landscapes, and moods it captures--snapshots of a lost America as yet untouched by a homogenizing overlay of interstate highways, urban renewal, chain stores, and suburban development--a world of hand-painted signs, state fairs, ramshackle shops, small town living and bustling urban scenes. The book also reveals the fascinating and startling life story of the man who stood, unseen, on the other side of the lens, surely one of America's most impressive amateur photographers and outsider artists. With over 150 gorgeous color prints, The Day in Its Color gives us one of the most evocative visual histories of mid-20th century America that we have.

Book excerpt: Failure or success in a life is often calculated on what a man owns. A man with nothing, no steady job, not even a driver's license, is judged a failure to the rest of the world. When Dayton Sandoval lands unexpectedly in a small New Mexico town, he knows he will earn a few dollars, learn a few names, and be gone before entanglements hobble and hold him. It's a familiar pattern, what he does, how he survives. But it doesn't work out that way -- not at all. Because of an old woman, a rank horse, and the child who loves him . . . and a distant and fearful lady. As Dayton Sandoval allows these three women to need him, as he learns to love and care for them, he will pull apart the devastation of his past and find a completed and whole man where he thought lay only ancient, unhealing wounds.

Download or read book Day Out of Days written by Sam Shepard and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-01-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of our most admired writers: a collection of stories set mainly in the fertile imaginative landscape of the American West, written with the terse lyricism, cinematic detail, and wry humor that have become Sam Shepard’s trademarks. A man traveling down Highway 90 West gets trapped alone overnight inside a Cracker Barrel restaurant, where he is tormented by an endless loop of Shania Twain songs on the overhead sound system. A wandering actor returns to his hometown against his better instincts and runs into an old friend, who recounts their teenage days of stealing cars, scoring Benzedrine, and sleeping with whores in Tijuana. A Minnesota family travels south for a winter vacation but, caught up in the ordinary tyrannies of family life, remains oblivious to the beauty of the Yucatán Peninsula. A solitary horse rancher muses on Sitting Bull and Beckett amid the jumble of stuff in his big country kitchen—from rusted spurs and Lakota dream-catchers to yellowing pictures of hawks and galloping horses to “snapshots of different sons in different shirts doing different things like fishing, riding mules and tractors; leaning up against their different mothers at radical angles.” Made up of short narratives, lyrics, and dialogues, Day out of Days sets conversation against tale, song against memory, in a cubistic counterpoint that finally links each piece together. The result is a stunning work of vision and clarity imbued with the vivid reverberations of myth—Shepard at his flinty-eyed, unwavering best.

She came to realize that even those descendants embraced diversity. Carrie enjoys reading history and cultural humanitarian stories. Her hobbies are writing and editing books and poetry. Stovall, Ph.D. Carrie attended public schools in the suburbs of California cities. She is a graduate of Redlands University in Redlands, California, and California Polytechnic University in Pomona, California. She holds a Master of Arts in Management and a Bachelor in Humanities English. She was the first of three children to obtain a college degree. For more than 30 years in the workforce, Carrie worked for major corporations as manager of procedural writing, manager and director of internal auditing; and as a paralegal and office manager.
