Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indians of coastal Long Island were closely attuned to their maritime environment. They hunted sea mammals, fished in coastal waters, and harvested shellfish. To celebrate the deep-water spirits, they sacrificed the tail and fins of the most powerful and awesome denizen of their maritime world—the whale. These Native Americans were whalemen, integral to the origin and development of the first American whaling enterprise in the years 1650 to 1750. America’s Early Whalemen examines this early chapter of an iconic American historical experience. John A. Strong’s research draws on exhaustive sources, domestic and international, including little-known documents such as the whaling contracts of 340 Native American whalers, personal accounting books of whaling company owners, London customs records, estate inventories, and court records. Strong addresses labor relations, the role of alcohol and debt, the patterns of cultural accommodations by Native Americans, and the emergence of corporate capitalism in colonial America. When Strong began teaching at Long Island University in 1964, he found little mention of the local Indigenous people in history books. The Shinnecocks and the neighboring tribes of Unkechaugs and Montauketts were treated as background figures for the celebratory narrative of the “heroic” English settlers. America’s Early Whalemen highlights the important contributions of Native peoples to colonial America.

Book excerpt: People of African descent have played an integral role in Long Island's history, just as they make essential contributions to this region's present and future. Dutch merchants brought the first enslaved Africans to what is now Manhattan in 1626; recognizing the value of this forced labor, they imported additional enslaved men and women from Africa and the Caribbean to help build the growing colony. Concurrently, English settlers started new communities on eastern Long Island, including Gardiner's Island (1639), Southold and Southampton (1640), and East Hampton (1648); they began bringing enslaved Africans to these communities in the 1650s. A century later, in 1749, enslaved Africans comprised 34% of the population of Kings County, 17% of Queens County, and 14% of Suffolk County. Overall, New York had more enslaved people than any colony north of Maryland during the colonial period. For over two centuries, enslaved people of color performed vital domestic, industrial, and agricultural labor throughout the region. At the same time, they struggled to survive in often challenging circumstances, to maintain their own cultural identity, and to resist the institution that bound them. Thanks to the allied efforts of Black and white antislavery advocates, New York State finally abolished slavery in 1827. Yet some legacies of slavery - especially patterns of systemic racism and persistent economic inequality - stubbornly endure on Long Island to this day. Many people have little knowledge or awareness of this critical story. To correct this historical amnesia, we must both reflect on why the damaging effects of slavery have been so long obscured and honor the many contributions of Black Long Islanders to our shared heritage - through continued research, preservation, and celebration.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Long Island: A Colonial Study Within the cabin of his storm-worn ship, an chored off the old seaport town of Dieppe, a returned navigator, in the midsummer of 1524, addressed to the most picturesque of French kings, a "Relation" in which is the first authentic mention in history of Long Island. Recent criticism has sought to doubt the authenticity of this letter of Verrazano, sent to the Court at Avigno, and preserved to us in a contemporary copy.
