This book was released on 2016-09-15T00:00:00Z with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadians are proud of their multicultural image both at home and abroad. But that image isn’t grounded in historical facts. As recently as the 1960s, the Canadian government enforced discriminatory, anti-Black immigration policies, designed to restrict and prohibit the entry of Black Barbadians and Black West Indians. The Canadian state capitalized on the public’s fear of the “Black unknown” and racist stereotypes to justify their exclusion. In Flying Fish in the Great White North, Christopher Stuart Taylor utilizes the intersectionality of race, gender and class to challenge the perception that Blacks were simply victims of racist and discriminatory Canadian and international immigration policies by emphasizing the agency and educational capital of Black Barbadian emigrants during this period. In fact, many Barbadians were middle to upper class and were well educated, and many, particularly women, found autonomous agency and challenged the very Canadian immigration policies designed to exclude them.

Download or read book Cricket Nurseries of Colonial Barbados written by Keith A. P. Sandiford and published by Kingston, Jamaica : Press University of the West Indies. This book was released on 1998 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work offers an intriguing and important analysis of the role played by three prestigious grammar schools - Combermere School, Harrison College and the Loge School- in establishing the cricket cult in Barbados and ultimately throughout the Caribbean. It goes far towards explaining why Barbadians have traditionally played such excellent cricket. This book is the first to make such extensive use of Barbadian school magazines as primary sources for the study of social history. The author stresses the statistical first class records of about 200 alumni of the three schools and in so doing furnishes sport sociologists with a considerable new body of empirical data for future use. Although it focuses on a Barbadian situation, the book should interest cricket enthusiasts everywhere with its many photographs and its lucid and candid treatment of some of the most important personalities in regional and world cricket, a few of whom are still actively involved in the sport today.

Download or read book Decolonization and the Other written by Sharon C. Sewell and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962 Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago became independent countries; Barbados followed in 1966. In the years leading up to these events, the history of the British West Indies was written largely by the British, the colonial power, who focused on the process of decolonization and the key local players involved. After independence, local scholars also focused on the role of political leaders in the newly independent countries. To date, scholars have paid little attention to the impact of these events on the local populations of these islands. Decolonization and the Other: The Case of the British West Indies explores the local perspectives on, and reactions to, events by using West Indian literature to supplement the historical record. Beginning in the 1930s when local demands for political participation increased, through the process of decolonization, and into the early years of independence, West Indian writers used their life experiences to document local reaction. West Indian literature first appeared in 1950, when British publishers became interested in island authors and their novels. By using the novels to supplement the historical record, we can gain a better understanding of the process of decolonization and the early years of independence in the British West Indies.
Download or read book Combermere School and the Barbadian Society written by Keith A. P. Sandiford and published by Barbados : The Press, University of the West Indies. This book was released on 1995 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by two former students of perhaps one of the Caribbean's most famous educational institutions, book elucidates school's evolution and analyzes its contribution to the development of Barbadian society. Although scarcity of adequate documentation results in an uneven treatment of different periods, work examines roles of various headmasters and their administrations in the school's evolution. Additionally, work places Combermere, and the changes it underwent, within the larger framework of societal changes that Barbados experienced. Useful case study. -Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58
