Book excerpt: The interaction between a probe and a plasma has been studied since the 1920s and the pioneering work of Mott-Smith and Langmuir [1], and is still today an active topic of experimental and theoretical research. Indeed an understanding of the current collection process by an electrode is relevant to diverse matters such as Langmuir and Mach-probes calibrations, dusty plasma physics, or spacecraft charging. Recent simulations relying on the ad hoc designed code SCEPTIC have fully addressed the collisionless and unmagnetized problem for a drifting collector idealized as a sphere. SCEPTIC is a 2d/3v hybrid Particle In Cell (PIC) code, in which the ion motion is fully resolved, while the electrons are treated as a Boltzmann distributed fluid [2, 3]. In the present work we tackle the transition between the unmagnetized and the weakly magnetized regime of ion collection by a spherical probe (The mean ion Larmor radius rL> rp) in a collisionless plasma (The ion mean free path Am, fp> rp). When the sphere is at space potential, we demonstrate that the ion current dependence on the background magnetic field B is linear for low B, and provide analytical expressions for this dependence. When the probe potential can not be neglected, the problem shows two distinct scale lengths: A collisionless layer of a few rp close to the probe, followed by a collisional presheath of a few AX, fp. The chosen approach is to resolve the collisionless scale-length with SCEPTIC, while using appropriate outer boundary conditions on the potential and ion distribution function to connect with the unresolved collisional presheath. We present results of our numerical simulations for a wide range of plasma parameters of direct relevance to Langmuir and Mach-probes.

Book excerpt: The interaction of an ion-collecting sphere at floating potential with a flowing collisionless plasma is investigated using the particle in cell code SCEPTIC. The dependence of floating potential on flow velocity for a conducting sphere is found to agree very well with the OML approximation, which ignores the asymmetry in the plasma potential. But the charge, even on conducting spheres and at zero flow, is not well represented by using the standard expression for capacitance. Insulating spheres become asymmetrically charged because of ion collection asymmetry, and their total (negative) charge is considerably increased by flow. The collection flux asymmetry is documented for both conducting and insulating spheres and is not greatly different between them. The drag force upon the sphere is obtained from the code calculations. It shows reasonable agreement with appropriate analytic approximations. However, numerical discrepancies up to 20% are found, which are attributed to uncertainties in the analytical values.

New ideas have emerged, such as the compact torus, surface-field devices, and the EßT mirror-torus hybrid, and some old ideas, such as the stellarator and the reversed-field pinch, have been revived. Radiofrequency heat ing has become a new star with its promise of dc current drive. Perhaps most importantly, great progress has been made in the understanding of the MHD behavior of toroidal plasmas: tearing modes, magnetic Vll Vlll islands, and disruptions.

Book excerpt: Interest in the problem of interaction between radiation and astrophysical plasmas arose decades ago. Initially, this was closely related to the discovery of radio emission from the Sun and Galaxy which alerted theoretical radio astronomers to the problem of the origin of extra-terrestrial radio emission. It has been found that the observed radio emission from cosmic sources is generated by virtue of the mechanisms which work mainly in plasma (an ionized gas). Recently, the theory of generation and propagation of radiation in astrophysical plasmas has outgrown its parent domain of theoretical radio astronomy and is being successfully applied to other fields, such as high-energy astrophysics. General results obtained in this field may also help to better understand the complicated phenomena in laboratory plasmas on the Earth. At the same time, analysis of interaction between radiation and astrophysical plasmas under extreme conditions (strong magnetic fields of white dwarfs and neutron stars or strong gravitational fields in the vicinity of black holes) stimulates the development of plasma physics as a whole. In fact, the physics of plasma under extreme conditions in space is a new branch of fundamental science. The monograph contains the description of physical processes involved in interaction between radiation and astrophysical plasmas. It comprises the reasonable minimum necessary for understanding the emission and propagation of electromagnetic waves in astrophysical plasmas; without this minimum one could not succeed in interpreting the results of a number of astronomical observations. Audience: This monograph will be useful for graduate and post-graduate students and young scientists as a textbook on plasma astrophysics and the issues of plasma physics dealing with radiation. At the same time, the book can be used by specialists on astrophysics, radio astronomy and plasma physics.
