Book Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy of Neutron Rich Indium Isotopes

Download or read book Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy of Neutron Rich Indium Isotopes written by Adam Robert Vernon and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-31 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the application of the collinear resonance laser spectroscopy to sensitively measure the electromagnetic nuclear observables of the neutron-rich indium isotopes 115-131In. This entailed a systematic study of the efficiency of resonant ionization schemes to extract the hyperfine structure of the isotopes, the atomic charge exchange process and benchmarking of modern atomic calculations with a laser ablation ion source. This allowed determination of the root-mean-square nuclear charge radii, nuclear magnetic dipole moments, nuclear electric quadrupole moments and nuclear spins of the 113-131In isotopes with high accuracy. With a proton hole in the Z = 50 nuclear shell closure of tin and several nuclear isomer states, these measurements of the indium (Z = 49) isotope chain provided an efficient probe of the evolution of nuclear structure properties towards and at the doubly-magic nuclear shell closure of 132Sn (N = 82) - revealing unpredicted changes.

Book Laser Assisted Nuclear Decay Spectroscopy

Download or read book Laser Assisted Nuclear Decay Spectroscopy written by Kara Marie Lynch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work details an application of collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy for the separation of short-lived isomeric states and their subsequent study with decay spectroscopy. It reports the successful construction of a novel decay spectroscopy apparatus that can operate at pressures below 1 x 10^-9 mbar. The method is demonstrated by separating the nuclear ground and isomeric states of 204Fr and performing alpha-decay spectroscopy. An equivalent mass spectrometer would require 4.6 million times as much resolution to achieve the same result. This work unambiguously confirms the existence of a second isomeric state in 204Fr. The author also demonstrates the effectiveness of this method for laser spectroscopy and identification of hyperfine-structure components with energy tagging. This method was successfully used in 202Fr to identify ground and isomeric states. The measurement of 202Fr reported in this thesis demonstrates a factor of 100 improvement in sensitivity compared to state-of-the-art fluorescence techniques. The work reported in this thesis won the author the IOP Nuclear Physics Group Early Career Prize.

Book Isotope Shift and Hyperfine Structure Measurements on Silver Actinium and Astatine by In source Resonant Ionization Laser Spectroscopy

Download or read book Isotope Shift and Hyperfine Structure Measurements on Silver Actinium and Astatine by In source Resonant Ionization Laser Spectroscopy written by Andrea Teigelhöfer and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resonant ionization laser ion sources are applied worldwide to increase purity and intensity of rare isotopes at radioactive ion beam facilities. Especially for heavy elements the laser wavelengths required for efficient resonant laser ionization are not only element dependent, but also vary to small degrees from isotope to isotope. Since the first operation of an actinide target at ISAC-TRIUMF in 2008, the demand for neutron-rich isotopes far away from stability has steadily increased. Those isotopes often have very low production rates so that often only a few ions per second are released. In order to study isotope shifts and hyperfine structure of silver, actinium and astatine, in-source resonant ionization spectroscopy in combination with radioactive decay detection has been applied. Despite the Doppler limited resolution, it has the advantage that it is ultra-sensitive and the atomic spectrum for the nuclear ground and isomeric states can be investigated individually. An isobaric separation has been demonstrated for 115-119Ag, where the hyperfine structure of one state showed a splitting of 22 GHz to 38 GHz while for the other state only a single peak spectrum can be resolved. For astatine and actinium, the main interest is to measure and study the optical isotope shift, which is for the first excitation step for neutron-rich isotopes in the order of IS_FES≈±3.7GHz/u for both elements, as these observables give insight into nuclear moments and shape. In addition, also the isotope shift of the second excitation step for astatine has been measured to IS_SES,At≈-1.7GHz/u. Laser spectroscopy on astatine has mainly been performed on the neutron-deficient isotopes 199,205At due to high count rates and low isobaric contamination. With the results obtained it is possible to extrapolate the required wavelength for ionizing and delivering the isotopes 221-225At which are of interest to e.g. electric dipole moment studies.

Book Shape Transitions in Neutron rich Ru Isotopes

Download or read book Shape Transitions in Neutron rich Ru Isotopes written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spectroscopy of neutron-rich {sup 109,110,111,112}Ru nuclei was studied by measuring the prompt [gamma] rays originated from fission fragments, produced by the 238U([alpha], f) fusion-fission reaction, in coincidence with the detection of both fragments. For {sup 109,111}Ru, both the negative-parity (h112 orbitals) and positive-parity (g--2 and/or d52 orbitals) bands were extended to substantially higher spin and excitation energy than known previously. The ground-state and [gamma]-vibrational bands of {sup 110,112}Ru also were extended to higher spin, allowing observation of the second band crossing at the rotational frequency of H"50 keV in 112Ru, which is H"0 keV above the first band crossing. At a similar rotational frequency, the first band crossing for the h112 band in 111Ru was observed, which is absent in 1°9Ru. These band crossings most likely are caused by the alignment of the g92 proton pair. This early onset of the band crossing for the aligned [pi]g92 orbitals may be evidence of a triaxial shape transition from prolate to oblate occurring in 111Ru. The data together with a comparison of cranked shell model predictions are presented.

Book Laser Spectroscopy of Tin Across N

Download or read book Laser Spectroscopy of Tin Across N written by Liss Vázquez Rodríguez and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis is the study of nuclear structure properties of the neutron-rich Sn isotopes towards the N=82 shell closure and beyond by high-resolution collinear laser spectroscopy. The hyperfine structures and isotope shifts along 108−134Sn were measured using the COLLAPS instrumentation at ISOLDE, CERN. Two independent experiments using transitions with complementary properties, respectively at 452 and 286 nanometres studied the 5p6s 1P1 and the 5p6s 3P1 states in the neutral atom. The singlet state provided high sensitivity to quadrupole moments while the triplet facilitated a large magnetic splitting. From a self-consistent analysis of the two data sets, nuclear spins, electromagnetic moments and charge radii have been extracted. The properties of the long-lived isomers in 113Sn, 123Sn, 128Sn and the ground state of 133Sn and 134Sn have been assessed for the first time. The quadrupole moments of the 11/2− states, determined with much higher precision than in previous studies, have been found to follow a nearly linear trend. A "kink" in the radii trend at N=82 was observed for the first time. Beyond mean-field calculations provide an accurate description of the radii and further relate the overall trend to correlations stemming from the fluctuations of the quadrupole moments.

Book Decay Studies of the Highly Neutron deficient Indium Isotopes

Download or read book Decay Studies of the Highly Neutron deficient Indium Isotopes written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extension of the experimentally known nuclidic mass surface to nuclei far from the region of beta-stability is of fundamental interest in providing a better determination of the input parameters for the various nuclear mass formulae, allowing a more accurate prediction of the ultimate limits of nuclear stability. In addition, a study of the shape of the mass surface in the vicinity of the doubly-closed nuclide 1°°Sn provides initial information on the behavior of the shell closure to be expected when Z = N = 50. Experiments measuring the decay energies of 1°3 1°5In by .beta.-endpoint measurements are described with special attention focused on the development of a plastic scintillator .beta.-telescope coupled to the on-line mass separator RAMA (Recoil Atom Mass Analyzer). An attempt to measure the .beta.-endpoint energy of 1°2In is also briefly described. The experimentally determined decay energies and derived masses for 1°3 1°5In are compared with the predictions of different mass models to identify which models are more successful in this region. Furthermore, the inclusion in these comparisons of the available data on the neutron-rich indium nuclei permits a systematic study of their ground state mass behavior as a function of the neutron number between the shell closures at N = 50 and N = 82. These analyses indicate that the binding energy of 1°3In is 1 MeV larger than predicted by the majority of the mass models. An examination of the Q/sub EC/ surface and the single- and two-neutron separation energies in the vicinity of 1°3 1°5In is also performed to investigate further the deviation and other possible systematic variations in the mass surface in a model-independent way.

Book Isotope Shifts in Atomic Spectra

Download or read book Isotope Shifts in Atomic Spectra written by W.H. King and published by Springer. This book was released on 1984-05-31 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic and nuclear physics are two flourishing but distinct branches of physics; the subject of isotope shifts in atomic spectra is one of the few that links these two branches. It is a subject that has been studied for well over fifty years, but interest in the subject, far from flagging, has been stimulated in recent years. Fast computers have enabled theoreticians to evaluate the properties of many-electron atoms, and laser spectroscopy has made it possible to measure isotope shifts in the previously unmeasurable areas of very rare isotopes, short-lived radioactive isotopes, weak transitions, and transitions involving high-lying atomic levels. Isotope shifts can now be measured with greater accuracy than before in both optical transitions and x-ray transitions of muonic atoms; this improved accuracy is revealing new facets of the subject. I am very grateful to Dr. H. G. Kuhn, F. R. S. , for having introduced me to the subject in the 1950s, and for supervising my efforts to measure isotope shifts in the spectrum of ruthenium. I thus approach the subject as an experimental atomic spectroscopist. This bias is obviously apparent in my use of the spectroscopist's notation of lower-upper for a transition, rather than the nuclear physicist's upper-lower. My reasons are given in Section 1. 3 and I hope that nuclear physicists will forgive me for using this notation even for muonic x-ray transitions.
