Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the French Revolution, as attempts to restore political stability to France repeatedly failed, a group of concerned intellectuals identified a likely culprit: the prevalent sensationalist psychology, and especially the flimsy and fragmented self it produced. They proposed a vast, state-run pedagogical project to replace sensationalism with a new psychology that showcased an indivisible and actively willing self, or moi. As conceived and executed by Victor Cousin, a derivative philosopher but an academic entrepreneur of genius, this long-lived project singled out the male bourgeoisie for training in selfhood. Granting everyone a self in principle, Cousin and his disciples deemed workers and women incapable of the introspective finesse necessary to appropriate that self in practice. Beginning with a fresh consideration of the place of sensationalism in the Old Regime and the French Revolution, Jan Goldstein traces a post-Revolutionary politics of selfhood that reserved the Cousinian moi for the educated elite, outraged Catholics and consigned socially marginal groups to the ministrations of phrenology. Situating the Cousinian moi between the fragmented selves of eighteenth-century sensationalism and twentieth-century Freudianism, Goldstein suggests that the resolutely unitary self of the nineteenth century was only an interlude tailored to the needs of the post-Revolutionary bourgeois order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bourgeois drama of "serious genre" was one of the major innovative literary forms of the French Enlightenment, but it has been largely excluded from the canon today. In a study drawing on contemporary and 18th-century literary theory and philosophy, social history and history of the theatre, Hayes presents a reading of the dramas of Diderot and Sade and argues for a new understanding of the genre as a whole. A disparate group as they were, the "drame's" practitioners share a new approach to personal identity as relational and derived from the workings of the social network - a notion of gr.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Drama of the Revolutionary Years (1990) examines the years following the Revolution which saw an explosion both in the number of theatres and in the number of dramatic representations written and performed. It describes this turbulent period of theatre history, placing it firmly within the context of French social and political life, and illustrating the discussion with examinations of contemporary texts. It focuses on the political and philosophical themes of the plays, and the light they throw on events of the time.
Download or read book Prose Poems of the French Enlightenment written by Fabienne Moore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By examining nearly sixty works, the author traces the prehistory of the French prose poem, demonstrating that the disquiet of some eighteenth-century writers with the Enlightenment gave rise to the genre nearly a century before it is habitually supposed to have existed. In the throes of momentous scientific, philosophical, and socioeconomic changes, Enlightenment authors turned to the past to revive sources such as Homer, the pastoral, Ossian, the Bible, and primitive eloquence, favoring music to construct alternatives to the world of reason. The result, the author argues, were prose poems, including F lon's Les Adventures de T maque, Montesquieu's Le Temple de Gnide, Rousseau's Le L te d'Ephraïm, Chateaubriand's Atala, as well as many lesser-known texts, most of which remain out of print. The author's treatment of Bible criticism and eighteenth-century religious reform movements reveal the often-neglected spiritual side of Enlightenment culture, and tracks its contribution to the period's reflection about language and poetic invention. The author includes in appendices four unusual texts adjudicating the merits of prose poems, making evidence of their controversial nature now accessible to readers.

Download or read book The Royal Dutch Theatre at the Hague 1804 1876 written by Gerd Aage Gillhoff and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Koninklijke Nederduitsche Schouwburg (Royal Dutch Theatre) at The Hague begins in I804. although the theatre did not bear that name until Willem I granted it an annual subsidy a decade later. The present investigation covers the years from I804 to I876 because the company of Royal Dutch Players which was disbanded in the latter year had its origin in the group of actors that gave the opening performance of the new theatre on the K-orte V oorhout in the spring of I804. During the entire seventy-two years there were no important changes of policy at the Royal Dutch Theatre; it was not until I876 that a new period commenced in the theatrical life of the court city and of Holland. Although the Dutch players made frequent appearances in other towns and cities, particularly in Rotterdam and Leiden, the author has limited himself as much as possible to a dis cussion of their activities at The Hague. There is an almost complete absence of newspaper criticism on the Haagsche Schouwburg throughout the first three fourths of the Nineteenth Century, but this lack would be far more serious if the greater part of the period, at least from about I830 to I876, had not been one of theatrical and dramatic poverty . We have enough sources to know that the performances and plays were rarely better than me diocre. The little newspaper criticism available is usually of such an adulatory nature that it can hardly be called helpful.
