Despite a long-standing body of research related to teacher mobility, relatively little is known about how teacher-school pairings affect teachers' decisions to stay at or leave their schools. Therefore, this study tested a model of teacher-school fit with a focus on the value that teachers and principals place on standardized test scores. Survey responses were collected from 382 K-8th grade public school teachers from 22 schools in two school districts. The results show that teachers who placed higher values on standardized test scores reported slightly higher levels of teacher-school fit and were slightly less likely to leave their schools within five years. Additionally, teachers' self-assessed teacher-school fit showed a strong, positive relationship with teacher retention. These findings suggest that a better understanding of the factors that affect teachers' sense of teacher-school fit may help reduce teacher mobility.

Book excerpt: Using matched student-teacher panel data from the state of Florida, the authors study the determinants of teacher job change and the impact of such mobility on the distribution of teacher quality. The probability a teacher stays at a school increases the more productive they are in their current school. The quality of teachers who exit teaching tends to be bimodal; high and low-quality teachers are more likely to leave than those in the middle of the distribution. In contrast, the relationship between teacher productivity and inter-school mobility is relatively weak. In addition to own quality, peer characteristics play a significant role in teachers' job decisions. In particular, teachers who rank above their faculty colleagues are more likely to transfer to a new school within a district and exit teaching. Additionally, as the share of peer teachers with more experience, advanced degrees or professional certification increase, the likelihood of moving within district decreases. We also find evidence of assortative matching among teachers. The most effective teachers who transfer tend to go to schools whose faculties are in the top quartile of teacher quality. As a result, teacher mobility exacerbates differences in teacher quality across schools. (Contains 7 tables, 2 figures and 9 footnotes.).

Book excerpt: Research has consistently shown that teacher quality is distributed very unevenly among schools to the clear disadvantage of minority students and those from low-income families. Using information on teaching spells in North Carolina, the authors examine the potential for using salary differentials to overcome this pattern. They conclude that salary differentials are a far less effective tool for retaining teachers with strong pre-service qualifications than for retaining other teachers in schools with high proportions of minority students. Consequently, large salary differences would be needed to level the playing field when schools are segregated. This conclusion reflects the finding that teachers with stronger qualifications are both more responsive to the racial and socioeconomic mix of a school's students and less responsive to salary than are their less well qualified counterparts when making decisions about remaining in their current school, moving to another school or district, or leaving the teaching profession. Examining the overall mobility frequency of Chinese faculty and its growing rate, the authors predict that after the epidemic, with the growing number of returned overseas talents, there may be a third wave of faculty mobility. They demonstrate that East Asia, the United States and Europe are the main channels for the inward talent mobility to China, and there are significant differences in China’s faculty mobility among different regions, disciplines and genders, which deserves further investigation. Furthermore, they argue the influencing factors of faculty mobility between China and foreign countries are highly different too. Scholars and students of Chinese higher education, international and comparative education may find this book helpful, and benefit from the analysis framework of Push and Pull Theory as long as CV analysis method.
