Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation focuses on sources of, and satisfaction with, sexuality education, relative importance of significant others (e.g., parents, religious leaders) in influencing the acceptance of sexuality information, and characteristics that give significant others authority among adolescents. General and sex-related rapport are also investigated. New instruments to measure the influence of significant others on learning sexuality information, and two rapport scales for religious leaders are reported. Data were collected from 177 college students through a questionnaire. Respondent perceived, actual, and current sources of sexuality education are reported and compared. Sexuality education satisfaction was assessed to determine whether perceived and actual sources of sexuality education influenced level of satisfaction. Repeated measures ANOVA indicated mothers as the most influential significant other in comparison to fathers and religious leaders. Regression analyses based on four types of authority and two types of rapport determined characteristics, which influence adolescent healthy sexual practices and interpersonal relationships.

Book College Students Perceptions of Their Sex Education Experiences

Download or read book College Students Perceptions of Their Sex Education Experiences written by Jasmine L. King and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, I examined the number of university students that reported having received any form of sex education prior to attending college, what types of programs they participated in, and whether they believed their sex education program prepared them for sexual experiences they encountered while at college. Students were asked to rate their knowledge of various topics associated with sexuality and reproductive health. Students were also asked to identify the sources of information and support that have contributed most to their knowledge about sex and sexuality. To understand the extent to which past sex education experiences may be associated with current sex education participation, the study also investigated students' knowledge of and participation in sex education on their college campus. If students were aware of sex education programming on their college campus, they were asked to identify what department or program offered the programming.

Book College Students Perceptions of and Intentions to Engage in Sexually Abstinent Versus Not Abstinent Behaviors

Download or read book College Students Perceptions of and Intentions to Engage in Sexually Abstinent Versus Not Abstinent Behaviors written by and published by . This book was released on 1912 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the following study was to assess college students' perceptions of sexual abstinence and to determine their likelihood of refraining from sexual behaviors in the future. Research conducted by Horan, Hagan, and Phillips (1998) indicates a need to clearly communicate to students what is meant by the term "abstinence," since a significant proportion of young adults appear to consider risky sexual behaviors as "abstinent". In the present study, using an anonymous self-report survey, students enrolled in various psychology courses at North Carolina State University were asked to report their previous sexual behavior, identify those behaviors they believe constituted sexual abstinence, and predict the likelihood that they will abstain from sexual intercourse in a one year period. The results suggest that there is a discrepancy between the CDC's definition of abstinence and college students' interpretation of this practice. This is especially true for behaviors related to oral sex. Implications of the research are provided.

Book Sexual Health and Black College Students

Download or read book Sexual Health and Black College Students written by Naomi M. Hall and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-16 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the various psychosocial, sociocultural, and contextual factors that affect the sexual health of Black students who attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and how this environment can help develop strategies to improve sexual health outcomes for its students. The college environment provides young people with a new sense of independence, self-determination, and peer pressure to engage in risky sexual behaviors, and research has shown that Black students at HBCUs bear a disproportionate burden of poorer sexual health outcomes than students at predominately white institutions (PWIs). Uniquely focusing on the sexual milieu of Black students, Hall-Byers explains why a better understanding of these settings is needed to guide successful interventions that benefit and support the sexual health of Black students. Chapters compare data and research on sexual health outcomes of young Black men and women in comparison to those at predominately white institutions, as well as looking at the role of HBCU campus contexts and cultures, the potential psychosocial and sociocultural influences, what culturally responsive approaches may look like, and recommendations on how HBCU campuses can increase positive sexual health, such as through access, collaborative efforts among administrative offices, and reallocating resources. Sexual Health and Black College Students aims to advance the translation of culturally grounded research into effective practice and is essential reading for researchers and practitioners in sex therapy, public health, and social science as well as for college health staff, including nurses, student affairs, and campus wellness centers.

Book Actual and Perceived Sexual Behaviors in College Students

Download or read book Actual and Perceived Sexual Behaviors in College Students written by Tabitha Flowers and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare college students' actual sexual behaviors and their perceptions of sexual behaviors among their peers. The analyses consisted of 65,036 participant's ages 18 to 24, with a mean age of 20.20 years (SD±1.55) who completed the American College Health Association's National College Health Assessment in 2008. The dependent variables were the normative gap of: Number of Partners, Sexual Activity, and Condom Usage. Three one-way ANOVAs with Bonferroni post hoc analyses were used to determine differences between the dependent variables and the following independent variables: age, sexual orientation, and living arrangement. ANOVAs were used to examine the dependent variables and the following independent variables: sex, race, and fraternity/sorority membership. The largest normative gaps across all three dependent variables were seen in: 18 year olds, female participants, minority participants, and those who were not members of fraternities/sororities. There were differences across the dependent variables in terms of sexual orientation with the largest normative gap on number of partners found among heterosexuals, for sexual activity the largest normative gap found among transgender, and for condom usage, the largest normative gap was found among gay and lesbian students. In terms of living arrangements, students living with parents had the largest normative gap on number of partners and sexual activity and students living in residence halls had the largest normative gap for condom usage. Results from this study suggest that each institution analyze sexual health behavior for their campus specifically in order to create programs appropriate for their student population.

Book Male Privilege Sexual Double Standard and Sexual Scripts

Download or read book Male Privilege Sexual Double Standard and Sexual Scripts written by Mary Ellen Hunt and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately three-fourths of young adults in college hook up at least once by their senior year (i.e., engage in a casual sexual encounter outside the context of a committed relationship). There are important gender differences which may inform how men and women conceptualize hooking up. Men and women may have different predictors of interest, expectations of sex, or attitudes toward sex. These gender differences are likely culturally constructed by the sexual double standard and traditional sexual scripts which project men to be the aggressive sexual initiators who want sex all the time, and women to be passive gatekeepers who desire sex only within an emotional relationship. However, these sexual roles and scripts may not hold true for all men and women. In previous research, men have suggested that their level of interest in a potential partner (short-term verses long-term) is influenced by the amount of "respect" they have for their potential partner. In these preliminary findings, men report being more likely to have long-term interest in women who do not have sex with them on the first few encounters because it fosters respect. Additionally, men report they would not push women that they respect to have sex if they indicated refusal. Women realize this issue of respect and have learned to withhold certain sexual activity if they have long-term interest in the man. These levels of interest may influence how men negotiate sex which, in turn, influences consent cues. Men's ability to interpret consent cues and disregard refusal based on levels of interest is a concept that has not been explored thoroughly in the literature, especially from the perspective of both genders. The current study will examine how levels of interest influence sexual decision-making in casual encounters by examining interview data previously collected in regard to consent negotiation, as well as by collecting additional open-ended narratives from college students to contribute to two separate manuscripts. Based on the gender differences in conceptualizations of hooking up, it is hypothesized that levels of interest will influence sexual decision-making differently by gender.

Book College Students Perceptions of Promiscuity

Download or read book College Students Perceptions of Promiscuity written by Tijana Radojevic and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the potential predictors of the sexual double standard and how atti tudes relate to sexual behaviors. A sample of 138 undergraduates (N = 138; 77% female; 23% male; ages 18-57; Mage. = 24, SD = 6.05) at the University of Central Florida were asked in Fall, 2019 to complete four questionnaires measuring sex-type roles, sexual scripts, and ambiva lent sexist attitudes. Results showed that female participants who had lower ambivalent sexist views reported to having more sexual partners. Male participants were found to endorse sex-type roles and hostile sexism more than female participants, but were not significantly different from each other. Across the sample, participants indicated that seventeen was the ideal amount of life time sexual partners for men and women. Although the presence of the sexual double standard was not detected, findings suggest that traditional attitudes and gendered beliefs may play a role in sexual behaviors.

Download or read book Consent written by Laurie James-Hawkins and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the concept of consent in different contexts with the aim of exploring the nuances of what consent means to different people and in different situations. While it is generally agreed that consent is a fluid concept, legal and social attempts to explain its meaning often centre on overly simplistic, narrow and binary definitions, viewing consent as something that occurs at a specific point in time. This book examines the nuances of consent and how it is enacted and re-enacted in different settings (including online spaces) and across time. Consent is most often connected to the idea of sexual assault and is often viewed as a straight-forward concept and one that can be easily explained. Yet there is confusion among the public, as well as among academics and professionals as to what consent truly is and even the degree to which individuals conceptualise and act on their own ideas about consent within their own lives. Topics covered include: consent in digital and online interactions, consent in education, consent in legal settings and the legal boundaries of consent, and consent in sexual situations including sex under the influence of substances, BDSM, and kinky sex. This book will appeal to students and scholars interested in issues of consent from the social sciences, gender theory, feminist studies, law, psychology, public health, and sexuality studies.

Book Sexual Deviance and Society

Download or read book Sexual Deviance and Society written by Meredith G. F. Worthen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a society where sexualized media has become background noise, we are frequently discouraged from frank and open discussions about sex and offered few tools for understanding sexual behaviors and sexualities that are perceived as being out of the norm. This book encourages readers to establish new ways of thinking about stigmatized people and behaviors and to think critically about gender, sex, sexuality, and sex crimes. Sexual Deviance and Society uses sociological theories of crime, deviance, gender, and sexuality to construct a framework for understanding sexual deviance. This book is divided into four units: Unit I, Sociology of Deviance and Sexuality, lays the foundation for understanding sex and sexuality through sociological frameworks of deviance. Unit II, Sexual Deviance, provides an in-depth dialogue to its readers about the sociological constructions of sexual deviance with a critical focus on contemporary and historical conceptualizations. Unit III, Deviant Sexual Acts, explores a variety of deviant sexual acts in detail, including sex in public, fetishes, and sex work. Unit IV, Sex Crimes and Criminals, examines rape and sexual assault, sex crimes against children, and societal responses to sex offenders and their treatment within the criminal justice system. This revised second edition includes new theoretical approaches such as Norm-Centered Stigma Theory; expands into new fields of criminology such as queer criminology; more deeply discusses nonbinary people’s experiences; includes updates to the landscape of LGBTQ rights; reviews "new" forms of sexual deviance including "incels" and "revenge porn"; covers the latest developments in the #MeToo movement; and expands on the discussion of SM, including the "Fifty Shades Phenomenon." In addition, this edition reviews the ever-evolving world of sex work and camming by examining how Pornhub, OnlyFans, and exotic dancers/strip clubs have revolutionized sex work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing an integrative approach that creates a dialogue between the subjects of gender/sexuality, criminology, and deviance, this book is a key resource for students interested in developing a critical understanding of sex, sexuality, and sex crime.
