Book Applied Latin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Latin: A Course for Beginners After an experience of several years teaching in College and High School, the author has become convinced that the present First Year books do not satisfy modern needs in the teaching of Latin nor do they handle the subject in a manner that produces the greatest good for the greatest number of students. I. The Beginners' books in present use have been written too much for the small number of students who intend to go to College, and too little for the great number who study Latin only during two or three years of High School work. Within the last few years the makers of High _school curricula have been forced to pay more attention to the demands of the great mass of students who go no further than the High School. Courses more nearly related to their needs in later life as citizens and workers have been adopted. Traditional courses which gained reputations as valuable only for College students have been disregarded by the authorities and neglected by the students. Latin, especially, has been attacked as an educational luxury, be cause laymen have thought that the net results of the study do not justify the outlay of so much valuable time. Too often no definite advance could be pointed out as the result of the first year's study even by the teachers. They are, with two exceptions, either adapted from Caesar or taken directly from the easier por tions of his text. The Latin syntax has been presented from the. English point of View. It has not been thought best to assume the pupil's previous knowledge of even the simplest facts of English grammar. The space occupied by this feature of the book is fully offset by the greater ease with which the student will grasp the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Latin Course in English With the present volume we bring to its completion a series of four books, projected for the purpose of making accessible to English readers, in their own tongue, the treasures of Greek and Latin letters, as these treasures are disclosed to the average American student in the ordinary course of school and college education. The preparation of this series of books has happened to coincide in time with vivid public discussion, experiencing its irregularly periodic revival among us, of the question whether after all classical culture ought not to be regarded now as a thing that has had its day. The fact of such discussion, rife anew at just this moment, may well awaken in the present writers mind a somewhat serious consideration. Has he perhaps been doing work for the past rather than for the future.! Is modern interest in ancient classic literature doomed presently to be extinguished. What, as to this point, are the signs of the times? There is no disguising the fact that Greek and Latin are yielding some ground that once was theirs in the schools and the colleges. At Harvard, for example, it has been proposed that Greek shall no longer be made a study indispensable for admission to full standing in the classes. Book Macmillan s Latin Course Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Macmillan s Latin Course Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Alfred Marshall Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Macmillan's Latin Course, Vol. 2 The student of Latin has a threefold task to aecom plish before he can read the Latin writers with any ease. In the first place, he must make himself familiar with the inflections. In the second place, he must acquire a considerable vocabulary. In both these respects Latin presents no serious difficulty; in both it is easier than Greek. The Greek irregular verb, _ with all its variety of forms for prose and poetry, taxes the strongest memory; the Latin irregular verb is easily acquired by any industrious student. With the vocabulary too there is much less labour involved so many of the words wear a familiar aspect. But though the two first steps that have to be made by the student of Latin are not difficult, the third part of the task is by no means easy. The words taken singly are easily mastered, but it is nevertheless true that Latin is a peculiarly difficult language to read, that the relation of the words to one another is not easily detected without considerable practice. The reason of this is, no doubt, that many of the com monest Latin constructions have no counterpart in English. For example, in translating Dixit so valere. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Twentieth Century Latin-Book: For Regents' Schools, High Schools and Academies In submitting The Twentieth Century latin-book to the attention of the public, the aim of the authors has been to edit a work of practical utility, representative of the latest and most approved methods of teaching the first year of Latin. This text book is the outcome of fifteen years of practical experience in teaching Latin. During these fifteen years the authors have prepared nearly three thousand students for the entrance examinations in Latin held by the various Universities - 'columbia, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, New York University, etc., - and for the examinations in Latin held under the auspices of the Regents of the University Of the State of New York. The time intervening between the completion of a course in English Grammar and the beginning of a course in Latin has made it desirable to incorporate in the book a brief summary of the essentials Of English Grammar necessary to the study Of the first year of Latin. This feature of the book will prove to be of value to the student. As a beginner's progress is measured by, the rapidity with which he acquires a sufficiently large vocabulary, and also by the facility with which he is able to analyze sentence-con struction, a large and varied vocabulary has been used through out the book, together with sentences calling for a generous use Of these vocabularies. The vocabularies, as well as the sentences based thereon, have been made to conform as closely as possible to the text of Caesar. For the convenience of the teacher and for the further improve ment Of the-student, many review exercises both on vocabulary and sentence-construction have been inserted. Book A First Latin Book for Junior High Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book A First Latin Book for Junior High Schools Classic Reprint written by Harry Fletcher Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Latin Book for Junior High Schools The development of the Junior High School has brought about a need for certain changes in the organization and methods of presentation of the subject matter of the high school course. Simpler forms of statement, more extended drill, and the elimination or postponement of some topics which have 'been included in the elementary work of the four year high school are necessary in order to meet the needs of younger pupils. Such changes are especially impor tant in the study of foreign languages because of the fact that less time has been given for training in English and for gaining familiarity with the general principles of grammatical usage. In the case of a great many pupils Latin is the first for eign language to be studied. It should, therefore, be made as fully as possible an introduction to the general laws of language. Furthermore it should be presented in such a way as to reenforce the pupil's knowledge of the essential facts regarding the structure and grammatical usages of his own language. Often the inflections of the Latin sentence ele ments serve to make clear syntactical relations which have been vague to the pupil in his study of English and which must be understood by him before an intelligent use of his own language or of a foreign language is possible.
