Book Collections Relating to the History and Inhabitants of the Town of Townshend Vermont Classic Reprint

Download or read book Collections Relating to the History and Inhabitants of the Town of Townshend Vermont Classic Reprint written by James H. Phelps and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections Relating to the History and Inhabitants of the Town of Townshend, Vermont Most of the papers and records copied for the First Part of our Collections were found in the town clerk's office of Townshend. Of these some are given in substance only, others are tabulated, and some are presented without abridgment. To the written testimonies above mentioned, we have added a few statements made to us by aged people whose memory reaches back to within a few years from the towns first settlement. These sources of information, together with certain public records and documents of this County and State, the State of New York, and the United States, are authorities for the facts herein stated. In some of the Family Registers, all members of the family do not appear upon record. A few of these omissions have been supplied, where evidence justified the making of the addition. In all other instances, we present the record as it was written by the recording officer. The number of registers would have been very much increased, had there been a more general compliance with the Statutes relating to the record of marriages, births and deaths. The list of deaths is made of names and dates copied from records both public and private, and from memorial stones in grave-yards. It is the intention of the writer to publish by next Summer a portion, possibly the whole, of the Second Part of his Collections relating to the history of Townshend. Download or read book The History of Middletown Vermont written by Barnes Frisbie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Middletown, Vermont: In Three Discourses, Delivered Before the Citizens of That Town, February 7 and 21, and March 30, 1867 Friends and fellow citizens - You have assembled this evening to hear from me the history of Middletown. I should rejoice if I could assure you that I had a full and complete his tory but I cannot so assure you. I have recently written it out, although I have for twelve years or more intended to do so, and in the meantime have been collecting the materials, as I had Opportunity. I now present it to you, not as a full and complete history, but as the best production I am able to give you. Much of the early history of the town is in oblivion. Fifty years ago, when many of those pioneer fathers and mothers were living, the most of it might have been gathered up and saved; but such as I have been able to collect in my time is hereby most respectfully and affectionately dedicated to and for the use of my native town. I wish here to say, that for the literary merits of my produc tion I claim nothing. My desire, and, I may say, only purposes have been to collect all the material facts I possibly could which go to make up your history, and to express them intelligibly and truthfully, conscious that if those facts can be preserved, they may be put in better form by some one more capable than myself, who shall come after me. Book New Haven

Download or read book New Haven written by Josiah Bushnell Grinnell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Haven: A Rural Historical Town of Vermont The day was auspicious and a large assembly, including well known persons from the towns about, were present in the Congregational Church. The New Haven Brass Band volunteered fine music, and Hon. E. A. Doud, chosen to preside, called on Rev. W. B. Hague, who led in prayer. Judge Doud said on introducing Mr. Grinnell: "By chance a few weeks since I met a prominent lawyer of Chicago, himself a grandson of a chief executive of this State, a gentleman well versed in Vermont matters and in the history of Vermont men. Among other suggestive things he said was this: Not long previous an eastern man said to him: 'Do Vermonters have much influence in Chicago?' I replied, 'More than all the rest of New England. They are everywhere and at the front. The attorney who caught and caged the Anarchists is a Vermonter. A large percentage of the Judges of Chicago are Vermont born and Vermont educated; and so in all departments.'" "And," continued the chairman, "what is true of Vermont in regard to Chicago, I suppose is true of all the great region we dominate 'the West.' And what is true of Vermont in general, is true of New Haven as a part thereof. Many have gone out from here who have left their impress upon those communities where they had lived. Occasionally they come back to us, to view the graves of their ancestors, perchance to renew the friendships of their childhood and see if the place of their birth keeps pace with the world at large. We have such one here to-day, and I take pleasure in introducing to you the Hon. J. B. Grinnell of Grinnell, Iowa, who will now address you."
