Book Free as in Freedom Paperback

Download or read book Free as in Freedom Paperback written by Sam Williams and published by "O'Reilly Media, Inc.". This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free as in Freedom interweaves biographical snapshots of GNU project founder Richard Stallman with the political, social and economic history of the free software movement. It examines Stallman's unique personality and how that personality has been at turns a driving force and a drawback in terms of the movement's overall success. Free as in Freedom examines one man's 20-year attempt to codify and communicate the ethics of 1970s era "hacking" culture in such a way that later generations might easily share and build upon the knowledge of their computing forebears. The book documents Stallman's personal evolution from teenage misfit to prescient adult hacker to political leader and examines how that evolution has shaped the free software movement. Like Alan Greenspan in the financial sector, Richard Stallman has assumed the role of tribal elder within the hacking community, a community that bills itself as anarchic and averse to central leadership or authority. How did this paradox come about? Free as in Freedom provides an answer. It also looks at how the latest twists and turns in the software marketplace have diminished Stallman's leadership role in some areas while augmenting it in others. Finally, Free as in Freedom examines both Stallman and the free software movement from historical viewpoint. Will future generations see Stallman as a genius or crackpot? The answer to that question depends partly on which side of the free software debate the reader currently stands and partly upon the reader's own outlook for the future. 100 years from now, when terms such as "computer," "operating system" and perhaps even "software" itself seem hopelessly quaint, will Richard Stallman's particular vision of freedom still resonate, or will it have taken its place alongside other utopian concepts on the 'ash-heap of history?'

Book Gnu C Library 2 22 Reference Manual 1 2

Download or read book Gnu C Library 2 22 Reference Manual 1 2 written by Sandra Loosemore and published by . This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The GNU C Library, described in this document, defines all of the library functions that are specified by the ISO C standard, as well as additional features specific to POSIX and other derivatives of the Unix operating system, and extensions specific to GNU systems. The purpose of this manual is to tell you how to use the facilities of the GNU C Library. We have mentioned which features belong to which standards to help you identify things that are potentially non-portable to other systems. But the emphasis in this manual is not on strict portability. As the GNU C Library became such a big project over the years, we had to split this reference manual in two parts that are two separate physical books. To keep it consistent with the digital manual, the references and page numbers cover both physical books as it were one. Therefore please note that you probably want to have both parts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algorithms for Automating Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) presents information on the gathering of information and extraction of actionable intelligence from openly available sources, including news broadcasts, public repositories, and more recently, social media. The book is beneficial to both practitioners and academic researchers, with discussions of the latest advances in applications, a coherent set of methods and processes for automating OSINT, and interdisciplinary perspectives on the key problems identified within each discipline. Drawing upon years of practical experience and using numerous examples, editors Robert Layton, Paul Watters, and a distinguished list of contributors discuss Evidence Accumulation Strategies for OSINT, Named Entity Resolution in Social Media, Analyzing Social Media Campaigns for Group Size Estimation, Surveys and qualitative techniques in OSINT, and Geospatial reasoning of open data. - Presents a coherent set of methods and processes for automating OSINT - Focuses on algorithms and applications allowing the practitioner to get up and running quickly - Includes fully developed case studies on the digital underground and predicting crime through OSINT - Discusses the ethical considerations when using publicly available online data

Book The Gold Coins of England

Download or read book The Gold Coins of England written by Robert Lloyd Kenyon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gold Coins of England: Arranged and Described, Being a Sequel to Mr. Hawkins' Silver Coins of England We do not, however, propose to enter upon a description of the British and Roman coins in this volume. They form two series, very distinct from each other, and very distinct also from the coins afterwards struck in England. The British are fully described by Mr. Evans in his Ancient British Coins, and a short account of them, including the gold and copper as well as the silver, is given at the beginning of Hawkins' Silver Coins of England, 2nd edition. Such of the Roman coins as were known in 1844 are included in Akerman's Coins of the Romans relating to Britain.
