Book An Evaluation of Gender Differences on Tests of Auditory Processing

Download or read book An Evaluation of Gender Differences on Tests of Auditory Processing written by Elizabeth M. Daniel and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When listening difficulties emerge despite a normal functioning peripheral auditory system and cognitive abilities, an auditory processing disorder (APD) can be diagnosed. This disorder can be seen in the older and younger populations, but it is more detrimental in children when language is being acquired. In addition, APD can present with other disorders affecting language, learning, and attention. In other developmental disorders, the prevalence of the disorder in males is higher than it is in females. The present study aimed to analyze gender differences on tests of auditory processing (AP). After a peripheral hearing assessment, children were tested in several areas to ensure they were typically developing. These areas included intelligence (Test of Nonverbal Intelligence - version 3, TONI-3), language (Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals Screening Test - version 4, CELF-4), reading (Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing, CTOPP), and attention (Integrated Visual and Auditory Continuous Performance Test, IVA-CPT). An AP test battery including dichotic digits test (DDT), frequency pattern test (FPT), duration pattern test (DPT), random gap detection test (RGDT), compressed and reverberated words (CRW), auditory figure ground +8 signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) (AFG+8), AFG 0 SNR, and listening in spatialized noise sentences test (LiSN-S) were utilized. No gender differences were observed in any of the AP tests. However, age differences were observed in almost every AP test. Further research is needed on a larger sample to help specify local normative data, by age and gender as warranted.

Book Effects of Maturation on a Behavioral Test Battery of Auditory Processing

Download or read book Effects of Maturation on a Behavioral Test Battery of Auditory Processing written by Lisa E. Dau and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data was collected on typically developing, normal hearing children between the ages of 7 and 12 years (n = 28) using a concise yet comprehensive battery of behavioral tests of auditory processing including the FPT, DPT, RGDT, DDT, CRW, and MLD. The extraneous variables of language ability, attention, phonological processing, and intelligence were taken into consideration through the administration of screening measures in these areas. Maturational effects were analyzed using MANOVA to identify differences in performance between the three age groups of children (7-8 year olds; 9-10 year old; 11-12 year olds). A comparison between right and left ear scores did not reveal significant differences between ear scores on any of the monaurally scored AP tests. Because of this, average scores were also used in the data analysis. Statistically significant differences were found on the FPT, DPT, and DDT tests between the age groups with better performance observed for older children compared to younger children. Auditory processing performance was not significantly different between male and female participants. Additionally, a regression analysis revealed that auditory processing test performance was not a significant predictor of non-verbal IQ score. In order to comprehensively evaluate auditory processing abilities in children, audiologists should select tests that assess a wide array of underlying auditory skills such as sound localization and lateralization, auditory discrimination, dichotic listening, auditory pattern recognition, temporal processing, and performance with competing or degraded acoustic signals (AAA, 2010; ASHA, 1996; 2005a). With the exception of the 500 Hz MLD test, the comprehensive auditory processing test battery used in this study has clinical utility for children 7 to 12 years of age. A lack of statistically significant maturational effects on some of the tests in the battery may be attributed to the small sample size used in this study. The collection of additional participant data using the same methodology as the current study will assist in creating local normative data and a comprehensive auditory processing test battery for the Maryland area.

Book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8

Download or read book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Book Evaluation of Test Outcome Equivalency of Different Test Versions in Assessing for Auditory Processing Disorder

Download or read book Evaluation of Test Outcome Equivalency of Different Test Versions in Assessing for Auditory Processing Disorder written by Molly Day and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment of auditory processing disorder (APD) is complicated by many factors. One of these factors is the availability of numerous tests and test versions that are use clinically, in the absence of a standardized test battery. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine if three different versions of the DD test (Auditec, Audiology Illustrated, and VA) and three different versions of the FP test (Auditec, Audiology Illustrated, and VA), resulted in the same or different performance in older adults, in order to help lessen the ambiguity of APD assessment. The methods of this study included administering the DD and FP test versions, according to published guidelines, to older adults and comparing their scores to published normative data. The data was analyzed using a repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) for each DD test version and each FP test version, in order to compare the mean test scores for each version. The results of this study indicated significant differences across the FP and DD test versions. The VA FP test version and Audiology Illustrated or Auditec DD test versions were recommended for clinical use.

Book Corelations Between the SCAN C Test for Auditory Processing Disorders in Children revised and the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals Third Edition Language Assessment Tool

Download or read book Corelations Between the SCAN C Test for Auditory Processing Disorders in Children revised and the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals Third Edition Language Assessment Tool written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective: The purpose of this paper is to determine the relationship between the SCAN-C Test for Auditory Processing Disorders In Children-Revised (SCAN-C) and the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals, Third Edition (CELF-3) language assessment tool in a group of children suspected of auditory processing problems. Study Design: A retrospective chart review was conducted to compare the standard scores of the SCAN-C and the CELF-3 of 30 children referred for a multidisciplinary evaluation. Methods: All children were administered the SCAN-C and the CELF-3. Results: Significant differences were identified between the SCAN-C composite standard score and the total receptive language standard score as well as the total expressive language standard score of the CELF-3. A more in depth analysis revealed significant correlations between a number of the SCAN-C subtests and the CELF-3 subtests. Discussion: The findings imply that these two test approaches quantify different aspects of processing abilities in children.
