Although he contributed to a number of mathematical fields, Brauer devoted the major share of his efforts to the study of finite groups, a subject of considerable abstract interest and one that underlies many of the more recent advances in combinatorics and finite geometries.The 120 papers collected in this volume were first published between 1926 and 1979. Brauer's mathematical impulse was remarkably steady, and his papers are equally distributed between those written before his fiftieth year and those written thereafter, including a number of contributions that were published after his formal retirement as Perkins Professor of Mathematics as Harvard in 1971.The papers are grouped into six sections following an autobiographical preface written for this collection. The first section contains twenty papers on the theory of algebras and is introduced by Oscar Goldman. The seventy-four papers on finite groups make up the second and largest section, which spans all three volumes. The final four sections complete the third volume and represent Brauer's contribution to Lie groups, number theory, polynomials and equations, geometries and biographies of Artin and Thompson.

The present volume and its successor have therefore the more modest aim of giving descriptions of the recent development of certain important parts of the subject, and even in these parts no attempt at completeness has been made. Chapter VII deals with the representation theory of finite groups in arbitrary fields with particular attention to those of non-zero charac teristic. That part of modular representation theory which is essentially the block theory of complex characters has not been included, as there are already monographs on this subject and others will shortly appear. Instead, we have restricted ourselves to such results as can be obtained by purely module-theoretical means.

Book excerpt: Kuo-Tsai Chen (1923-1987) is best known to the mathematics community for his work on iterated integrals and power series connections in conjunction with his research on the cohomology of loop spaces. His work is intimately related to the theory of minimal models as developed by Dennis Sullivan, whose own work was in part inspired by the research of Chen. An outstanding and original mathematician, Chen's work falls naturally into three periods: his early work on group theory and links in the three sphere; his subsequent work on formal differential equations, which gradually developed into his most powerful and important work; and his work on iterated integrals and homotopy theory, which occupied him for the last twenty years of his life. The goal of Chen's iterated integrals program, which is a de Rham theory for path spaces, was to study the interaction of topology and analysis through path integration. The present volume is a comprehensive collection of Chen's mathematical publications preceded by an article, "The Life and Work of Kuo-Tsai Chen," placing his work and research interests into their proper context and demonstrating the power and scope of his influence.
