Book excerpt: I am exploring how artists, as individuals, collaboratives and organizations are able to work effectively in communities and facilitate dialogue around issues of social justice. I am interested in artist projects that use conversation as a catalyst that allows communities to explore, question, and propose collaborative solutions that can potentially create sustained interventions in communities. It is my theory that through dialogue, artists are able to decrease hierarchy and increase collaboration with participants. As the executive director, and curator of and organization that is a platform for this type of work, I am looking at this process from the deeply imbedded perspective of a practitioner. I am close to all of the case studies that I am presenting. They all use methods of collaborative dialogue to facilitate exploration and intervention with in communities. Sustained interventions that continue beyond the work of an artist are dependent on collaboration with the larger structures of a community. I am particularly interested projects that allow for sustained impact after the artist leaves through cross sector collaborations between artists, community members, and organizations. This thesis hopes to lay out a theoretical groundwork tied to case studies, that will lead to a more tangible "field manual" that examines pragmatic models and structures that artists can utilize to produce projects that have a sustained impact on communities.
