The great flowering of his poetry happened all, in the single year from the summer of 1797 when he first became friends with Dorothy and William Wordsworth. That was the year in which he wrote The Ancient Mariner, the first part of Christable, Kubla Khan and other poems that were, as Kathleen Raine writes, "the works not of his talent but of his genius".As well as Coleridge's finest poems, this Penguin edition contains selections from his letters and his main critical writings, including extracts from Biographia Literaria and several of his revolutionary essays on Shakespeare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronically impoverished, tormented by self-doubt and a crippling addiction to opium, Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) still managed to become one of the most versatile and influential forces of English romanticism. The Portable Coleridge faithfully represents all facets of this complex, haunted genius, including his poems, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," "Christabel," "Kubla Khan," and "Dejection"; letters to friends and colleagues such as Robert Southey and William Godwin; selections from Notebooks and Table Talk; political and philisophical writings; literary criticism; and extensive excerpts from Biographia Literaria, in which Coleridge interweaves aesthetics, metaphysics, and disarmingly candid autobiography. Edited and with an introduction by the critic I.A. Richards, this voulme vastly expands our understanding of a writer of visionary insight and protean range.

Book Towards a Romantic Conception of Nature

Download or read book Towards a Romantic Conception of Nature written by Hendrik Roelof Rookmaaker and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study describes in detail the development of Coleridge's attitude to nature as it is reflected in his poetry. It analyses the different stages of Coleridge's search for a meaningful relation to nature from an uncritical adoption of the eighteenth century conventions in his early poetry to a projectionist view in his poems of 1802. It offers challenging new readings of some of Coleridge's major poems like 'The Ancient Mariner' and 'Dejection: an Ode', and tries to rehabilitate some minor ones, like 'The Picture'. Attention is also paid to his relation with Wordsworth. It discusses in detail the philosophical background of Coleridge's views and considers the contribution of German thought to his development. As a whole this study affords a new insight into the genesis of romanticism in England.
