Download or read book Method and Imagination in Coleridge s Criticism written by J.R. de J. Jackson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-17 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1969, this book places Coleridge’s literary criticism against the background of his philosophical thinking, examining his theories about criticism and the nature of poetry. Particular attention is paid to the structure of Biographia Literaria, Coleridge’s distinction between Imagination and Fancy, his definitions of the poetic characters of Shakespeare and Wordsworth, his analysis of the mental state of audiences in theatres, and his interpretations of Paradise Lost, Hamlet and Aeschylus’ Prometheus. The emphasis throughout is on how Coleridge thought rather than what he thought and the process rather than the conclusions of his criticism.

Download or read book Shapes of Imagination written by George Stiny and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual calculating in shape grammars aligns with art and design, bridging the gap between seeing (Coleridge's “imagination”) and combinatoric play (Coleridge's “fancy”). In Shapes of Imagination, George Stiny runs visual calculating in shape grammars through art and design—incorporating Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poetic imagination and Oscar Wilde's corollary to see things as they aren't. Many assume that calculating limits art and design to suit computers, but shape grammars rely on seeing to prove otherwise. Rules that change what they see extend calculating to overtake what computers can do, in logic and with data and learning. Shape grammars bridge the divide between seeing (Coleridge's “imagination, or esemplastic power”) and combinatoric play (Coleridge's “fancy”). Stiny shows that calculating without seeing excludes art and design. Seeing is key for calculating to augment creative activity with aesthetic insight and value. Shape grammars go by appearances, in a full-fledged aesthetic enterprise for the inconstant eye; they answer the question of what calculating would be like if Turing and von Neumann were artists instead of logicians. Art and design are calculating in all their splendid detail.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject English - Literature, Works, University of North Bengal (University of North Bengal), course: Masters, language: English, abstract: “The theory of imagination”, as Masao Okamoto observes, “which was coming to have a very important role in the literary criticism in England, came to maturity towards the end of the eighteenth century, and was consummated in the criticism of S.T. Coleridge.” Under the influence of his father, John Coleridge who was well-versed in Greek, Latin and Hebrew, Samuel read many books from his childhood and in his early teens he was called by Lamb, a “logician, metaphysician, Bard!” According to Lamb, Coleridge was heard reading such books as Iamblicus and Plotinus out loud in the corridor of Christ Hospital.

Book The Public Image

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Hariman
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2016-11-07
  • ISBN : 022634293X
  • Pages : 357 pages

Download or read book The Public Image written by Robert Hariman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Hariman and Lucaites provide an account of how photojournalism creates a distinctive and valuable way of understanding the modern world, plus example of how the public spectator can think about and with photographs in order to develop that understanding. Coming off the banner success of their No Caption Needed (2007), The Public Image takes that book forward with the express purpose of promoting visual literacy as a civic skill. In the end they aim to enlarge the conceptual scope of photography as a mode of experience, a medium for social thought, and a public art. Public thought needs both good writing and good photography, and this indicates the contemporary shift in talk about photography from what photographs are to a more direct concern with what photographs do. The authors take up a series of Big Issues, such as the recorded image as real and as artifice, the tangle of photography with modernity (here they touch on digitization and globalization), the manner in which the photograph operates as a medium for social thought, the photograph s intimate relationship with warfare, and they conclude with a chapter on the supersaturation of the image world (abundance is an important theme, and characteristic sign of cultural vitality)."

Book Coleridge and the Conservative Imagination

Download or read book Coleridge and the Conservative Imagination written by Alan P. R. Gregory and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why should anyone bother with Coleridge either as a theologian or a political theorist? At first in desperation, but now quite deliberately, Alan Gregory convincingly suggests that one should bother because Coleridge mounted an imporant critique of reductionist explanations of human society and moral agency, and because Coleridge has much regarding that important enterprise to teach us still. While Gregory also offers a perceptive outline of early British conservatism, his main concern is with Coleridge's attack on reductionism, including his defense of the will against associationism, his criticisms of Enlightenment historiography, his discussions of the inadequacies of political economy, and the Trinitarian arguments against monism. There is, Gregory remarks, no grasping the range or inner dynamic of Coleridge's thought without appreciating his religious vision, his theology. Indeed, Coleridge himself affirmed that should we try to conceive a man without the ideas of God, eternity, freedom, will, absolute truth, of the good, the true, the beautiful, the infinite...the man will have vanished.

Book excerpt: This carefully edited collection has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834) was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets. He wrote the poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, as well as the major prose work Biographia Literaria. His critical work, especially on Shakespeare, was highly influential, and he helped introduce German idealist philosophy to English-speaking culture. He coined many familiar words and phrases, including suspension of disbelief. He was a major influence on Emerson, and American transcendentalism. Coleridge is one of the most important figures in English poetry. His poems directly and deeply influenced all the major poets of the age. He was known by his contemporaries as a meticulous craftsman who was more rigorous in his careful reworking of his poems than any other poet, and Southey and Wordsworth were dependent on his professional advice.
