Book Evolutionary Theory and Processes Modern Horizons

Download or read book Evolutionary Theory and Processes Modern Horizons written by Eviatar Nevo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-01-31 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolution is the most profound of human ideas integrating all natural phenomena: cosmic, biological, and cultural into a continuous universal change. This volume deals with evolutionary observations, experiments, and theories contributing to a deeper understanding of the evolutionary process, th honoring the 75 birthday of Eviatar (Eibi) Nevo. I first met Eibi in 1966 when he was a Fellow in the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University and working mostly on cricket frog vocalization and speciation in the United States. His unique discovery of pipid fossil frogs in the Israeli Early Cretaceous, central Negev, is possibly the largest world collection of ancient fossil frogs. Our acquaintance developed into mutual friendship and admiration. Since then our long-lasting friendship has included a visit to Israel, enabling me to follow Eibi's major scientific achievements, in particular, his founding of the Institute of Evolution in the University of Haifa and now the pending establishment of the International Graduate School of Evolution. The research program of Eibi Nevo, in collaboration with numerous colleagues and students in Israel and across the world, encompasses diverse perspectives of evolutionary biology and biodiversity of genes, populations, species, and ecosystems integrating modem and classical evolutionary approaches, molecular and organismal. They deal with model organisms in all forms from bacteria through plants, fungi, animals, and humans conducted over local, regional, and global scales.

Book Coleoptera Staphylinidae Scaphidiinae

Download or read book Coleoptera Staphylinidae Scaphidiinae written by Ivan Löbl and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present Catalogue comprises information on 48 genera and 1802 valid species of the coleopterous subfamily Scaphidiinae. Unlike previous catalogues of the group, it gives exact type localities, depositories and sexes of primary types whenever traceable. Genera are listed with their type species and grammatical gender. References are given to subsequent taxonomic and nomenclatural acts, records, and to all other relevant information. Distributional information is provided per country, for larger or insular countries per subunits. An overview of fungus and slime mould hosts is annexed. The references to all taxa have been checked by the author. Infrasubspecific entities and priorities are dealt to comply with the ICZN. Nomenclatural problems are highlighted, and several new records are given. Extinct taxa are listed separately.

Book A Handbook of Tropical Soil Biology

Download or read book A Handbook of Tropical Soil Biology written by Fatima M. S. Moreira and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical handbook describes sampling and laboratory assessment methods for the biodiversity of a number of key functional groups of soil organisms, including insects, earthworms, nematodes, fungi and bacteria. The methods have been assembled and the protocols drafted by a number of scientists associated with the UNEP-GEF funded Conservation and Sustainable Management of Below-Ground Biodiversity Project, executed by the Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility (TSBF) Institute of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). The methods provide a standardized basis for characterizing soil biodiversity and current land uses in terrestrial natural, semi-natural and agroecosystems in tropical forests and at forest margins. The aim is to assess soil biodiversity against current and historic land use practices both at plot and landscape scales and, further, to identify opportunities for improved sustainable land management through the introduction, management or remediation of soil biota, thus reducing the need for external inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides. The book also contains extensive advice on the handling of specimens and the allocation of organisms to strain or functional group type. Published with TSBF-CIAT, CTA, UNEP and GEF

Book The Genus Carabus in Europe

Download or read book The Genus Carabus in Europe written by Hans Turin and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ground beetle genus Carabus (Coleoptera, Carabidae) is one of the most intensively studied groups of insects. For more than 200 years a huge amount of data has been accumulated on taxonomy, biology, phylogeny, ecology and biogeography. From the start in 1989, the aim of the project was to present a complete European summary, combining data from both Western and Eastern Europe. The results are presented to the scientific community in the form of a thorough and attractive book, which will be indispensable in the field of entomology, ecology and biogeography.
