Book Friendship in Medieval Iberia

Download or read book Friendship in Medieval Iberia written by Antonella Liuzzo Scorpo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private and public relationships - frequently labelled as friendships - have always played a crucial role in human societies. Yet, over the centuries ideas and meanings of friendship transformed, adapting to the political and social climates of different periods. Changing concepts and practices of friendship characterized the intellectual, social, political and cultural panorama of medieval Europe, including that of thiteenth-century Iberia. Subject of conquests and 'Reconquest', land of convivencia, but also of political instability, as well as of secular and religious international power-struggles: the articulation of friendship within its borders is a particularly fraught subject to study. Drawing on some of the encyclopaedic vernacular masterpieces produced in the scriptorium of 'The Wise' King, Alfonso X of Castile (1252-84), this study explores the political, religious and social networks, inter-faith and gender relationships, legal definitions, as well as bonds of tutorship and companionship, which were frequently defined through the vocabulary and rhetoric of friendship. This study demonstares how the values and meanings of amicitia, often associated with classical, Roman, Visigothic and Eastern traditions, were transformed to adapt to Alfonso X’s cultural projects and political propaganda. This book contributes to the study of the history of emotions and cultural histories of the Middle Ages, while also emphasizing how Iberia was a peripheral, but still vital, ring in a chiain which linked it to the rest of Europe, while also occupying a central role in the historical and cultural developments of the Western Mediterranean.

Book Alfonso X and the Cantigas de Santa Maria

Download or read book Alfonso X and the Cantigas de Santa Maria written by Joseph O'Callaghan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-20 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Cantigas de Santa Maria, a collection of more than four hundred poems written in the language of medieval Galicia in praise of the Virgin Mary, Alfonso X, el Sabio, king of Castile-Leon, has left us a kind of poetic biography. Declaring himself Mary's troubadour, he appeals to her as his advocate and consoler as he recounts specific events in his life and that of his kingdom. As he tells us about his family, his war against the Muslims of Granada and Morocco, the treachery of the nobility, his frequent illnesses, and his fear of hellfire and damnation, he reveals much about his personality and his spirituality. This volume explicates the historical circumstances surrounding the events described in the cantigas. The Cantigas de Santa Maria is a royal biography unique in thirteenth-century Europe.

Book The Gospel of Mark in Context

Download or read book The Gospel of Mark in Context written by Santiago Guijarro and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-04-14 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The short story that we now know as the Gospel according to Mark was written in Greek twenty centuries ago in the context of an agrarian society that had been developing its own characteristics in the circum-Mediterranean region. Mark's account presupposes the values, institutions, and relationships of the culture in which Jesus and his first followers lived. Modern readers of the Gospels, however, especially those born and raised in the North Atlantic postindustrial societies, have other values and institutions, and relate to each other according to other cultural codes. This temporal and cultural distance between the ancient texts and their present-day readers makes necessary an exegetical effort whose purpose is to recover, as far as possible, the reading scenarios presupposed by these texts. In order to reconstruct these scenarios, exegesis has turned in recent years to the social sciences, whose models permit us to imagine and describe the situations presupposed by these ancient texts. This book aims to show how the use of these scenarios elaborated with the help of the social sciences can contribute to a more considered and respectful reading of Mark's story.

Book Disaster in the Early Modern World

Download or read book Disaster in the Early Modern World written by Ovanes Akopyan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did early modern societies think about disasters, such as earthquakes or floods? How did they represent disaster, and how did they intervene to mitigate its destructive effects? This collection showcases the breadth of new work on the period ca. 1300-1750. Covering topics that range from new thinking about risk and securitisation to the protection of dikes from shipworm, and with a geography that extends from Europe to Spanish America, the volume places early modern disaster studies squarely at the intersection of intellectual, cultural and socio-economic history. This period witnessed fresh speculation on nature, the diffusion of disaster narratives and imagery and unprecedented attempts to control the physical world. The book will be essential to specialists and students of environmental history and disaster, as well as general readers who seek to discover how pre-industrial societies addressed some of the same foundational issues we grapple with today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spiritual Encounters is a comparative and theoretically informed look at the religious interactions between Native and colonial European cultures throughout the Americas. Religion was one of the most contentious, dramatic, and complex arenas of confrontation between Natives and Europeans during the colonial era. This volume fully explores the significance of colonial religious encounters. Case studies, organized by theme, showcase previously unexamined sources and offer interpretations that shed new light on Native-European religious encounters in the New World. One group of studies examines the extent to which Native peoples internalized Christianity and the cultural mechanisms that enabled them to do so. Other chapters assess in detail the often uneasy relationship between Christianity and coexisting indigenous religious practices involving sorcery and healing. A third set of essays looks at the broader political and economic forces underlying Native-colonial religious encounters. An introduction and epilogue by the editors provide valuable summaries of the broad patterns characterizing the religious interactions between the West and the Other in the colonial Americas.

Book Marian Representations in the Miracle Tales of Thirteenth century Spain and France

Download or read book Marian Representations in the Miracle Tales of Thirteenth century Spain and France written by David A. Flory and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Marian miracle tale of thirteenth-century Spain and France is an unusual thematic genre comprising tales, songs, poems, plays, and sermons dedicated to miraculous occurrences attributed to the Virgin Mary. While there are scholarly articles on particular aspects of this large and important body of literature, there has been no attempt to bring its principal authors together into a single scholarly study. Bringing five well-known thirteenth-century authors together -- Gonzalo de Berceo, Gautier de Coinci, Cardinal Jacques de Vitry, Rutebeuf, and King Alfonso X of Spain -- the book shows how each used the Marian collections for individual purposes. Mary is portrayed in a variety of manifestations, as Mediatrix, Monitrix, Maler Dei, National Patroness, and even as something close to the troubadour's desired or unattainable Lady. Berceo was a secular priest who found an older collection of tales useful as an instructive tool. Gautier, an aristocratic monk of intellectual refinement, had a nearly exclusively artistic interest in his Marian materials, while Cardinal Jacques de Vitry -- an eminent churchman and eloquent reformer -- sought with his carefully chosen tales to bring Marianism into the fold of doctrinal orthodoxy. Rutebeuf, a minstrel, accepted the tales as popular piety and returned them to his audience in a spirit of reproach to the sometimes heavy-handed didactic use made of the material by churchmen with vested interests. Finally, the personal voice and directing presence of Spain's King Alfonso X makes of his famous Marian collection, the Cantigas de Santa Maria, a part of his social and religious program for Spain. Additionally, a reflection upon the formalistcriticism of Bakhtin and Todorov suggests new possibilities for seeing within some Marian tales of the period a subtle tool for the subverting of perceived Church excesses.
