Book The Yehud Coinage

Download or read book The Yehud Coinage written by Jean-Philippe Fontanille and published by Israel Numismatic Society. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a die study of the provincial silver coinage of Judah in the late Persian, Macedonian, and early Hellenistic periods. It offers correct descriptions of the coins, their designs, and their inscriptions; enumerates the obverse and reverse dies identified for each of the 44 recorded types; and explains the probable sequence of the issues as deduced from iconographic associations and die links. The iconography of the coin types is examined in depth, with comparisons to motifs in Greek, Persian, and ancient Near Eastern art, including other local coinages and sources in Judahite material culture. The monograph also analyzes data relating to the metrology, metal content, and circulation of the coinage. Overall, the study attempts to place the Yehud coinage in its historical context and to define its role in the economy of the ancient province of Judah.

Book excerpt: What is spirituality? In The Power Zone, author Tony Simpson answers this question and more by introducing and defining The Power Zone. The result is clarification of the protective, empowering realm in which God wants us to live. The Power Zone explains that at the moment of salvation God places us into two different relationships with Him, one of which takes place in The Power Zone. The Power Zone is the only place where the Holy Spirit directs our life. Inside of this exclusive sphere we enjoy spiritual empowerment, fellowship, spiritual growth, production, and effective prayer. Each time we succumb to sin, we leave The Power Zone, and become prey to the three enemies of freedom: the world, the flesh, and the devil. Using a creative array of teaching diagrams, Simpson includes a five-level spiritual growth model to help us understand our current spirituality and where we need to grow. The Power Zone enables us to exploit God's grace provisions for living the Spirit-directed life.

Book Money Matters

Download or read book Money Matters written by Richard T. Gray and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Money Matters, Richard Gray investigates the discourses of aesthetics and philosophy alongside economic thought, arguing that their domains are not mutually exclusive. The transition in Germany from an agrarian or proto-industrial economy to a capitalist industrial economy, which was paralleled by a shift from the exchange of money in coin to the use of paper currencies, occurred simultaneously with an efflorescence of German-language literature and philosophy. Based on close readings of canonical literary and philosophical texts, Gray explores how this confluence led to a rich cross-fertilization between economic and literary thought in Germany during this period. Money Matters documents the surprising degree to which literature and philosophy participated in the creation of modern economic paradigms, as well as the extent to which economics influenced literature and philosophy. The cultural artifacts of the period demonstrate the existence of an “economic unconsciousness”: persistent notions of value and exchange that inflect the aesthetic and thematic dimensions of literary and philosophical texts. This book offers a thought-provoking and original analysis of literature and ideas in the critical transition period from Kant and Goethe, through the German Romantics, to Marx.

Book The Essence Of Chaos

  • Author : Flavio Lorenzelli
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2003-09-02
  • ISBN : 0203214587

Download or read book The Essence Of Chaos written by Flavio Lorenzelli and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of chaotic systems has become a major scientific pursuit in recent years, shedding light on the apparently random behaviour observed in fields as diverse as climatology and mechanics. InThe Essence of Chaos Edward Lorenz, one of the founding fathers of Chaos and the originator of its seminal concept of the Butterfly Effect, presents his own landscape of our current understanding of the field. Lorenz presents everyday examples of chaotic behaviour, such as the toss of a coin, the pinball's path, the fall of a leaf, and explains in elementary mathematical strms how their essentially chaotic nature can be understood. His principal example involved the construction of a model of a board sliding down a ski slope. Through this model Lorenz illustrates chaotic phenomena and the related concepts of bifurcation and strange attractors. He also provides the context in which chaos can be related to the similarly emergent fields of nonlinearity, complexity and fractals. As an early pioneer of chaos, Lorenz also provides his own story of the human endeavour in developing this new field. He describes his initial encounters with chaos through his study of climate and introduces many of the personalities who contributed early breakthroughs. His seminal paper, "Does the Flap of a Butterfly's Wing in Brazil Set Off a Tornado in Texas?" is published for the first time.

Book excerpt: February 1574. Winter holds London in its icy grasp, but the city is also caught in a fervour of paranoia, superstition and rumour. Mob violence is commonplace. A whispered word is all it takes to condemn a woman to burn as a witch. Following his success in foiling the 'Incendium' plot against the queen, Dr Christopher Radcliff's standing within court is high. However, he has no time to reap any rewards. Counterfeit coins are circulating on London's streets, bearing the likeness of his master, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. This in itself is a treasonous offence, but slogans have also begun to appear. Daubed on walls and doorways, they suggest that someone close to the queen harbours treacherous intent - none other than Leicester himself . . . So Radcliff and his team of informants and amateur spies are sent out into the city's markets, drinking dens and brothels to track down who might be behind such outrageous and subversive acts. The investigation will lead them down a murderous path to face an elusive foe with an extraordinary agenda. And time is running out: for when rumour and fear catch fire, then surely violent insurrection and bloody chaos will follow.
