Book excerpt: To date, little research has been conducted to the effects of epilepsy on cognitive and language issues. This study is a response to this knowledge gap. A careful matched-subject, mixed-factors description, designed to identify cognitive decline during the process and treatment of this illness. The research is focused on description and exploration, of linguistic considerations in Rolandic epilepsy. Rolandic epilepsy, is also known as Benign focal epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECS). The intention is to shed light from a neurolinguistic perspective, on reasons that might underline cognitive and behavioral complications, in children with epilepsy. This study has been approached corroborating ‘structural connectivity’, which defines language network in the brain. The rational derives from research of neurological data, from prestigious neurological and scientific international journals, on the topic that illustrates our case. Conclusions are based upon careful evaluation on how epilepsy affects cognitive skills, and language issues upon observations drawn on results. Deficits in language patterns have been associated to different brain areas, in patients who suffer from different pathologies. Degenerative illnesses have opened a milestone in the study on reasons leading to cognitive decline, in children affected from “Benign childhood epilepsy”. Medical history has been well documented to current day. Lack of consistent information internationally recognized on cognitive issues toughen consensus on best medical procedure to follow, in best interest of the child. Our research confronted this shortage of information, in the light of the new literature coming through. Overall, the results indicate that when working with language skills in people with epilepsy or with degenerative diseases, clinicians should account for the presence of anti-epileptic medication or amalgamation of medications as possible cause of cognitive decline.

Book Neuropsychology of Childhood Epilepsy

Download or read book Neuropsychology of Childhood Epilepsy written by Isabelle Jambaqué and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the neuropsychological description of childhood epilepsy, a neurolo- cal condition that constitutes one of the most prevalent forms of chronic and disabling childhood illnesses. Indeed, one child out of 20 experiences one or more seizures before the age of 5, and one in a hundred develops epilepsy as a chronic disorder. Approximately half of these children with epilepsy display academic difficulties and/or behavioral disorders. Moreoever, it is now believed that a sizable proportion of children with learning disability suffer from undiagnosed epilepsy. While a great number of textbooks have been devoted to various medical aspects of chi- hood epilepsy (diagnosis, genetics, etiology, drug and surgical treatment, etc.), there have been no comprehensive accounts of the cognitive consequences of this condition. Advance of medical knowledge has shown that childhood epilepsy should not be considered as a single disorder but encompasses a whole range of different conditions that exhibit specific clinical EEG and outcome characteristics. It is not becoming apparent that these various clinical entities have different cognitive expression that yet need to be specified. The purpose of this book is to provide a complete up-to-date analysis of this multi-faceted pathology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than half the numbers of children with epilepsy have interrelated language, learning and/or behavior complications. By adulthood, these problems can interfere with socialization and employment. The seizures may be controlled but the developmental distortions can continue to present problems for health and education systems and carers. In this comprehensive and fully referenced book, William Svoboda distils a lifetime of clinical experience with childhood epilepsy into three areas which address each of the main areas of difficulty. In each he looks at why the problems arise and assesses diagnostic and remediative approaches. The focus is on the whole care of the child rather than on diagnosis, classification and medication alone. Clinicians, mental health practitioners, educators and speech–language pathologists will find this book invaluable.

Book Neuropsychology in the Care of People with Epilepsy

Download or read book Neuropsychology in the Care of People with Epilepsy written by Christoph Helmstaedter, Bruce Hermann, Maryse Lassonde, Philippe Kahane, Alexis Arzimanoglou and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having appeared in the 1930s in Montreal, standardised neuropsychological evaluation has become an essential tool in the clinical diagnosis and evaluation of surgical epileptic patients. Nevertheless, despite great progress over the last 20 to 30 years in the diagnosis and medical treatment of epilepsy, clinical neuropsychology still remains largely associated with surgical epilepsy, particularly surgery of the temporal lobe. Clinical neurology has still not managed to clear a way in the daily practice with patients with all types of epilepsy despite significant advances in cognitive neuroscience and a large number of clinical studies on epilepsy and cognition. How is it that there are only rarely major advances in the field of clinical neuropsychology? It has long been time for this question to be asked, and for an attempt to be made to bring about changes. This was the aim of the Toronto workshop and the result of this book. Every approach was debated, providing important elements to reflect on and allowing a great forum for exchanges. This book includes the communications from the main participants and comments from some others on specific subjects.

Book Do Seizures Damage the Brain

Download or read book Do Seizures Damage the Brain written by Thomas Sutula and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 2002 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the consequences, if any, of repeated brief seizures that are the defining feature of epilepsy? A firm answer to this question has been surprisingly elusive for a variety of reasons. Clearly there is a subset of patients who appear to tolerate seizures with relatively limited long-term consequences, and not all patients are destined to progress to intractability with frequent seizures and disability. This variability and individual susceptibility has made it difficult to make statements that fairly apply to the full range of people with epileptic disorders, whose disorders span a broad spectrum from mild with excellent control and few limitations, to severe with multiple daily seizures and pronounced disability that affects employment, educational performance, an personal life. This volume seeks to explore the spectrum of severe to more subtle damage that may be a consequence of seizures. The contributing authors have addressed these questions and related issues using a variety of methods in experimental models and in patients with epilepsy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder of childhood, occurring both in children whose physical and cognitive states are otherwise normal as well as being a facet of a more generalised and severe brain disease. There are many manifestations of epilepsy and, therefore, a diversity of factors in underlying pathology, responses to treatment and prognosis. Full understanding requires knowledge of the basic science that underlies epilepsy and its causes, and an appreciation of cognitive, psychiatric and social factors. This book is a comprehensive and up-to-date review of all aspects of childhood epilepsy for the specialist neurologist or paediatrician with an interest in this area. The first edition was praised for its valuable clinical approach to examining the nature of epileptic syndromes and for its appropriate and readable coverage of the underlying basic science, features that are retained and expanded upon in this revision. Particular updates include full coverage of new developments in epidemiology, genetics, classification, imaging, drug therapy and other treatments. Several new chapters have been added, covering eyelid myoclonia, Rasmussen's syndrome, cognitive and behavioural manifestations of epilepsy, and vagal nerve stimulation. This book is essential reading for paediatric neurologists, epileptologists and paediatricians, and will continue to provide invaluable support for any physician confronted by a child with epilepsy.

Download or read book Epilepsy Across the Spectrum written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-07-29 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although epilepsy is one of the nation's most common neurological disorders, public understanding of it is limited. Many people do not know the causes of epilepsy or what they should do if they see someone having a seizure. Epilepsy is a complex spectrum of disorders that affects an estimated 2.2 million Americans in a variety of ways, and is characterized by unpredictable seizures that differ in type, cause, and severity. Yet living with epilepsy is about much more than just seizures; the disorder is often defined in practical terms, such as challenges in school, uncertainties about social situations and employment, limitations on driving, and questions about independent living. The Institute of Medicine was asked to examine the public health dimensions of the epilepsies, focusing on public health surveillance and data collection; population and public health research; health policy, health care, and human services; and education for people with the disorder and their families, health care providers, and the public. In Epilepsy Across the Spectrum, the IOM makes recommendations ranging from the expansion of collaborative epilepsy surveillance efforts, to the coordination of public awareness efforts, to the engagement of people with epilepsy and their families in education, dissemination, and advocacy for improved care and services. Taking action across multiple dimensions will improve the lives of people with epilepsy and their families. The realistic, feasible, and action-oriented recommendations in this report can help enable short- and long-term improvements for people with epilepsy. For all epilepsy organizations and advocates, local, state, and federal agencies, researchers, health care professionals, people with epilepsy, as well as the public, Epilepsy Across the Spectrum is an essential resource.

Book Cognitive and Behavioral Abnormalities of Pediatric Diseases

Download or read book Cognitive and Behavioral Abnormalities of Pediatric Diseases written by Ruth D. Nass and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed account of intellectual, other neuropsychological and behavioral manifestations of general pediatric diseases. The conditions discussed include the whole range of pediatric diseases - genetic syndromes, other congenital conditions, metabolic, endocrine, gastrointestinal, infectious, immunologic, toxic, trauma, and neoplastic, as well as sensory disabilities including deafness and blindness. Although the book is not intended to discuss cognitive and behavioral manifestations of conditions usually considered to be primary neurological disease, some of those, including cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, myotonic dystrophy and epilepsy, are included. Where possible, a "translational" approach is used, linking the behavioral and cognitive manifestations of these conditions, to the underlying structural, chemical or genetic abnormalities and their effect on the brain, and, in turn, on behavior and cognition. At the same time, included are significant psychosocial factors. Together, those factors have a major effect on patients' performance, including school performance, and on their families. This book is unique in its extensive coverage of the major pediatric conditions and of the detailed neurological, neuropsychological and behavioral aspects of each condition.
