This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coercive Population Control in China: Hearings Before the Subcommittee on International Operations and Human Rights of the Committee on International Relations, House of Representatives, One Hundred Fourth Congress, First Session; May 17, June 22 and 28, and July 19, 1995 Mr. Aird. Concern for human rights is widely shared among the American people, including Members of the Congress, Presidents, and government officials. The United States has played a major role in promoting the idea of universal human rights not only through the United Nations but in its own relations with other countries. But our policies and actions have not always matched our words. Human rights considerations sometimes come in conflict with the objectives of various domestic interest groups who try with some success to get the government to strike compromises that serve their own agenda. This book was released on 2016-01-25 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's one-child policy is state-sponsored violence against women and children. In 2015, the one-child policy marked its 35th anniversary. It has been called the world's largest social experiment and has had tragic effects on Chinese families and society. Coercive population control policies are also the cause of a demographic time bomb. China has a rapidly aging population, a shrinking labor force, and a dramatic gender imbalance that drives regional human trafficking problems and potentially higher levels of crime and societal instability. China's central government has started to gently revise its population control policies in the past year, though the overall policy and the huge bureaucracy that enforces it remain intact. That's 35 years of telling couples what their families must look like, 35 years of forced and coerced abortions and sterilizations, 35 years of children viewed by the state as excess baggage from the day that they were conceived. The human rights violations associated with this policy are massive. We have only recently begun to fully understand the demographic consequences of what that could mean for China, for China's neighbors, and for the rest of the world.

Book Fertility Family Planning and Population Policy in China

Download or read book Fertility Family Planning and Population Policy in China written by Chiung-Fang Chang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-12-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's one-child population policy, first initiated in 1979, has had an enormous effect on the country’s development. By reducing its fertility in the past two decades to less than two children per woman, and developing a family planning program focused heavily on sterilization and abortion, China has undergone a significant transition in status to a demographically developed country. Bringing together contributions from leading academics, this book looks at the impact of the government's strict control over planning and population growth on the family, the wider society and the country's demography. The contributors examine developments such as family planning policy and contraceptive use, biological and social determinants of fertility, patterns of family and marriage and China's future population trends. As such it will be essential reading for academics, researchers, policy makers and government officials with an interest in China’s population policy.
