Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From dwarves to princes, heroes to heartbreakers, the Disney treatment of male characters in the studio’s animated features. One of PopSugar’s Best Books for Women (2013) From the iconic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) to Tangled, the 2010 retelling of Rapunzel, Handsome Heroes and Vile Villains looks at the portrayal of male characters in Disney films from the perspective of masculinity studies and feminist film theory. This companion volume to Good Girls and Wicked Witches places these depictions within the context of Hollywood and American popular culture at the time of each film’s release. “Within her idealism and love for the House of the Mouse, it seems Davis is on to something. Whether idealistic or delusional, the Disney she talks about seems to be a thing that’s waiting just around the corner.” —PopMatters

This book was released on 2019 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With claims staked, 1870s prospectors at Cooke City patiently waited for adequate transportation to get their ore to market. Eager enough, they named the town in honor of Northern Pacific tycoon Jay Cooke. Ironically, Cooke's influence in creating Yellowstone National Park stunted the growth of the town, as the park blocked any efforts to support a railroad through its borders. For more than sixty years, residents waited for rail until a new economy took hold--tourism. The dreams of the miners still live on in tumble-down shacks and rusty old mining equipment. And the successful vision of entrepreneurs offering rustic relaxation at the doorstep of Yellowstone continues to lure visitors. Historian Kelly Hartman recounts the saga that left hundreds battling for a railroad that never came.

Book Storming the Eagle s Nest

Download or read book Storming the Eagle s Nest written by Jim Ring and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Fall of France in June 1940 to Hitler's suicide in April 1945, the swastika flew from the peaks of the High Savoy in the western Alps to the passes above Ljubljana in the east. The Alps as much as Berlin were the heart of the Third Reich.'Yes,' Hitler declared of his headquarters in the Bavarian Alps, 'I have a close link to this mountain. Much was done there, came about and ended there; those were the best times of my life . . . My great plans were forged there.'With great authority and verve, Jim Ring tells the story of how the war was conceived and directed from the Fuhrer's mountain retreat, how all the Alps bar Switzerland fell to Fascism, and how Switzerland herself became the Nazi's banker and Europe's spy centre. How the Alps in France, Italy and Yugoslavia became cradles of resistance, how the range proved both a sanctuary and a death-trap for Europe's Jews - and how the whole war culminated in the Allies' descent on what was rumoured to be Hitler's Alpine Redoubt, a Bavarian mountain fortress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wyoming State Legislature approved the formation of Park County--named in honor of Yellowstone National Park--on February 15, 1909. Early fur traders such as John Colter and George Drouillard traversed the area in the early 1800s, opening trade with the indigenous Crow and Shoshone. In the middle of the 19th century, buffalo hunters, miners, ranchers, and homesteaders arrived and displaced the indigenous people in the area, establishing trading posts and the cowboy town of Meeteetse. The region's natural wonders inspired conservationists to lobby Congress to create Yellowstone National Park in 1872 and Shoshone National Forest in 1891. In the 1890s, Buffalo Bill Cody spearheaded an effort to irrigate arid lands and established productive farms and new towns such as Powell and Cody. The scenery and outdoor recreation opportunities lured many tourists to the area, including Ernest Hemingway and Amelia Earhart. From the mountain peaks to the river valleys, Park County offers insight into the extraordinary history of the American West.

Book William F Cody s Wyoming Empire

Download or read book William F Cody s Wyoming Empire written by Robert E. Bonner and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrated showman of the Old West, William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody took on another role unknown to most Americans, that of the western land developer and town promoter. In this captivating study, Robert E. Bonner demonstrates that the skills Cody acquired from decades in show business failed to prepare him for the demanding arena of business and finance. Bonner examines Cody’s efforts as president of the Shoshone Irrigation Company to develop the Big Horn Basin through large-scale irrigation and town development. This meticulously researched account shows us a Buffalo Bill preoccupied with making a buck and not at all shy about using his fame to do it. Cody spent huge sums, bullied partners, patronized state officials, and exercised his charm in pursuit of developing the high plains east of Yellowstone National Park. His efforts helped shape the city of Cody and the Big Horn Basin. With the famous Irma Hotel as a cornerstone, he built the first infrastructure of the Cody-Yellowstone tourist trade and connected his little Wyoming town with the wealth of the East through personal hospitality and travel. Laced with engaging anecdotes and featuring more than twenty photographs, William F. Cody’s Wyoming Empire is a much needed look at an overly mythologized character. There was more to William F. Cody than the Wild West show—and we cannot construct a full picture of the man without understanding his entrepreneurial activities in Wyoming.

Book The Great Eagles

  • Publisher : CRC Press

Download or read book The Great Eagles written by Michael O'Neal Campbell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-05-19 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the current literature and knowledge on the evolution and ecology of all the birds named as eagles, with particular emphasis on the larger species. It also examines the past and current relations between eagles and people, including habitat change and conservation issues. Eagle ecologies and conservation are currently seriously impacted by human activities such as industrialization, urbanization, pollution, deforestation and hunting. Some eagle species have consequently experienced extreme population changes. There are, however, some positive developments. Eagles have a strong, historic bond with human civilization, due to their status as the world’s most charismatic birds. Conservation policies have also been successful in repopulating some ecosystems with breeding eagles. Therefore, despite the complexity of this relationship, there may yet be hope for this unique species group, frequently rated as the kings of birds, and symbolic of human power, ambition, royalty, nationality, and even concepts of God. It is hoped that this book will contribute to the further understanding of these unique and fantastic birds.
