Book excerpt: When Colin Grier is ordered by a covert office in the World Health Organization to investigate a bizarre disease outbreak in New Guinea, he is introduced to a fantastic world of possibilities that he never dreamed existed. While in New Guinea, he meets a beautiful, paralyzed woman called Margo, who is travelling with her father aboard a privately funded research ship in search of an ancient Khmer temple. While onboard, Margo and Colin become fast friends, and Margo eventually discloses that she has psychic abilities. Her visions eventually lead Colin to some twelfth-century Khmer temple ruins, where they discover part of an ancient telescope. Although the find is a major victory for anthropology, the group also discovers the source of the disease outbreak within the temple, and Colin is forced to choose between stopping the disease at its source and curing Margos paralysis. But with an impending attack from the World Health Organizations SWAT team, Colin must decide: will he save the woman he loves or choose to stop the spreading disease-and possibly change the course of history.

Book Cooperative Information Agents V

Download or read book Cooperative Information Agents V written by Matthias Klusch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the proceedings of the Fifth International Workshop on Cooperative Information Agents, held in Modena, Italy, September 6-8, 2001. Information agent technology has become one of the major key technologies for the Internet and the World Wide Web. It mainly emerged as a response to the challenges of cyberspace from both the technological and human user perspective. Development of information agents requires expertise from di?erent research disciplines such as Arti?cial Intelligence (AI), advanced databases and knowledge base systems, distributed information systems, information retrieval, and Human Computer Interaction (HCI). The ?fth international workshop on Cooperative Information Agents (CIA) continued the tradition by capturing the intrinsic interdisciplinary nature of the above research area by calling for contributions from di?erent research communities, and by promoting open and informative discussions on all related topics. In keeping with tradition, the workshop featured a sequence of regular and invited talks of excellence given by leading experts in the ?eld. This year the topics of the talks are mainly on the challenges of information agents in the upcoming age of ubiquitous and pervasive computing. These challenges are in particular due to the necessity of an e?cient utilization, evolution, and trust management of information agents for user-oriented information search, pro- sion, and visualization in networked computing environments with small, mobile, and embedded devices. A di?erent issue concerns the potential of agent-based support of massive distributed data warehousing worldwide.

Book Corporate Governance as a Limited Legal Concept

Download or read book Corporate Governance as a Limited Legal Concept written by Cornelis de Groot and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of corporate governance has come under intense public scrutiny in recent years. Business people everywhere are asking: What exactly does and‘goodand’ corporate governance entail? Which aspects of it are legally binding, and in what ways is it merely a set of expectations on how corporations should be organized ideally? Nowhere are these important questions answered more precisely - nowhere are the lines more clearly drawn - than in the insightful synthesis of statutory law, case law, and organizational theory presented in this book. Recognizing that the concept of and‘goodand’ corporate governance is not dramatically different from one jurisdiction to another but represents an international phenomenon that has to a reasonable extent the same characteristics everywhere, the author proceeds, with detailed analysis, through a series of issues that (he shows) make up the brunt of corporate governance. Each of these issues in turn gives rise to such specific problem areas as the following: board compensation and executive compensation; unitary and dual board structures; monitoring management; legal parameters of and‘mismanagementand’; the and‘supervisory gapand’; audit, selection and appointment and remuneration committees; director tenure and retirement policy; risk management and risk reporting; corporate safety culture; conflicts of interest; whistleblower arrangements; aims of the regulation of public takeover bids; and defensive tactics in case of a hostile public takeover bid. These problems - and many others - are examined in the light of corporate governance codes and guidelines and of reports and judgments that deal with specific instances where investigators or courts were asked to analyze corporate governance issues in concrete cases. Each of the ten chapters includes in-depth analysis of such cases. A special feature of the book is a set of model corporate governance guidelines based on US corporate practice. Corporate Governance as a Limited Legal Concept is remarkable for its very thorough characterization and definition of corporate governance as a legal concept, as a code of conduct, and as an organizational structure. The authorand’s clearly reasoned analysis of the legal limits of corporate governance will be of great interest and practical value to business people and their counsel in any jurisdiction.

Book Computational Modelling and Simulation of Aircraft and the Environment Volume 1

Download or read book Computational Modelling and Simulation of Aircraft and the Environment Volume 1 written by Dominic J. Diston and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-20 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of Computational Modelling of Aircraft and the Environment provides a comprehensive guide to the derivation of computational models from basic physical & mathematical principles, giving the reader sufficient information to be able to represent the basic architecture of the synthetic environment. Highly relevant to practitioners, it takes into account the multi-disciplinary nature of the aerospace environment and the integrated nature of the models needed to represent it. Coupled with the forthcoming Volume 2: Aircraft Models and Flight Dynamics it represents a complete reference to the modelling and simulation of aircraft and the environment. All major principles with this book are demonstrated using MATLAB and the detailed mathematics is developed progressively and fully within the context of each individual topic area, thereby rendering the comprehensive body of material digestible as an introductory level text. The author has drawn from his experience as a modelling and simulation specialist with BAE SYSTEMS along with his more recent academic career to create a resource that will appeal to and benefit senior/graduate students and industry practitioners alike.

Book Radio Galaxies at TeV Energies

Download or read book Radio Galaxies at TeV Energies written by Dorit Glawion and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-05-13 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is common believe that the centers of all galaxies exhibit supermassive black holes with masses ranging from millions up to billions of the mass of our Sun. By accreting surrounding matter, the luminosity of these galactic nuclei can outshine the emission of their host galaxies. If this is the case, they are called active galactic nuclei. Some of these objects eject powerful outflows composed of plasma, called jets. These jets can produce non-thermal radiation which observable across the entire electromagnetic spectrum from radio up to the gamma-ray frequencies. At highest frequencies (TeV range) most of the detected active galaxies have jets directed along or close to the line of sight. However, also galaxies with larger angles to the line of sight showing fascinating features were discovered, in seeming contradiction to traditional models for these so-called radio galaxies. Thus, the latter are of particular importance for understanding active galactic nuclei in general. This Special Issue contains reviews and research articles about the current knowledge of radio galaxies at TeV energies, including observational results and theoretical models. It is intended to guide the interested reader deeper into this fascinating discipline of modern day astronomy.
