Book A Minority of One

Download or read book A Minority of One written by Wally Payne and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-05 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notwithstanding his swift progression through the ranks, the author's contempt for those he considers unworthy of positions of authority remains undiminished. An inability to bear fools gladly, his outspoken manner and a reputation as a fighter of lost causes does little to endear him to his commanders. His primary concerns are to enjoy life to the full and the well-being of the men in his charge. He claims a modicum of success on both fronts. To the bewilderment of many and the utter disgust of others, the Army sees fit to commission the man so adept at swimming against the tide. It's said that, on moonless nights at the Royal Military Police Training Centre in Chichester, the ghostly sound of resentful retching into galvanized buckets may be heard to this day.

Book The Many Lives of Scary Clowns

Download or read book The Many Lives of Scary Clowns written by Ron Riekki and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-05-16 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frightening yet comic clown is one of the best and most enduring characters in literature, theater, television, and film. Across the centuries, from Shakespeare's Porter in Macbeth to Edgar Allan Poe's "Hop-Frog," or Stephen King's Pennywise, horror and comedy have blended to create the perfect recipe for entertainment. This volume gives an in-depth analysis of the clown horror genre, including essays by revered horror scholars such as Kevin Wetmore, Dale Bailey, Kim Hester Williams, Jennifer K. Cox, and Joanna Parypinski. Their essays cover topics such as nostalgia, race, class, and new portrayals of the scary clown as zombies or phantoms. It also offers interviews with actors and directors working in the clown horror genre: Eoghan McQuinn (Stitches), Kevin Kangas (Fear of Clowns), and Jaysen Buterin (Kill Giggles). Some of fiction's most terrifying creations--like the Killer Klowns, Captain Spaulding, Art the Clown, Krusty, Frowny, the Joker, and Twisty--jig through these pages of analysis and deconstruction, asking what these many iterations of scary clowns have to say about our society and its fears.

Book Clown Scenes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tristan Remy
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2024-03-26
  • ISBN : 1493082078
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Clown Scenes written by Tristan Remy and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-03-26 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intimacy of the one-ring circus produced the classic clown routines that flourished until the mid-twentieth century and then disappeared with the rise of the grand circus. They have been lost until now. By seeking out the little band of surviving clowns who worked in the old tradition and setting down their scenes, Tristan Rémy, the eminent circus historian, has rescued a theatrical treasure. Thanks to Rémy's persistence, the forty-eight scenes presented here contain not only the spoken words but the manner of line delivery and the physical turns. So they remain superbly suitable for performance. Most of them are written for just three actors—the white-faced clown, August the stooge, and the supercilious ringmaster. Sets are unnecessary. And their combination of the verbal with the physical has timeless appeal. Bernard Sahlins's translation is masterfully attuned to present-day audiences. In his foreword, Mr. Sahlins notes that these scenes have been continually remounted in Europe, attesting to their fundamental vitality and universality. “Clearly there is a debt, witting and unwitting, owed to the clown of the ring by the great comedians of our century. With this book these scenes and the clowns who invented and played them now take their honored place in our theatrical legacy.”

Book Beneath the Big Top

Download or read book Beneath the Big Top written by Steve Ward and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A valuable and illuminating read, shedding a lot of light on the political, economic and technological factors that have driven circus evolution” (The Circus Diaries). Beneath the Big Top is a social history of the circus, from its ancient roots to the rise of the “modern” tented travelling shows. A performer and founder of a circus group, Steve Ward draws on eyewitness accounts and contemporary interviews to explore the triumphs and disasters of the circus world. He reveals the stories beneath the big top during the golden age of the circus and the lives of circus folk, which were equally colorful outside the ring: • Pablo Fanque, Britain’s first black circus proprietor • The Chipperfield dynasty, who started out in 1684 on the frozen Thames • Katie Sandwina, world’s strongest woman and part-time crime-fighter • The Sylvain brothers, who fell in love with the same woman in the ring “As a former circus performer and now teacher and circus professional I thoroughly enjoyed this book!! The Circus has such a rich history and Steve does an amazing job at not only chronicling it but also telling entertaining and wonderful stories throughout. The photos are also amazing!! I recommend this book for both circus professionals and also for everyone else . . . it is a fabulous read for all!!” —Carrie Heller, Circus Arts Institute (Atlanta, GA)

Book excerpt: In 1947 the Circus Clowns Club began keeping a record of its' member clowns' make-up. Each clown's unique makeup was painted onto an egg which was maintained as a register in order to trademark the identity of established clowns. The original eggs were painted on real chicken egg shells by the first head of the Circus Clowns Club, Stan Bult. These eggs now form part of the Clowns' Gallery and Museum in London and include some of the most famous clowns in circus history, such as Co-Co, Lou Harris and Grimaldi. Birth of a Clown is a book of photographs by Sam Taylor-Wood who discovered the museum while researching clowns as part of a larger project. These 53 photographs contain the oldest of the eggs as well as some newer ones and preserve the eggs as they are now - an odd remnant of a utilitarian project.

Book ClownFellas

  • Pages : 536 pages

Download or read book ClownFellas written by Carlton Mellick, III and published by Hydra. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Carlton Mellick III goes past silly, through weird, detours around dumb, blasts through bizarre, and gets to a place where the normal physics of narrative no longer apply. You will never be the same.”—Cory Doctorow, author of Little Brother and Homeland In a topsy-turvy world where clowns are killers and crooks, Little Bigtop is a three-ring circus of crime, and no syndicate is more dangerous than the Binzo family. From the wildly original mind of Carlton Mellick III comes the short-story collection ClownFellas—an epic mob saga where life is cheap and the gags will slay you. For years, the hard-boiled capos of the Binzo family have run all of the funny business in Little Bigtop, from the clown brothels to the illegal comedy trade. But hard times have befallen the Binzos now that Le Mystère, the French clown Mafia, has started moving in and trying to take over the city. If that weren’t enough, they’ve got to deal with the cops, the Feds, the snitches, the carnies, the mysterious hit man Mr. Pogo, and the mutant clowns over in the Sideshow district. With the odds stacked against them, the Binzos must fight to survive . . . or die laughing. Praise for ClownFellas “Mario Puzo meets Barnum & Bailey . . . You just can’t look away as the ridiculousness escalates.”—Publishers Weekly “The most original novelist working today? The most outrageous? The most unpredictable? These aren’t easy superlatives to make; however, Carlton Mellick may well be all of those things, behind a canon of books that all irreverently depart from the form and concepts of traditional novels, and adventure the reader into a howling, dark fantasyland of the most bizarre, over-the-top, and mind-warping inventiveness. In my opinion, ClownFellas is his best work to date.”—Edward Lee, author of City Infernal and Header “I rarely enjoy clowns—which is ironic since I’ve been one for over four decades—but ClownFellas is great on so many levels, irony being one of them. What can I say besides I love it! Great read, and funny as hell . . . I have been accused of being unfunny before, and after the trial I had to enter the Witless Protection Program. This is funny!”—Barry Lubin, aka Grandma, longtime Big Apple Circus clown “If Martin Scorsese and Ronald McDonald had a baby, this would be it. . . . Each story is clever, multi-layered, and filled with witty dialogue. . . . A must-read.”—This Is Horror “Mellick’s writing is wonderfully descriptive and wildly imaginative. . . . I was utterly delighted, amused, and engrossed. . . . ClownFellas is a gem!”—The Qwillery “A rollercoaster ride through a strange world that borders on our own reality . . . a story that is just as difficult to define as it is to put down.”—Examiner.com “Mellick has created another amazing read. . . . Highly recommended.”—Kitty Horror
