Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his seminal work 'Coca and its Therapeutic Application', Angelo Mariani delves into the historical and medicinal significance of the coca plant. This book explores the various uses of coca leaves, ranging from traditional rituals to modern medicine, shedding light on its potential therapeutic benefits. Mariani's writing style is both scholarly and engaging, drawing on scientific research and historical anecdotes to support his arguments. The book not only discusses the pharmacological effects of coca but also examines its cultural and social implications. Set against the backdrop of the late 19th century, Mariani's work provides a comprehensive overview of coca's evolution and changing perceptions. Angelo Mariani, a renowned pharmacologist and researcher, was inspired to write this book due to his dedication to uncovering the truth about coca's properties and challenging misconceptions surrounding the plant. His expertise in the field lends credibility to the insights presented in the book, making it a valuable resource for academics and enthusiasts interested in the intersection of medicine and culture. I highly recommend 'Coca and its Therapeutic Application' to readers seeking a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between plants, medicine, and society.

Book excerpt: A lavishly illustrated history of coca wine and the revolutionary advertising methods that made it a world-wide success • Follows 19th-century pharmacist Angelo Mariani’s interest in coca from medical uses to the development and healing effects of his world-famous coca wine, Vin Mariani • Explores the botany of coca, how it differs from cocaine, its traditional uses, and early scientific studies on coca from doctors, including Sigmund Freud • Examines Mariani’s highly successful international advertising campaigns, the first to use celebrity endorsements, including testimonies from Pope Benedict XV, Sarah Bernhardt, Thomas Edison, Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, William McKinley, Emile Zola, and Alphonse Mucha One of the oldest and most potent natural stimulants, the leaves of the coca plant are the organic source from which cocaine is synthesized. Fresh coca leaves and products made from them have verified medicinal and healing properties--and not the same addictive qualities or negative side effects as cocaine. In the late 19th century coca products became hugely successful in Europe and the United States. The most famous was Vin Mariani, a coca-based tonic wine developed by Corsican pharmacist Angelo Mariani (1838-1914). Many celebrities sang its praises, including Pope Benedict XV, Sarah Bernhardt, Thomas Edison, H. G. Wells, William McKinley, Emile Zola, and the doctors of Ulysses S. Grant, who credited Vin Mariani with giving him the strength to finish his memoirs before his death. In this full-color illustrated history of coca wine, the first of its kind, author Aymon de Lestrange follows Mariani’s interest in coca from its medicinal applications to the creation of the tonic wine. The author explores the botany of coca, how it differs from cocaine, its traditional use in pre-Columbian America, and scientific studies on coca from the 17th through 19th centuries, including from Sigmund Freud, who was a known user. He describes the introduction of coca in the U.S. and France and the many coca preparations then available at drugstores. He also studies the introduction of cocaine in these two countries and the prohibition laws that followed. Aymon de Lestrange demonstrates how Mariani became, in many ways, the father of modern advertising with his highly successful advertising campaigns. He includes vivid reproductions of Mariani’s advertisements, many not seen since their original publication in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and shows how Mariani commissioned the top writers and artists of the day, such as Jules Chéret and Alphonse Mucha, to produce works celebrating coca wine. The author reveals how Vin Mariani was the forerunner of Coca-Cola, which clearly plagiarized not only Mariani’s product but also his advertising methods. Looking to the future of coca, the author shows how it has gained renewed interest in the scientific community for its therapeutic and nutritional properties and in the spiritual community, which is seeking to rehabilitate the reputation of coca, the sacred plant of the Incas.

Book COCA AND COCAINE THEIR HISTORY MEDICAL AND ECONOMIC USES AND MEDICINAL PREPARATIONS

Download or read book COCA AND COCAINE THEIR HISTORY MEDICAL AND ECONOMIC USES AND MEDICINAL PREPARATIONS written by WILLIAM MARTINDALE and published by BEYOND BOOKS HUB. This book was released on 2023-05-05 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have been induced to compile this brochure, as supplementary to the short description of Coca given in the “Extra Pharmacopeia,” on account of the attention this plant, and its alkaloid Cocaine, have excited during the past eighteen months. Although made known to us soon after the conquest of Peru by Pizarro — more than three centuries ago — the accounts travellers have given of Coca have only received about the same credence, and been treated with about the same reverence as we pay to a myth. We have considered the writers as having been overcredulous, as in some cases they undoubtedly were. It was thought the use of the leaves by the Indians of Peru was only that of a masticatory, which simply increased the flow of saliva. We looked upon its so-called nutritive properties, or rather its hunger and thirst-appeasing effects, as well as its power to ward off fatigue and relieve oppressive respiration during mountain ascents, as superstitions unworthy of more attention than the betel-nut mastication practised in India. The surgical uses of Cocaine as a local anaesthetic have, however, to some extent dispelled these illusions, and we have been more ready to receive the accounts of early as well as recent travellers, thinking “there may be something in them.” I have endeavoured to reproduce what many have written, as much as possible in their own words, or translations of them. The old habit of Coca chewing has clung to the Peruvian Indians after their “power, civilisation, language, alphabets, writings, and even old religions have disappeared,” says Johnston, “the common-life customs and the bodily features of the people have alone survived.” By him Coca is classed among the “Narcotics we indulge in,” along with Tobacco, Hop, Poppy and Lettuce, Indian Hemp, Areca or Betel-nut, Ava or Kava, Red Thorn Apple (Datura sanguinea) fruit, also in use among the Indians of the Andes, Siberian Fungus or Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria), and Sweet Gale (Myrica Gale), formerly used to give bitterness and strength to the fermented liquors of the ancient Britons. But physiologists have more recently classed it with Tea, Coffee, Maté, Kola Nut, and Cocoa — the Theine- (Methyl-Theobromine) and Theobromine-yielding plants — although Cocaine has no chemical alliance with these principles. As a beverage to substitute for tea or coffee, a decoction or an infusion of Coca is worthy of attention at the present time. The Indian use of it in moderation seems to prolong life, without much need of sleep or food, or even the desire for these, although in excess it has, no doubt, a degrading effect. A taste for infusion or decoction of Coca or its pharmaceutical preparations is easily acquired; if a good sample of leaves be used it is not even at first disagreeable...FROM THE BOOKS
