Book The Physical Metallurgy of Cobalt base Superalloys

Download or read book The Physical Metallurgy of Cobalt base Superalloys written by H J Wagner and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed picture is presented of the physical and chemical phenomena that affect the behavior of cobalt-base superalloys. Solid-solution strengthening is obtained from the high-melting metallic elements molybdenum, tungsten, tantalum, and columbium. These elements also participate in precipitation reactions involving their carbides. Precipitation of intermetallic compounds such as Ni3Ti is an important process in cobalt alloys containing appreciable amounts of nickel and titanium. The relationships among microstructure, heat treatment, and mechanical properties of the important commercial alloys are considered, and whenever possible, explained on the basis of the physical and chem cal processes that occur. Book Extractive Metallurgy of Nickel Cobalt and Platinum Group Metals

Download or read book Extractive Metallurgy of Nickel Cobalt and Platinum Group Metals written by Frank Crundwell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and explains the methods by which three related ores and recyclables are made into high purity metals and chemicals, for materials processing. It focuses on present day processes and future developments rather than historical processes. Nickel, cobalt and platinum group metals are key elements for materials processing. They occur together in one book because they (i) map together on the periodic table (ii) occur together in many ores and (iii) are natural partners for further materials processing and materials manufacturing. They all are, for example, important catalysts – with platinum group metals being especially important for reducing car and truck emissions. Stainless steels and CoNiFe airplane engine super alloys are examples of practical usage. The product emphasises a sequential, building-block approach to the subject gained through the author’s previous writings (particularly Extractive Metallurgy of Copper in four editions) and extensive experience. Due to the multiple metals involved and because each metal originates in several types of ore – e.g. tropical ores and arctic ores this necessitates a multi-contributor work drawing from multiple networks and both engineering and science. Synthesizes detailed review of the fundamental chemistry and physics of extractive metallurgy with practical lessons from industrial consultancies at the leading international plants Discusses Nickel, Cobalt and Platinum Group Metals for the first time in one book Reviews extraction of multiple metals from the same tropical or arctic ore Industrial, international and multidisciplinary focus on current standards of production supports best practice use of industrial resources

Download or read book Cobalt written by Paula Johanson and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2008-01-15 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cobalt (Co) was discovered by Swedish chemist Georg Brandt in 1735. Readers learn that cobalt is a transition metal, and that it is ferromagnetic. Only cobalt, nickel, and iron (and some of their alloys) can permanently align their atoms and become a permanent magnet. Cobalt can be found in rocky ores in Africa and Canada. It is very active chemically and forms many compounds, including cobaltous and cobaltic salts. Cobalt is used as a coloring agent, in paints, glass, ceramics, and enamels. A radioactive isotope of cobalt, called cobalt-60, can be used as a tracer in industry to show where pipes are leaking, and in medicine by doctors as a radioactive dye to trace out a person’s blood vessels in part or all of a person’s body in helping them to diagnose many kinds of illness.

Book Influence of Silicon on Friction and Wear of Iron cobalt Alloys

Download or read book Influence of Silicon on Friction and Wear of Iron cobalt Alloys written by Donald H. Buckley and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sliding friction and wear experiments were conducted with ternary ordered alloys of iron and cobalt containing various amounts of silicon to 5 weight percent. The friction and wear of these alloys were compared to those for binary iron-cobalt alloys in the ordered and disordered states and to those for the conventionally used bearing material, 440-C. Environments in which experiments were conducted included air, argon, and 0.25percent stearic acid in hexadecane. Results indicate that a ternary iron - cobalt - 5-percent-silicon alloy exhibits lower friction and wear than the simple binary iron-cobalt alloy. It exhibits lower wear than 440-C in all three environments. Friction was lower for the alloy in argon than in air. Auger analysis of the surface of the ternary alloy indicated segregation of silicon at the surface as a result of sliding.

Book Mechanism and Kinetics of Corrosion of Selected Iron and Cobalt Alloys in Refluxing Mercury

Download or read book Mechanism and Kinetics of Corrosion of Selected Iron and Cobalt Alloys in Refluxing Mercury written by and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five alloys of engineering interest, the cobalt-base HS-25 and H-8187 and the iron- base SICROMO-9M, AM-350, and AM-355, were corrosion tested in boiling mercury in the temperature range of 1000 degrees to 1300 degrees F (811 degrees to 977 degrees K) for times as long as 6000 hours. Metallographic, chemical, and physical analyses were used to determine the extent and the nature of the corrosion. Corrosion mechanism and reaction kinetics were inferred through a comparison of experimental and theoretical kinetic constants. The experimental kinetic constants (i. e., the time-law constant b(sub Gamma) and the activation energy Delta Eta Gamma) were obtained from the test data by multiple regression analysis. The theoretical kinetic constants b1 and Delta Eta 1 for each of i steps of proposed corrosion models were obtained from transport theory relations and the pertinent boundary conditions. Changes of mechanism during the progress of corrosion were indicated for all the alloys tested except the AM-350 and AM-355 alloys. The shifts from one corrosion regime to another were associated with changes in the nature and length of the corrosion- affected zone. Three corrosion regimes were characterized, linear Iota, parabolic, and linear II. The probable rate-determining step in the two linear rate regimes is boundary-layer diffusion. The probable rate-determining step in the parabolic rate regime is liquid diffusion.

Book Biocompatibility of Co Cr Ni Alloys

Download or read book Biocompatibility of Co Cr Ni Alloys written by H. Hildebrand and published by Springer. This book was released on 1988 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several years now scientific and medical sLaff have recognised the risks of toxicity of certain metals contained in alloys used in Lhe manufacture of biomaterials protheses, implants, and artificial organs. A number or scientific and industrial research centres have focussed their investigations in this direction and international societies and commissions have organised meetings with specialists from complementary disciplines in attendance in attempts to guage the importance of biological risks and to determine the toxicity of certain metals, with the aim of establishing preventive measures and guidelines. In the last century great efforts have been made to reduce unwanted biological effects caused by orthopaedic implants. The problems of pain and infection were overcome and the development of modern technology has resulted in a convincing decrease in corrosion problems and mechanical failure, such that ostosynthesis and endoprosthesis have rapidly progressed beyond the level of tentative investingation.llowever, a number of problems still remain to be solved, such as the influence of the material type on the healing process and its relative speed. The increasing use of cobalt-,chromium-and nickel-containing alloys in surgical and dental implants has raised various questions concerning the biological consequences of chronic internal release of these elements in the human body. A total of 55 delegates representing 16 countries heard presentations of fundamental aspects, local and remote tissue response, immunopathology, clinical aspects, and manufacturing qual ity control issues.
