Book excerpt: Calgary is home to people with diverse places of birth, languages, and ethnic and religious affiliations. Its membership in the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities against Racism and Discrimination and adoption of the municipal Welcoming Community Policy are clear signs of progressive steps towards inclusion and equality. Still, the persistently high national standings for police reported hate crime and frequent complaints of racial profiling among ethno-cultural members have reminded the community of the need to sustain dialogues and actions to address racial discrimination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities increasingly base their local policies on human rights. Human rights cities promise to forge new alliances between urban actors and international organizations, to enable the 'translation' of the abstract language of human rights to the local level, and to develop new practices designed to bring about global urban justice. This book brings together academics and practitioners at the forefront of human rights cities and the 'right to the city' movement to critically discuss their history and also the potential that human rights cities hold for global urban justice.

Book Striving for Environmental Sustainability in a Complex World

Download or read book Striving for Environmental Sustainability in a Complex World written by George Francis and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the face of growing anxiety about the environmental sustainability of the world, George Francis, a leading authority in the field of sustainability studies, examines initiatives undertaken in Canada over the past twenty-five years to protect some of our unique environments. With rich and varied insight, spirited prose, and a deep and personal engagement with the material, the author documents the challenges faced by those who manage complex sustainability projects. Focusing mainly on collaborative studies of sixteen landscape regions designated as “Biosphere Reserves” by UNESCO and fifteen regions designated as “Model Forests” by the Canadian Forest Service, the book also summarizes a number of smaller sustainability initiatives in regions across the country. The author concludes on a hopeful note, looking forward to a future of solutions – those considered, proposed, promoted, and in some cases already implemented by groups striving to create sustainable societies in an increasingly complex world.

Book Municipalities and Multiculturalism

Download or read book Municipalities and Multiculturalism written by Kristin Good and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-10-14 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian model of diversity management is considered a success in the international community, yet the methods by which these policies are adopted by local governments have seldom been studied. Municipalities and Multiculturalism explores the role of the municipality in integrating immigrants and managing the ethno-cultural relations of the city. Throughout the study, Kristin R. Good uses original interviews with close to 100 local leaders of eight municipalities in Toronto and Vancouver, two of Canada's most diverse urban and suburban areas. Grounded by Canada's official multiculturalism policies, she develops a typology of responsiveness to immigrants and ethno-cultural minorities and offers an explanation for policy variations among municipalities. Municipalities and Multiculturalism is an important examination of the differing diversity management methods in Canadian cities, and ultimately contributes to debates concerning the roles that municipal governments should play within Canada's political system.

Book Racism Governance and Public Policy

Download or read book Racism Governance and Public Policy written by Katy Sian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-07 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new framing of policy debates on the question of racism through a discursive critique of contemporary issues and contexts, drawing on a program of new European research carried out between 2010 and 2013, with a central focus on the UK. This includes analysis of the discursive construction of Muslims in three contexts: the workplace, education and the media. Informed by a fundamental critique of both the "post-racial" and the limitations of human rights strategies, it identifies the ongoing significance of contemporary raciality in governance strategies and develops a new radical agenda for addressing these processes, advocating strategies of "racism reduction."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiculturalism is regarded as a key feature of Canada’s national identity. Yet despite an increasingly diverse population, racialized Canadians are systematically excluded from full participation in society through personal and structural forms of racism and discrimination.
