Book Correlation of Producing Fruitland Formation Coals Within the Western Outcrop and Coalbed Methane Leakage on the Southern Ute Reservation

Download or read book Correlation of Producing Fruitland Formation Coals Within the Western Outcrop and Coalbed Methane Leakage on the Southern Ute Reservation written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colorado Geological Survey and Southern Ute Indian Tribe proposed to determine the cause of several gas seeps which are occurring on the western outcrop of the coalbed methane producing Fruitland Formation on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation. Correlation between outcrop coals and subsurface coals was necessary to determine seep source in the northern part of the study area. Subsurface studies include structure and net coal isopach maps, stratigraphy was cross-sections, production maps, and a production database. Detailed coal stratigraphy was correlated through production wells near the outcrop region. These maps and cross-sections were correlated to new surface outcrop maps generated by the Colorado, Geological Survey and the Southern Ute Division of Energy Resources. Methane gas seepage has been noted historically within the study area. The total investigation may help determine if gas seepage is natural, a result of coalbed methane development, or some combination of the above.

Book Coalbed Methane Scientific Environmental and Economic Evaluation

Download or read book Coalbed Methane Scientific Environmental and Economic Evaluation written by M. Mastalerz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coalbed gas has been considered a hazard since the early 19th century when the first mine gas explosions occurred in the United States in 1810 and France in 1845. In eastern Australia methane-related mine disasters occurred late in the 19th century with hundreds of lives lost in New South Wales, and as recently as 1995 in Queensland's Bowen Basin. Ventilation and gas drainage technologies are now in practice. However, coalbed methane recently is becoming more recognized as a potential source of energy; rather than emitting this gas to the atmosphere during drainage of gassy mines it can be captured and utilized. Both economic and environmental concerns have sparked this impetus to capture coalbed methane. The number of methane utilization projects has increased in the United States in recent years as a result, to a large extent, of development in technology in methane recovery from coal seams. Between 1994 and 1997, the number of mines in Alabama, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia recovering and utilizing methane increased from 1 0 to 17. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that close to 49 billion cubic feet (Bet) of methane was recovered in 1996, meaning that this amount was not released into the atmosphere. It is estimated that in the same year total emissions of methane equaled 45. 7 Bcf. Other coal mines are being investigated at present, many ofwhich appear to be promising for the development of cost-effective gas recovery.

Book Evaluation of Coalbed Methane Resource Potential Using Limited Data

Download or read book Evaluation of Coalbed Methane Resource Potential Using Limited Data written by Oluwabiyi Michael Olaniran and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study presents the results of the evaluation of the Coalbed Methane (CBM) resource potential of the Cook Inlet Basin using a computer-aided well log analysis of the subsurface data. Coal seams were identified from the well logs. Formation and reservoir fluid properties including porosity, water saturation and net pay thickness of the coal seams were determined. The analysis revealed discontinuous coal seams interspaced largely by mudstone, silt, and sandstone formations within the depth of investigation. The CBM resource (Original Gas In Place) and recoverable reserves were estimated on per acre-foot basis. Monte Carlo simulation was run to refine the estimated CBM reserves and to allow for variations in the measured petrophysical input parameters used in the resource evaluation"--Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: "This paper presents a summary of the geological framework of the San Juan and Black Warrior basins, the two major coalbed methane producing basins in the United States, and provides a geological overview of the potential coalbed methane basins in Canada for comparison. Critical geological and production factors are discussed and an assessment of the coalbed methane opportunities in Canada is presented, providing a valuable reference for industry to use in future coalbed methane exploration activities." --

Book Potential for Recoverable Coalbed Methane Resources on Navy Lands

Download or read book Potential for Recoverable Coalbed Methane Resources on Navy Lands written by Steven C. Bjornstad and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents a literature search that was aimed at identifying the potential for recoverable coalbed methane resources at naval facilities in the United States. Several geologic factors that influence the occurrence of coalbed methane were examined, the most important of which is coal rank. Other factors include the formation pressure, the permeability and porosity of the coal, the degree of fracturing (deformational history), the depth of burial, the distance to the outcrop, and the permeability of adjacent strata. The evaluation of the potential of any natural resource requires the development of a working model to keep in perspective the many factors affecting the occurrence of that resource. Models based on major tectonic environments wre used in evaluating all naval facilities in the United States for their coalbed methane potential. While none of the sites was found to be in a primary target area for the occurrence of coalbed methane, several Navy sites were identified as having some potential. However, assessing that potential, determining the quality of the resource and the applicability of the resource ownership and the resource disposition, will take a great deal more effort. (Author).
