Book Coal Washing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Coal Washing Classic Reprint written by Ernst Prochaska and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coal Washing There will be always a difference between ideal performance and what is actually accomplished. A coal washery is an ex pensive installation, built for long service. During its useful life the art of coal washing may advance uninterruptedly. The necessary and justifiable desire of the operator to try out all useful inventions, tends in some degree to equalize the above difference. New apparatus can be added to an Old washery, but the total reconstruction of an existing plant, so as to bring it' up to modern practice, is hardly justified, since on account of the constant changes in our ideas and the development of new machinery, the remodeling of a plant would never be finished. To neglect in this description the older types of washeries, which are still in operation and doing good work, would put the present and future into too prominent a place. This book is intended to furnish the coal operator with the necessary knowledge whereby he may distinguish in washeries between the modern and earlier apparatus and methods which may be working side by side. Everything is omitted concerning apparatus which because of a lack of progressive spirit is still in use, even though it be archaic. Only a study of the chronological development of the art of coal washing will enable us to make a judicious selection of equipment. An effort is here made to set up a proper or standard rule for guidance in the presentas well as the future, from a survey of the experience of the past, with its mistakes and blind alleys, its roundabout ways and unwarranted short-cuts. Only such methods will be omitted as have been proven impracticable and useless. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Modification of Illinois Coal by Low Temperature Distillation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Modification of Illinois Coal by Low Temperature Distillation Classic Reprint written by S W Parr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modification of Illinois Coal by Low Temperature Distillation Concerning the waste of the fuel supply, there are broader reasons for economy than the mere selfish demands of the indi vidual or corporation interested. Notwithstanding the fact that the coal fields of the United States are extensive, the coal supply is not inexhaustible. Campbell1 states that at the present rate of increase, the available coal fields of this country will be used up in ninety years, but if the rate of consumption of 1905 remains constant the fields will last four thousand years. It is hardly possible that the great activity which has so characterized the past twenty-five years, in the building of railroads, steamship lines, and factories will be as marked in the future as it has been in the past. There will be, however, a constant increase in the con sumption of coal unless some new source of power is developed. It does not seem probable that the rate of increase will be materi ally affected for a great many years to come; hence, Campbell estimates that four hundred years will be nearer the truth than four thousand. The sources of loss are mainly two; one is found in wasteful methods used in the mining, and the other in the combustion of coal. Although it is not within the province of this work to dis cuss the present day methods of mining, it might be well to men tion the fact that from 40 to 60 per cent of the coal is left in the mine in the form of walls, pillars, roofs, dust, etc. In the matter of economic combustion, the advancement has been almost entire ly on the mechanical side as illustrated in the modern stokers, improved combustion chambers, the sizing and washing of coal, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Research Need of Illinois' Coal Industry: A Symposium Relating to Recovery, Preparation, Marketing Practice, Utilization, and Basic Research In the summer of 1928 when in London, I visited, among many other interesting places, the British Museum. The industrial exhibits in this museum indicate that the ancients were well versed in many of the industrial arts and that many of the ancient artisans were especially skillful. The ceramic industries Were especially well represented. Due perhaps to the fact that the knowledge of these arts was in a few hands, the knowledge was lost with the passing of the individuals possessing the information. The table is arranged by the counties from which the coal samples were collected. Where available, analyses of ashes from face samples are shown first, followed by analyses of various prepared products. Since the analyses for each county represent samples of coals of different size, gravity, etc. And since coal preparation influences the ash composition, it is not possible to arrive at reliable county averages. Book Problem Sites

Download or read book Problem Sites written by Jack R. Nawrot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problem Sites: Lands Affected by Underground Mining for Coal in Illinois Early coal mining in Illinois consisted of digging in outcrops along river bluffs or stripping shallow overburden from seams near the surface. Such techniques resulted in very little refuse (waste coal and other debris) at the surface, as most coal was selected by hand without further processing. Modern mining practices incorporating continuous mining machines, as well as the demand for clean, processed coal, has resulted in current refuse rates of 20 to 50 percent of the deep mined coal. In 1974, the nation's coal industry generated about 130 million tons of coal mine refuse (schlick and Wahler Refuse produced by underground mines in Illinois totaled an estimated 8 to 15 million tons in 1975, or approximately million cubic yards. Coal preparation plants produce two types of refuse material gob and slurry. Coarse refuse (plus 28 sieve or referred to as gob, contains waste coal, rock, pyrites, or other materials of relatively large size. The washing process produces effluent (minus 28 sieve), referred to as slurry, containing small coal particles, clay, and other debris (martin In the past, gob was deposited in refuse piles; slurry was pumped and deposited into streams, onto adjacent terrestrial areas, or into impoundments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Fifth Annual Coal Report of Illinois: State Mining Board, 1916 The year ended June 30, 1916, broke all records of the coal mining industry of Illinois. The total output in short tons is a gain of tons over 1914, which, up to the present year, had the greatest production in the history of the industry in this State. The increased production over last year is tons, or more than per cent. This increase is due to the fact that there were 24 more mines in Operation, 312 more men employed and that the working time was increased from 158 to 163 days. The average daily earnings of miners, where hand mining was done exclusively, is while last, year this class of employees earned a daily wage of An increase of five cents a day for the machine men and loaders in exclusive machine mines will be seen.
