Book Galaxy Evolution Across the Hubble Time IAU S235

Download or read book Galaxy Evolution Across the Hubble Time IAU S235 written by International Astronomical Union. Symposium and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-17 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This last decade has witnessed a revolution in our observations of galaxies; in particular deep imaging with HST and spectroscopy with 10m-class ground-based telescopes have uncovered many objects that are difficult to place along the Hubble sequence. High resolution spectroscopy of extremely faint objects has enabled the study of the kinematic evolution and, hence, the mass assembly of galaxies to unprecedented look-back times for direct comparison with cosmological structure formation scenarios. Thus, it is now possible to study all three aspects of galaxy evolution - their morphological-dynamical, chemical and spectral evolution out to redshift larger than six, exploring more than 95% of the age of the universe. These Proceedings of the IAU Symposium 235 report the considerable progress made in recent years on galaxy formation and evolution, and look forward to the expected breakthroughs in the domain of remote galaxies, with ALMA, the ELT and the next generation space telescopes.

Book Formation and Evolution of Galaxy Disks

Download or read book Formation and Evolution of Galaxy Disks written by José G. Funes and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These are the proceedings of the international conference "Formation and Evolution of Galaxy Disks" organized by the Specola Vaticana (the Vatican Observatory). The meeting hosted 198 participants from 26 countries. The program consisted of 61 talks and about 130 poster papers. In 2000 the Vatican Observatory organized a conference on Galaxy Disks and Disk Galaxies, the proceedings of which were published in ASP Conference Series Vol. 230. Since that time, a great amount of work has been done in this very active field. October 2007 was deemed an appropriate time to hold another similar conference where outstanding senior and junior astronomers in this field could air new results. The conference was focused on the formation and evolution of galaxy disks and covered the following topics: (1) properties of nearby galaxy disks; (2) interstellar medium, star formation, and chemical evolution; (3) disk edges, outskirts, and environment; (4) accretion onto disks, interactions, and mergers; (5) secular evolution of disks and bar/spiral driven evolution of galaxies; (6) evolution of disk structural properties; and (7) disk formation in a hierarchical universe. This books is of interest for researchers in extragalactic astronomy. It presents an overview of the relevant results and the progress made in the field in the last seven years."--Publisher's website

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this book is to prepare the ground for coordinated efforts aiming to answer the question: where and when life originated. The appearance of life involves three successive stages: i) the formation of chemical elements and their combination to simple molecules, which is the concern of physicists; ii) the evolution of organized complexity in biomolecules and their reactions, which falls within the field of chemistry; iii) the onset of Darwinian evolution after the appearance of the first cell-like structure, which is studied by biologists. This book focuses on the first two steps of this process with chapters exploring topics such as chemical element abundances; galaxies, galactic magnetic fields and cosmic rays; galactic chemical evolution. Key Features: Contains extensive lists of reference and additional reading. Includes new hypotheses concerning the origin of life. Combines consideration from nuclear physics, astrophysics, astro- and geochemistry. Despite its interdisciplinary nature, this book remains accessible to nonexperts, and would be a valuable companion for both experts and laypeople.

Book Panoramic Views of Galaxy Formation and Evolution

Download or read book Panoramic Views of Galaxy Formation and Evolution written by Tadayuki Kodama and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These proceedings of the first meeting of the Subaru International Conference Series held in December 2007 in Hayama, Japan, provide unique up-to-date overviews of the history of galaxy formation and the evolution of the universe. Fascinating and comprehensive observational results as well as many important theoretical achievements were presented by more than 150 active researchers from more than 15 countries and regions. The conference started off with results from recent cutting-edge observations of the very high-redshift universe extending into the cosmic reionization era, together with some theoretical interpretations and predictions for the first generation of galaxies. The history of mass distributions and structure formation at later cosmic times, including clusters of galaxies, was discussed extensively in presentations based on various panoramic survey data sets. Our aim was to showcase and understand the intrinsic galaxy-formation bias in the high-redshift universe and also the role of external environmental effects during the hierarchical assembly of galaxies into denser regions. Various populations of distant galaxies at different redshifts, discovered and studies by many different techniques, were introduced along with the physical relationship between these populations. Our discussion were aimed at assembling these pieces of jigsaw puzzles together into a panoramic and yet detailed structures of the Milky Way Galaxy and the Local Group galaxies were also presented and discussed as a complementary approach to the studies of the high-redshift Universe. In total, 19 invited talks, 46 contributed talks, and 87 poster papers combined to build up a picture of the history of galaxies over the cosmic age. This book is suitable for researchers who are interested in both observational and theoretical aspects of galaxy formation and cosmology, and especially for students seeking an overview of knowledge about galaxy formation to date."--Publisher's website

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the reviews: "Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969 and it has already become one of the fundamental publications in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics and neighbouring sciences. It is the most important English-language abstracting journal in the mentioned branches. ...The abstracts are classified under more than a hundred subject categories, thus permitting a quick survey of the whole extended material. The AAA is a valuable and important publication for all students and scientists working in the fields of astronomy and related sciences. As such it represents a necessary ingredient of any astronomical library all over the world." Space Science Reviews#1 "Dividing the whole field plus related subjects into 108 categories, each work is numbered and most are accompanied by brief abstracts. Fairly comprehensive cross-referencing links relevant papers to more than one category, and exhaustive author and subject indices are to be found at the back, making the catalogues easy to use. The series appears to be so complete in its coverage and always less than a year out of date that I shall certainly have to make a little more space on those shelves for future volumes."
