Download or read book To Err Is Human written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-03-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts estimate that as many as 98,000 people die in any given year from medical errors that occur in hospitals. That's more than die from motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer, or AIDSâ€"three causes that receive far more public attention. Indeed, more people die annually from medication errors than from workplace injuries. Add the financial cost to the human tragedy, and medical error easily rises to the top ranks of urgent, widespread public problems. To Err Is Human breaks the silence that has surrounded medical errors and their consequenceâ€"but not by pointing fingers at caring health care professionals who make honest mistakes. After all, to err is human. Instead, this book sets forth a national agendaâ€"with state and local implicationsâ€"for reducing medical errors and improving patient safety through the design of a safer health system. This volume reveals the often startling statistics of medical error and the disparity between the incidence of error and public perception of it, given many patients' expectations that the medical profession always performs perfectly. A careful examination is made of how the surrounding forces of legislation, regulation, and market activity influence the quality of care provided by health care organizations and then looks at their handling of medical mistakes. Using a detailed case study, the book reviews the current understanding of why these mistakes happen. A key theme is that legitimate liability concerns discourage reporting of errorsâ€"which begs the question, "How can we learn from our mistakes?" Balancing regulatory versus market-based initiatives and public versus private efforts, the Institute of Medicine presents wide-ranging recommendations for improving patient safety, in the areas of leadership, improved data collection and analysis, and development of effective systems at the level of direct patient care. To Err Is Human asserts that the problem is not bad people in health careâ€"it is that good people are working in bad systems that need to be made safer. Comprehensive and straightforward, this book offers a clear prescription for raising the level of patient safety in American health care. It also explains how patients themselves can influence the quality of care that they receive once they check into the hospital. This book will be vitally important to federal, state, and local health policy makers and regulators, health professional licensing officials, hospital administrators, medical educators and students, health caregivers, health journalists, patient advocatesâ€"as well as patients themselves. First in a series of publications from the Quality of Health Care in America, a project initiated by the Institute of Medicine

Download or read book Regulating Data Monopolies written by Jingyuan Ma and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-24 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the business model of enterprises in the digital economy by taking an economic and comparative perspective. The aim of this book is to conduct an in-depth analysis of the anti-competitive behavior of companies who monopolize data, and put forward the necessity of regulating data monopoly by exploring the causes and characteristics of their anti-competitive behavior. It studies four aspects of the differences between data monopoly and traditional monopolistic behavior, namely defining the relevant market for data monopolies, the entry barrier, the problem of determining the dominant position of data monopoly, and the influence on consumer welfare. It points out the limitations of traditional regulatory tools and discusses how new regulatory methods could be developed within the competition legal framework to restrict data monopolies. It proposes how economic analytical tools used in traditional anti-monopoly law are facing challenges and how competition enforcement agencies could adjust regulatory methods to deal with new anti-competitive behavior by data monopolies.
Download or read book COVID 19 in Dermatology written by Hazel H. Oon and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-29 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first cases of an acute respiratory illness were reported, the pathogen SARS-coV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) and its disease, COVID-19 have disrupted the world and changed the course of medical history. Clinics were under lockdown and supplies of critical drugs such as biologics and meladinine were delayed. The prolonged impact of disease has taken its toll on patients, their careers, medical staff, research and medical education. Shortly after the first landmark studies of COVID-19 vaccine trial data were made known, global mass vaccination programs were underway. Vaccine technology has expanded beyond messenger RNA (mRNA) to include non-replicating viral vectors, inactivated virus, and protein subunits. Cutaneous manifestations of vaccine reactions, including non-mRNA and their morphological patterns, indications and contraindications, vaccine global access, equity, allocation of booster doses, emerging COVID variants and subvariants, waning vaccine and treatment efficacy are the issues that begged to be explored. New oral therapies are available for treatment of COVID-19 but they bring with them drug-drug interactions and potential side effects. This book is a compilation of a concerted effort by dermatologists across the globe to join hands against COVID-19. Each chapter has been written by experts in the field, with first-hand experience and synthesized literature to offer the most up-to-date coverage in the fast-paced, changing landscape of COVID-19 in dermatology. COVID-19 in Dermatology is a valuable resource for dermatologists, dermatology residents and medical students, and general practitioners.

Download or read book Coronavirus Disease COVID 19 Pathophysiology Epidemiology Clinical Management and Public Health Response written by and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-01-25 with total page 1671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume I.A An outbreak of a respiratory disease first reported in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and the causative agent was discovered in January 2020 to be a novel betacoronovirus of the same subgenus as SARS-CoV and named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly disseminated worldwide, with clinical manifestations ranging from mild respiratory symptoms to severe pneumonia and a fatality rate estimated around 2%. Person to person transmission is occurring both in the community and healthcare settings. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently declared the COVID-19 epidemic a public health emergency of international concern. The ongoing outbreak presents many clinical and public health management challenges due to limited understanding of viral pathogenesis, risk factors for infection, natural history of disease including clinical presentation and outcomes, prognostic factors for severe illness, period of infectivity, modes and extent of virus inter-human transmission, as well as effective preventive measures and public health response and containment interventions. There are no antiviral treatment nor vaccine available but fast track research and development efforts including clinical therapeutic trials are ongoing across the world. Managing this serious epidemic requires the appropriate deployment of limited human resources across all cadres of health care and public health staff, including clinical, laboratory, managerial and epidemiological data analysis and risk assessment experts. It presents challenges around public communication and messaging around risk, with the potential for misinformation and disinformation. Therefore, integrated operational research and intervention, learning from experiences across different fields and settings should contribute towards better understanding and managing COVID-19. This Research Topic aims to highlight interdisciplinary research approaches deployed during the COVID-19 epidemic, addressing knowledge gaps and generating evidence for its improved management and control. It will incorporate critical, theoretically informed and empirically grounded original research contributions using diverse approaches, experimental, observational and intervention studies, conceptual framing, expert opinions and reviews from across the world. The Research Topic proposes a multi-dimensional approach to improving the management of COVID-19 with scientific contributions from all areas of virology, immunology, clinical microbiology, epidemiology, therapeutics, communications as well as infection prevention and public health risk assessment and management studies.
Download or read book Multi Sensor Imaging and Fusion Methods Evaluations and Applications volume II written by Zhiqin Zhu and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-07-24 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-sensor image fusion focuses on processing images of the same object or scene acquired by multiple sensors, in which various sensors with multi-level and multi-spatial information are complemented and combined to ultimately yield a consistent interpretation of the observed environment. In recent years, multi-sensor image fusion has become a highly active topic, and various fusion methods have been proposed. Many effective processing methods, including multi-scale transformation, fuzzy inference, and deep learning, have been introduced to design fusion algorithms. Despite the great progress, there are still some noteworthy challenges in the field, such as the lack of unified fusion theories and methods for effective generalized fusion, the lack of fault tolerance and robustness, the lack of benchmarks for performance evaluation, the lack of work on specific applications of multi-sensor image fusion, and so on.
