Book The Structure of Small Molecules and Ions

Download or read book The Structure of Small Molecules and Ions written by Ron Naaman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The workshop on "The structure of small molecules and ions" was held at the Neve-Han guest house, near Jerusalem, Israel on December 13 to 18 in mem ory of the late Professor Itzhak Plesser. Professor Plesser played a central role in the research done both at the Weizmann Institute and at Argonne National Laboratories on the "Coulomb explosion" method. His friends honored his memory by organizing a meeting in which subjects related to Plesser's interests would be discussed. Just a week be fore the conference started we were struck by another tragedy -the death of our graduate student Ms. Hana Kovner, who participated in many of the Coulomb explosion experiments at the Weizmann Institute. We would like to dedicate these proceedings to her memory as well. The goal of the workshop was to bring together chemists and physicists working on different aspects of the structural problems of small molecular en tities. The time seemed appropriate for discussing experimental and theoretical concepts, since in recent years new methods have been introduced, and a large amount of information has been accumulated on systems not studied before, like unstable molecules, ions, van der Waals molecules and clusters. The program of the workshop reflects, we believe, these new developments. The meeting was characterized by intensive discussions in which the weak nesses and strengths of new and of well established concepts were revealed. We hope that it measured up to the high standards Itzhak Plesser maintained all through his scientific life.

Book Chemistry Within Van Der Waals Cluster of Unsaturated Molecules Observation of Cationic Polymerization

Download or read book Chemistry Within Van Der Waals Cluster of Unsaturated Molecules Observation of Cationic Polymerization written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present in this paper the observation of intracluster ion-molecule polymerization reactions within clusters containing molecules which possess double or triple carbon-carbon bonds. This effect is borne out by the observation of unusual magic numbers in the cluster ion distribution only under expansion conditions which favor the production of large neutral clusters. These magic numbers are rationalized in terms of the production of covalently bonded cyclic molecular ions which terminate the cationic polymerization process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The types of forces that are involved in the interactions between molecules vary across a wide spectrum from very strong, as in ion-ion interactions, to the much weaker forces that are involved in van der Waals complexes. This book provides an introduction to the theoretical methods that are used to analyze each sort of force and provide the reader with a guide to the most appropriate method for a given problem. Examples are used to illustrate the points, and the pitfalls that a novice might encounter are outlined. These examples range from very small complexes to much larger systems with biological relevance.

Book Theory of Atomic and Molecular Clusters

Download or read book Theory of Atomic and Molecular Clusters written by Julius Jellinek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence and spectacularly rapid evolution of the field of atomic and molecular clusters are among the most exciting developments in the recent history of natural sciences. The field of clusters expands into the traditional disciplines of physics, chemistry, materials science, and biology, yet in many respects it forms a cognition area of its own. This book presents a cross section of theoretical approaches and their applications in studies of different cluster systems. The contributions are written by experts in the respective areas. The systems discussed range from weakly (van der Waals) bonded, through hydrogen- and covalently bonded, to semiconductor and metallic clusters. The theoretical approaches involve high-level electronic structure computations, more approximate electronic structure treatments, use of semiempirical potentials, dynamical and statistical analyses, and illustrate the utility of both classical and quantum mechanical concepts.

Book Structure Reactivity and Thermochemistry of Ions

Download or read book Structure Reactivity and Thermochemistry of Ions written by Pierre Ausloos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of a 1986 Advanced Study Institute entitled "Structure/Reactivity and Thermochemistry of Ions", held at Les Arcs, France, June 30 to July 11, 1986. The format of a NATO Institute is ideally suited to in-depth communications between scien tists of diverse backgrounds. Particularly in the field of ion physics and chemistry, where on-going research involves physicists, physical chemists, and organic chemists - who use a variety of experimental and theoretical techniques - it is found that in the relaxed but stimula ting atmosphere of a NATO ASI, each professional group provides unique insights, leading to a better definition and solution of problems relating to the properties of gas phase ions. This book presents chapters based on the lectures presented at the Les Arcs ASI. The participants took the initiative to organize a number of specialized workshops - informal discussion groups which considered questions or problem areas of particular interest. The accounts of these sessions, which are also included in this book, make stimulating reading, and include considerable useful information. This Advanced Study Institute is the fourth in a series of NATO-spon sored institutes devoted to the chemistry and physics of ions in the gas phase. The first, in 1974, in Biarritz, France, focussed on "Interactions between Ions and Molecules".

Book Introduction to Cluster Dynamics

Download or read book Introduction to Cluster Dynamics written by Paul-Gerhard Reinhard and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-07-11 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clusters as mesoscopic particles represent an intermediate state of matter between single atoms and solid material. The tendency to miniaturise technical objects requires knowledge about systems which contain a "small" number of atoms or molecules only. This is all the more true for dynamical aspects, particularly in relation to the qick development of laser technology and femtosecond spectroscopy. Here, for the first time is a highly qualitative introduction to cluster physics. With its emphasis on cluster dynamics, this will be vital to everyone involved in this interdisciplinary subject. The authors cover the dynamics of clusters on a broad level, including recent developments of femtosecond laser spectroscopy on the one hand and time-dependent density functional theory calculations on the other.

Book Chemistry Within Molecular Van Der Waals Clusters

Download or read book Chemistry Within Molecular Van Der Waals Clusters written by James F. Garvey and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A subject of great interest in recent years has been the study of the physics of weakly bound van der Waals clusters. These species have been probed in a variety of ways to gain an understanding of their formation and to determine their various physical properties. However, the study of chemical reactions within clusters is especially intriguing since clusters can conceptually bridge the disparate fields of bimolecular gas-phase reaction dynamics and solution chemistry. The ultimate goal of these studies is to obtain an understanding of the factors that govern reactions in solution but which are absent in gas phase processes. By concentrating on the chemistry within these cluster systems it is possible to directly observe how the behavior of the system changes as a function of stepwise solvation. In addition to the typical unimolecular and bimolecular gas-phase chemistry already studied within clusters, our group has recently observed the generation of new cluster product ions which cannot be explained by either of these two known processes. Book Physical Chemistry of Cold Gas Phase Functional Molecules and Clusters

Download or read book Physical Chemistry of Cold Gas Phase Functional Molecules and Clusters written by Takayuki Ebata and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes advanced research on the structures and photochemical properties of polyatomic molecules and molecular clusters having various functionalities under cold gas-phase conditions. Target molecules are crown ethers, polypeptides, large size protonated clusters, metal clusters, and other complex polyatomic molecules of special interest. A variety of advanced frequency and time-domain laser spectroscopic methods are applied. The book begins with the principle of an experimental setup for cold gas-phase molecules and various laser spectroscopic methods, followed by chapters on investigation of specific molecular systems. Through a molecular-level approach and analysis by quantum chemical calculation, it is possible to learn how atomic and molecular-level interactions (van der Waals, hydrogen-bonding, and others) control the specific properties of molecules and clusters. Those properties include molecular recognition, induced fitting, chirality, proton and hydrogen transfer, isomerization, and catalytic reaction. The information will be applicable to the design of new types of functional molecules and nanoparticles in the broad area that includes applied chemistry, drug delivery systems, and catalysts.
