Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the three pillars of sustainability, besides the environment, the interplay of social and economic dimensions provides valuable insight into how society is molded and the key components that should be considere. In terms of social sustainability, processes and framework objectives promote the wellbeing that is integral to the balance of people, planet, and profit. Economic practices consider the system of production, resource allocation, and distribution of goods and services with respect to demand and supply between economic agents. As a result, an economic system is a variant of the social system in which it exists. At present, the forefront of social sustainability research partially encompasses the impact of economic practices on people and society, with notable emphasis centered on the urban environment. Specific interdisciplinary analyses within the scope of sustainability, social development, competitiveness, and motivational management, as well as decision making within the urban landscape, are considered. Book The Changing Academic Profession

Download or read book The Changing Academic Profession written by Ulrich Teichler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview on the major findings of a questionnaire survey of academic profession in international perspective. More than 25,000 professors and junior staff at universities and other institutions of higher education at almost 20 countries from all over the world provide information on their working situation, their views and activities. The study “The Changing Academic Profession” is the second major study of its kind, and changes of views and activities are presented through a comparison of the findings with those of the earlier study undertaken in the early 1990s. Major themes are the academics’ perception of their societal and institutional environments, the views on the major tasks of teaching, research and services, their professional preferences and actual activities, their career, their perceived influence and their overall job satisfaction. Emphasis is placed on the influence of recent changes in higher education: the internationalisation and globalisation, the increasing expectation to provide evidence of the relevance of academic work, and finally the growing power of management at higher education institutions. Overall, the academics surveyed show that worldwide discourses and trends in higher education put their mark on the academic profession, but differences by country continue to be noteworthy. Academics consider themselves to be more strongly exposed to mechanism of regulations, incentives and sanctions as well as various assessments than in the past; yet their own freedom, and responsibilities and influence shape their identity more strongly and are reflected in widespread professional satisfaction.

Book Our Lived Realities Reading Gender in Malaysia Penerbit USM

Download or read book Our Lived Realities Reading Gender in Malaysia Penerbit USM written by Cecilia Ng and published by Penerbit USM. This book was released on 2014-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Lived Realities: Reading Gender in Malaysia is rooted in the concrete experiences of women (and men) in Malaysia. This first gender anthology, produced by the Women’s Development Research Centre (KANITA), is centred on the belief that scholarly discourses should not only be framed at the academic level but that they should also be grounded in people’s lived realities. This anthology is a collection of essays based on such empirical data utilising a feminist framework and a gender lens offering new insights into the understanding and analysis of local and national issues. It maps the landscape of women’s issues which have remained persistent and unresolved over the years – issues which are often seen by policy-makers as inconsequential to economic development, but yet they impact heavily on people’s lives, often violating their rights. This volume is significant in filling the void in the local literature in women’s and gender studies. The essays are relevant and cover a wide range of topics such as gender and literature, violence against women and women’s lack of political representation; women, gender and development discourses; local interventions among poor women; inadequacies of legal codes and procedures; and the shifting boundaries of Islam, jurisprudence and gender in Malaysia. It is a must read for academics, researchers, students – not only in women’s and gender studies but also to those in sociology, law and Islamic jurisprudence, economics and development. It should also be read by policy and decision makers including civil society activists who are concerned with issues of social and gender justice in Malaysia.
