Book China s City Cluster Development in the Race to Carbon Neutrality

Download or read book China s City Cluster Development in the Race to Carbon Neutrality written by Ali Cheshmehzangi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-03 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope of this book is to map China’s city clusters and their individual directions for the national-level strategies in line with the 2060 carbon neutrality plan. Since China announced the carbon neutrality plan in autumn 2020, no study has looked at the role of city clusters in achieving this long-term plan. Hence, this study is believed to be the first attempt to explore this important topic from the city cluster perspective. It explores the challenges, opportunities, and directions of all 19 city clusters, allowing readers to have a clear picture of China’s historical and ongoing progress, as well as the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. In a short time, China’s city clusters have helped boost regional economic development, infrastructure development, trade and business, and better urban–rural integration. With enhanced coordination of connection and transport networks in and between the city clusters, we see a growing number of initiatives beyond just the initial economic strategies. The dual approach of top-down policies and infrastructure systems and bottom-up governance and investments has helped China consider urban–rural development strategies and regional sustainable development. These factors are essential to be explored from the city cluster perspective and in line with China’s sustainable development and carbon neutrality directions. Hence, the book covers these points holistically, ensuring that regional planning and development are favored in the face of uneven urbanization trends. We anticipate this book to be a valuable resource for local governments and authorities, urban planners and practitioners, developers, and urban researchers. While the focus is on China’s city clusters, we believe there are similar examples elsewhere. Hence, lessons learnt from this book could apply to other countries, regions, and subregions. Lastly, the book aims to put regional sustainable development at the heart of longer-term strategies and plans, such as the case of China’s carbon neutrality plan.

Book The Impact Evaluation of Cluster Development Programs

Download or read book The Impact Evaluation of Cluster Development Programs written by Franco Boneu and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do cluster development programs work? Do they fundamentally encourage the essential inter-firm linkages and coordination? Do they lead to innovation and productivity, enterprise development, larger employment, and export growth, and if so, after how long? Do other firms benefit from these programs? This book offers insight into quantitative methods that help answer these questions. Cluster development is a form of modern industrial policy that is spreading across the world to help exploit the externalities emerging from geographical agglomeration and inter-firm coordination. Therefore, rigorous impact evaluations are necessary because they help policymakers understand better ways to design future programs and provide accountability for public resources. The chapters argue that enterprise clusters and the programs to support them are diverse and multidimensional processes that require a variety of instruments to be fully understood and assessed. The book as a whole gathers various methodological essays and quantitative tests of complementary tools and approaches, emphasizing their usefulness and effectiveness in coordination with one another. Most importantly, it asserts that policy evaluation is crucial, in particular when it comes to cluster development programs, to ensure the best use of public resources, the accountability of beneficiaries, and most of all to feed the necessary learning to improve the design and implementation of public policies for enterprise development.

Book Role of Clustering in Provision of Economic Growth

Download or read book Role of Clustering in Provision of Economic Growth written by T.N. Litvinova and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under current economic conditions, society’s business structure once again faces the phenomenon of stagnating markets. This recessive state, often discussed in a variety of scientific works, explains the behaviour of financial and economic indicators in the business vector of the global economy. As such, it is obvious that various regions throughout the world require a “breath of fresh air”, that is, new steps towards positive changes of the quality of their economic growth. As shown in this volume, the resolution of crises and other manifestations of economic instability are related to the phenomenon of clustering, which has, since the second half of the 20th century, become of increasing popularity around the world. The contributors here explore aspects of the formation of modern economic clusters, discussing the advantages and negative aspects of clustering and the phenomenon of “underdevelopment whirlpools” as a manifestation of clustering. In addition, they analyse the contradictions of clustering, the fusion of clustering into small and medium enterprises, and cluster initiatives, and develop a methodological approach to cluster formation under modern conditions. The book will be of particular interest to postgraduate students, scientists, and economic specialists, as well as the general reader wishing to learn more about the problems of the phenomenon of clustering in various regions throughout the world.

Linking theoretic knowledge with empirical observations, a simulation model (based in the N/K method) is developed, which explains when and why the cluster's architecture assists or hampers adaptability. It is found that architectures with intermediate degrees of division of labor and more collective governance forms foster adaptability.

Book Routledge Handbook of Industry and Development

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Industry and Development written by John Weiss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Industry and Development is a global overview of industrialisation. Each chapter will provide readers with contemporary insights into this this essential aspect of economic development. Industrialisation has been at the forefront of discussion on economic development since the earliest days of development economics. But over the last fifty years, the manufacturing sectors of different countries and regions have grown at strikingly different rates. In 1960 developing countries took a very small share of global manufacturing production. Today the position had changed radically with fast growth of manufacturing in many parts of what was originally the developing world, particularly in China and the rest of East Asia. On the other hand, countries in Africa and parts of Latin America have been largely left behind by this process of industrialisation. This volume aims to illuminate this uneven development and takes stock of the current issues that hinder and support industrialisation in low and middle income economies. This Handbook is a collection of chapters on different aspects of industrialisation experience in a range of countries. Key themes include, the role of manufacturing in growth, the nature of structural change at different stages of development, the role of manufacturing in employment creation, alternative options for trade and industrial policy, the key role of technology and technical change, and the impact of globalisation and the spread of global value chains and foreign direct investment on prospects for industrialisation. Several chapters discuss individual country experiences with examples from India, Mexico, South Africa and Tanzania, as well as an overview of African industrialisation. This authoritative Handbook will be a key reference source for those studying or wishing to understand contemporary economic development. Offering inspiration and direction for future research, this landmark volume will be of crucial importance to all development economics scholars and researchers.

Book Building Engines for Growth and Competitiveness in China

Download or read book Building Engines for Growth and Competitiveness in China written by Douglas Zhihua Zeng and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals fascinating insights into the two remarkable engines fueling China's economic success: special economic zones (SEZs) and industrial clusters. Douglas Zeng provides an excellent overview of China's SEZs and clusters, their background, success factors, challenges, and possible solutions. The five well-written case studies delve into the rich detail of the evolution and success of SEZs and clusters in key growth regions of China. The views on the distinctions and convergence of SEZs and clusters are fresh and in-depth. As China celebrates the 30th anniversary of its SEZ policy, the publication of this book could not have been more timely. With growing interest in China's experience, this book is a must-read for policy makers, development practitioners, business leaders, and scholars worldwide who are eager to learn from China's success.---Eric Roll Hansen President of Economic Transformations Group, Inc. China's economic rise continues to amaze. This book provides important new insights into two dimensions that, when combined, are emblematic of the nature of China's economic transformation. The creation of special economic zones (SEZs) has been a core element of the government's strategy to drive growth through a process of selective reforms in specific regions. The emergence of clusters has been a market-driven response to the new opportunities opening up in China. The case studies in this book suggest that Chinese SEZs and clusters have often been successful precisely because pragmatic policies allow them to become mutually reinforcing. This book will help researchers and policy makers better understand China's growth, past and current, as well as the lessons the country holds for the effective use of SEZs and clusters in organizing economic policies.---Christian Ketels Principal Associate of the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School and Director of the Competitiveness Institute (TCI)

Book The Cluster Organization

Download or read book The Cluster Organization written by Anna Maria Lis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cluster organizations are becoming more and more popular, both in developing and developed countries. Considering the development of cluster policy and the related dynamic growth of cluster initiatives in the world, the lack of sufficient knowledge on the development of cooperation in cluster organizations inhibits their development and, in many cases, causes their complete disintegration. The book provides new important elements to the current system of knowledge, filling in cognitive and research gaps in the scientific literature on problems related to cooperation in cluster organizations. The most valuable features for the reader concern the epistemological, methodological, and application aspects. The new element includes a theoretical concept, which refers to the trajectory of development of cooperative relationships in cluster organizations that facilitates the understanding and explanation of mechanisms responsible for cooperation in such organizations. The concept also has great practical advantages, especially for people implementing the idea of "clustering": coordinators, facilitators, and members of cluster organizations as well as politicians and public authorities are responsible for shaping and implementing the cluster policy. It will be of value to researchers, academics, and students in fields with an interest in organizational studies, management of innovation and technology, strategic management, industrial economics, and economic geography.

Book Integration and Clustering for Sustainable Economic Growth

Download or read book Integration and Clustering for Sustainable Economic Growth written by Elena G. Popkova and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the importance of integration and clustering in creating sustainable economic growth. Modern economic conditions demonstrate the need for governmental stimulation of cluster initiatives in entrepreneurship, and make it necessary to study the experience of developed countries in the sphere of stimulation of cluster initiatives in entrepreneurship, and to offer recommendations for improving the system of state stimulation of these initiatives. The authors conclude that at present, innovational economy is an economic system that functions on the basis of business networks, as this model offers innovational cooperation between specialists from various scientific and technical spheres, between organizations of various sizes (large, medium, and small), and between groups of various types of companies. Cluster strategy in modern global practice is one of the most important tools of public policy for increasing the competitiveness of national economies. This means that the most competitive spheres develop on the basis of the cluster principle, and support for cluster building increases a country’s economic competitiveness.

Book Economic Planning and Industrial Policy in the Globalizing Economy

Download or read book Economic Planning and Industrial Policy in the Globalizing Economy written by Murat Yülek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses national development planning in the context of a globalized world economy. National economic development planning, the process of defining strategic economic objectives for a country and designing policies and institutional frameworks to attain them, was popular in many countries in the 1960s and 1970s. Over time it lost its appeal. More recently, with globalization accelerating and economic competition increasing, it is making a comeback in different countries under different forms. National planning in this new era is different than the earlier quantitative planning approaches. It employs different tools, such as strategic visions and action plans, revived forms of physical infrastructure planning, industrial policy, and cluster policy. Built on the research of international scholars with firsthand knowledge of the countries in question, this volume presents and evaluates current national planning strategies and policy worldwide. It will be of interest to both academicians who study and teach globalization and development as well as policy makers who may use it as a reference as they contemplate their own strategies.
