Download or read book Cannabis written by Chris Duvall and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to its best-known use, any mention of cannabis tends to bring up jokes about the munchies or debates about marijuana and legalized drug use. But this not-so-innocent flowering plant was one of the first to be domesticated by humans, and it has been used in spiritual, therapeutic, and even punitive applications ever since—in addition to its more recreational purpose. Despite all the hoopla surrounding cannabis, however, we actually understand relatively little about it in the human and ecological past. In Cannabis, Chris Duvall explores the botanical and cultural history of one of our most widely distributed crops, presenting an even-handed look at this heady little plant. Providing a global historical geography of cannabis, Duvall discusses the manufacture of hemp and its role in rope-making, clothing, and paper, as well as cannabis’s use as oil and fuel. His focus, though, is on its most prevalent use: as a psychoactive drug. Without advocating for either the prohibition or legalization of the drug, Duvall analyzes a wide range of works to offer a better understanding of both stances and, moreover, the diversity of human-cannabis relationships across the world. In doing so, he corrects the overly simplistic portrayals of cannabis that have dominated discourse on the subject, arguing that we need to understand the big picture in order to improve how the plant is managed worldwide. Richly illustrated and highly accessible, Cannabis is an essential read to understand the rapidly evolving debate over the legalization of marijuana in the United States and other countries.

Download or read book Japan s Empire Disaster written by Jean Sénat Fleury and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A former judge with a passion for history, Jean Sénat Fleury was born in Haiti and currently lives in Boston. He wrote several historical books, such as: The Stamp Trial, Jean-Jacques Dessalines: Words from Beyond the Grave, Toussaint Louverture: The Trial of the Slave Trafficking, Adolf Hitler: Trial in Absentia in Nuremberg, The Trial of Osama Bin Laden, Hirohito Guilty or Innocent: The Trial of the Emperor. His new book, Japan's Empire Disaster, provides an understanding of the expansionist policy practiced by Japan during the end of the nineteenth and the first period of the twentieth century. From the adoption of the Meiji constitution in 1889 and the first period of the Sh?wa era (1927-1945), the military controlled the Japanese constitutional government. The result was years of political instability, more internal conflicts, violence, murders, assassinations, overseas aggression, and war crimes. The book demonstrates that in Japan, during the Pacific War, the real driving force of the war was the Imperial Japanese Army and the Imperial Japanese Navy. Hirohito, as supreme commander, gave full support to the army and navy. On multiple occasions, he sanctioned many government policies. In fact, he was responsible for the atrocities that the Japanese troops committed in Asia during the Pacific War. Japan's Empire Disaster is a book of information and training. The book describes Japan's opening to modernization with the 1853 arrival of commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry in the country, and also details the history of the wars launched by Emperor Meiji and Emperor Hirohito to build Japan's empire in the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries.

This book was released on 2009-07-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalisation has not led to the ‘death of geography’. Intensified relations between communities in different parts of the world have only highlighted the need for understanding and managing phenomena on a variety of geographic scales. From global warming to credit crunch, and from epidemics to terrorism, causes and solutions are sought on local, regional, national as well as inter-continental levels. With the advent of Geospatial Technology, scholars, policymakers and entrepreneurs have valuable tools in hand to proceed. This book offers the first systematic account of the science behind this mental and technological revolution. Tracing the adoption and dissemination of Geospatial Technology in a range of disciplines, it examines the impact this technology has had, and is likely to have, on the explanation of spatial behaviour, phenomena and processes. At the same time, stressing innovative usage, it explores scientific contributions to technology advancement.

Download or read book Temporality and Trinity written by Peter Manchester and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temporality and Trinity argues that there is deep homology between the roles of temporal problematic in Augustine’s On Trinity and Heidegger’s Being and Time. Although Heidegger was aware of On Trinity, the claim is not that he writes under its influence. Rather, Manchester moves from the temporal problematic of Being and Time to the psychological explication of the human image of God in On Trinity, schematized as memory, understanding, and will. Formal and phenomenological parallels allow interpretation of that psychological triad as a temporal problematic in the manner of Being and Time. In a sense, this is to read Augustine as influenced by Heidegger. But the aim is more constructive than that. Establishing a link between trinitarian theology and Being and Time opens a more direct way of benefiting from it in theology than Heidegger’s own assumptions. It puts philosophy in a position to confront New Testament theology directly, in its own historicality, without digression into anything like philosophy of religion.

Download or read book Marine Diesel Engines written by Nigel Calder and published by Adlard Coles. This book was released on 2003 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigel Calder, a diesel mechanic for more than 25 years, is also a boatbuilder, cabinetmaker, and machinist. He and his wife built their own cruising sailboat, Nada, a project they completed in 1984. Calder is author of numerous articles for Yachting Monthly and many other magazines worldwide, as well as the bestselling Boatowner's Practical and Technical Cruising Manual and Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual, both published by Adlard Coles Nautical. Here, in this goldmine of a book, is everything the reader needs to keep their diesel engine running cleanly and efficiently. It explains how diesel engines work, defines new terms, and lifts the veil of mystery that surrounds such engines. Clear and logical, this extensively illustrated guide will enable the reader to be their own diesel mechanic. As Nigel Calder says: 'there is no reason for a boatowner not to have a troublefree relationship with a diesel engine. All one needs is to set the engine up correctly in the first place, to pay attention to routine maintenance, to have the knowledge to spot early warning signs of impending trouble, and to have the ability to correct small ones before they become large ones.'
