Download or read book Full Surrogacy Now written by Sophie Lewis and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where pregnancy is concerned, let every pregnancy be for everyone. Let us overthrow, in short, the “family” The surrogacy industry is estimated to be worth over $1 billion a year, and many of its surrogates around the world work in terrible conditions—deception, wage-stealing and money skimming are rife; adequate medical care is horrifyingly absent; and informed consent is depressingly rare. In Full Surrogacy Now, Sophie Lewis brings a fresh and unique perspective to the topic. Often, we think of surrogacy as the problem, but, Full Surrogacy Now argues, we need more surrogacy, not less! Rather than looking at surrogacy through a legal lens, Lewis argues that the needs and protection of surrogates should be put front and center. Their relationship to the babies they gestate must be rethought, as part of a move to recognize that reproduction is productive work. Only then can we begin to break down our assumptions that children “belong” to those whose genetics they share. Taking collective responsibility for children would radically transform our notions of kinship, helping us to see that it always takes a village to make a baby.

Book excerpt: A Universal History of Infamy' was a multi-pronged exhibition that opened across three different art spaces in Los Angeles County, with the support of the Getty Foundation, under Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA. The ?A? in the title announces the shortcomings of any ?universal history? or comprehensive exhibition survey, which is particularly relevant considering the varied interests and experiences of US Latino and Latin American artists. The artists included upend any notion of absoluteness, whether it be in relationship to what defines Latin America, the art associated with it, or the methods of approaching its complex history. In addition to curatorial essays???all different in format and scope???this publication offers a look into the different perspectives, approaches, and scales highlighted at each of the show?s venues: an encyclopedic museum (LACMA), a school (Charles White Elementary School), and an artist residency complex (18th Street Arts Center).00Exhibition: Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, USA (20.08.2017 - 19.02.2018) / Charles White Elementary School, Los Angeles, USA (09.12.2017 - 06.10.2018) / 18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica, USA (09.09.2017 - 15.12.2017).

Download or read book Aftercast written by Agnieszka Gratza and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aftercast is published in the context of the research and exhibition project the humility of plaster (2016-2018), initiated by Florian Roithmayr as a new partnership between the Museum of Classical Archaeology and Kettle's Yard at the University of Cambridge, and Wysing Arts Centre. Moulding and casting are widely used techniques in modern and contemporary art making. Their use and application can be found in many other areas of production and material transformation not immediately associated with art practices, and in times before casting became an acceptable form of sculptural production in its own right. Plaster as a material remains the same: its inherent properties and qualities don't change. Moulding and casting are ancient techniques of giving and taking form and shape to objects and sculptures, and they continue to do so. And yet the way casts are symbolized, the way meaning and values are attributed to these works cast in plaster, has often shifted. Aftercast includes texts by Agnieszka Gratza and Alexander Massouras and was designed by Sara De Bondt, printed by Albe de Coker and is published by Tenderbooks.
