Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is childhood like in Finland? What kind of practical solutions have been created and evaluated that aim at both providing good childhood experiences and supporting children’s positive development? What practices aim to prevent child exclusion from regular education and social experiences and to foster children’s healthy development in emotional, social, and behavioural terms? This book considers the reality of childhood in Finland. It discusses the realisation and evaluation of early childhood education and addresses aspects of research and practice concerning children under the age of 10. It examines the growth and development of young children, how learning and teaching are organised, practices of rearing children and the state of child care in Finland. Contributors represent a variety of universities and sub disciplines in the science of education and focus on perspectives of children’s well-being, special viewpoints of early childhood education, care, and research in Finland. This book was originally published as a special issue of Early Child Development and Care.
Download or read book The Social Psychology of Clothing written by Susan B. Kaiser and published by Fairchild Books & Visuals. This book was released on 1997 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single glance at our clothing reveals a wealth of information about how we perceive ourselves, each other, and our place in society. In this classic text, Susan B. Kaiser brings to the surface the unconscious thought processes we use to decide not just how clothes look, but what they mean. In a new section written especially for this updated edition, Kaiser addresses the increasingly multicultural emphasis of the study of clothing and appearance. She also reexamines fashion in terms of gender, ethnicity, sexuality, and social class, offering a more broad-based and inclusive vision of the social psychology of clothing.

Download or read book Personal Influence written by Elihu Katz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1955, "Personal Influence" reports the results of a pioneering study conducted in Decatur, Illinois, validating Paul Lazarsfeld's serendipitous discovery that messages from the media may be further mediated by informal "opinion leaders" who intercept, interpret, and diffuse what they see and hear to the personal networks in which they are embedded. This classic volume set the stage for all subsequent studies of the interaction of mass media and interpersonal influence in the making of everyday decisions in public affairs, fashion, movie-going, and consumer behavior. The contextualizing essay in Part One dwells on the surprising relevance of primary groups to the flow of mass communication. Peter Simonson of the University of Pittsburgh has written that "Personal Influence was perhaps the most influential book in mass communication research of the postwar era, and it remains a signal text with historic significance and ongoing reverberations...more than any other single work, it solidified what came to be known as the dominant paradigm in the field, which later researchers were compelled either to cast off or build upon." In his introduction to this fiftieth-anniversary edition, Elihu Katz discusses the theory and methodology that underlie the Decatur study and evaluates the legacy of his coauthor and mentor, Paul F. Lazarsfeld.

Download or read book Seeking a Role written by Brian Harrison and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this, the first of two self-standing volumes bringing The New Oxford History of England up to the present, Brian Harrison begins in 1951 with much of the empire intact and with Britain enjoying high prestige in Europe. The United Kingdom could still then claim to be a great power, whose welfare state exemplified compromise between Soviet planning and the USA’s free market. When the volume ends in 1970, no such claims carried conviction. The empire had gone, central planning was in trouble, and even the British political system had become controversial. In an unusually wide-ranging, yet impressively detailed volume, Harrison approaches the period from unfamiliar directions. He explains how British politicians in the 1950s and 1960s responded to this transition by pursuing successive roles for Britain: worldwide as champion of freedom, and in Europe as exemplar of parliamentary government, the multi-racial society, and economic planning. His main focus, though, rests not on the politicians but on the decisions the British people made largely for themselves: on their environment, social structure and attitudes, race relations, family patterns, economic framework, and cultural opportunities. By 1970 the consumer society had supplanted postwar austerity, the socialist vision was fading, and 'the sixties' (the theme of his penultimate chapter) had introduced new and even exotic themes and values. Having lost an empire, Britain was still resourcefully seeking a role: it had yet to find it.
Download or read book The Uganda Martyrs and the Need for Appropriate Role Models in Adolescents Moral Formation written by Charles Lwanga Mubiru and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uganda, like elsewhere in the world, is experiencing a moral decline. Many in Uganda are concerned that this necessitates acquainting the nation's young people with appropriate Christian role models, beginning with an understanding of God, Jesus Christ, and the Saints, particularly the Ugandan martyrs. The book's author envisages no substantial moral renewal if Ugandan adults themselves do not provide a good moral example and create a favorable moral environment. Otherwise, Ugandan young people will be building "a personal identity through trial and error, without any goalpost in sight" and thus perpetuating a state of moral decline. Download or read book Theories of Adolescent Development written by Barbara M. Newman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescence is both universal and culturally constructed, resulting in diverse views about its defining characteristics. Theories of Adolescent Development brings together many theories surrounding this life stage in one comprehensive reference. It begins with an introduction to the nature of theory in the field of adolescence including an analysis of why there are so many theories in this field. The theory chapters are grouped into three sections: biological systems, psychological systems, and societal systems. Each chapter considers a family of theories including scope, assumptions, key concepts, contributions to the study of adolescence, approaches to measurement, applications, and a discussion of strengths and limitations of this family. A concluding chapter offers an integrative analysis, identifying five assumptions drawn from the theories that are essential guides for future research and application. Three questions provide a focus for comparison and contrast: How do the theories characterize the time and timing of adolescence? What do the theories emphasize as domains that are unfolding in movement toward maturity? Building on the perspective of Positive Youth Development, how do the theories differ in their views of developmental resources and conditions that may undermine development in adolescence? - Includes biological, psychological and sociological theories - Identifies historical roots, assumptions, key concepts, applications, measurement, strengths, and limitations of each theory - Compares and contrasts theories - Concludes with an integrated perspective across theories
