Book Closing the Candor Chasm

Download or read book Closing the Candor Chasm written by Paul Paolozzi and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Candor stands as the keystone element in creating the foundation of trust in the Army, yet the topic is muted. Stewards of the Army Profession build trust through authentic communication -- in education, training, and modeled in application. Candor was previously included in Army Doctrine, yet nearly no mention of it currently exists in professional military education and dialogue. Through personal experiences and review of literature, two examples -- the demands placed on the Army Reserve Components and a review of the Army's counseling and evaluation environment -- serve as illustrations where candor requires revitalization. Candor must be reinforced to be valued or it remains peripheral, serving as a lesson that is equally damaging to individual character as is it institutionally to the Army.

Book Redefining the Modern Military

Download or read book Redefining the Modern Military written by Nathan Finney and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection will expand upon and refine the ideas on the role of ethics and the profession in the 21st century. The authors delve into whether Samuel Huntington and Morris Janowitz still ring true in the 21st century; whether training and continuing education play a role in defining a profession; and if there is a universal code of ethics required for the military as a profession. Redefining the Modern Military is unique in how it treats the subject of ethics and the military profession, as well as the types of writers it brings on board to address this topic. The book puts a significant emphasis on individual agency for military professionalism as opposed to broad organizational or cultural change. Such a review of these topics is necessary because the process of serious, intellectual self-reflection is a requirement--especially in a profession that involves life and death of people and nations.

Book The Future of Land Warfare

Download or read book The Future of Land Warfare written by Michael E. O'Hanlon and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens if we bet too heavily on unmanned systems, cyber warfare, and special operations in our defense? In today's U.S. defense policy debates, big land wars are out. Drones, cyber weapons, special forces, and space weapons are in. Accordingly, Pentagon budget cuts have honed in on the army and ground forces: this, after the long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, seems like an appealing idea. No one really wants American boots on the ground in bloody conflicts abroad. But it is not so easy to simply declare an end to messy land wars. A survey of the world's trouble spots suggests that land warfare has more of a future than many now seem to believe. In The Future of Land Warfare, Michael O'Hanlon offers an analysis of the future of the world's ground forces: Where are large-scale conflicts or other catastrophes most plausible? Which of these could be important enough to require the option of a U.S. military response? And which of these could in turn demand significant numbers of American ground forces in their resolution? O'Hanlon is not predicting or advocating big American roles in such operations—only cautioning against overconfidence that we can and will avoid them. O'Hanlon considers a number of illustrative scenarios in which large conventional forces may be necessary: discouraging Russia from even contemplating attacks against the Baltic states; discouraging China from considering an unfriendly future role on the Korean peninsula; handling an asymmetric threat in the South China Sea with the construction and protection of a number of bases in the Philippines and elsewhere; managing the aftermath of a major and complex humanitarian disaster superimposed on a security crisis—perhaps in South Asia; coping with a severe Ebola outbreak not in the small states of West Africa but in Nigeria, at the same time that country falls further into violence; addressing a further meltdown in security conditions in Central America.

Book Mars Is Away from Shelter

Download or read book Mars Is Away from Shelter written by P. S. Rain and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-05 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year is 2051. Every probe sent to reconnoiter up close of Candor Canyon, Mars has failed. Accidents? NASA Director, Ken Hsu, thinks not. Suspecting a sinister hand, he surreptiously re-directs the latest probe sent to Mars from its destined mission plan, toward Candor where it finds an anomaly, an ancient structure not wrought by natural random processes. DoD immediately steps in to investigate, much to the chagrin of President Diane Keynes, who worries not only about the ever-increasing influence DoD exerts over space exploration, but also fears any semblance of catastrophe will sink her re-election bid in the coming year. Blinded by ambition, and her hatred for Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Henry Santos, she is unaware of an odious danger much closer to her than a dead alien ruin on Mars, much more present and quite alive, threatening her administration, her sanity, and her life. Though tough, strong willed, and astute, she needs help. Will she get it before it's too late? At risk is more than her singular life. All humanity on Earth could suffer should she fail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first English translation of an essential Austrian novel about life in early-twentieth-century Vienna, as seen through a wide and varied cast of characters. The Strudlhof Steps is an unsurpassed portrait of Vienna in the early twentieth century, a vast novel crowded with characters ranging from an elegant, alcoholic Prussian aristocrat to an innocent ingenue to “respectable” shopkeepers and tireless sexual adventurers, bohemians, grifters, and honest working-class folk. The greatest character in the book, however, is Vienna, which Heimito von Doderer renders as distinctly as James Joyce does Dublin or Alfred Döblin does Berlin. Interweaving two time periods, 1908 to 1911 and 1923 to 1925, the novel takes the monumental eponymous outdoor double staircase as a governing metaphor for its characters’ intersecting and diverging fates. The Strudlhof Steps is an experimental tour de force with the suspense and surprise of a soap opera. Here Doderer illuminates the darkness of passing years with the dazzling extravagance that is uniquely his.
