By addressing a number of cutting-edge applications, together with the relevant physical and mathematics fundamentals, the book provides readers with a comprehensive overview of the current research work in the field. Though the book’s primary emphasis is on the aerospace context, it also addresses further important applications, e.g. in ground transportation and energy.

Book Active Flow Control II

Download or read book Active Flow Control II written by Rudibert King and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-06 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest in the field of active flow control (AFC) is steadily increasing. In - cent years the number of conferences and special sessions devoted to AFC org- ized by various institutions around the world continuously rises. New advanced courses for AFC are offered by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Ast- nautics (AIAA), the European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion (ERCOFTAC), the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM), the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI), to name just a few. New books on AFC are published by prominent colleagues of our field and even a new periodical, the ‘International Journal of Flow Control’, appeared. Despite these many activities in AFC it was felt that a follow-up of the highly successful ‘ACTIVE FLOW CONTROL’ Conference held in Berlin in 2006 was appropriate. As in 2006, ‘ACTIVE FLOW CONTROL II’ consisted only of invited lectures. To sti- late multidisciplinary discussions between experimental, theoretical and numerical fluid dynamics, aerodynamics, turbomachinary, mathematics, control engineering, metrology and computer science parallel sessions were excluded. Unfortunately, not all of the presented papers made it into this volume. As the preparation and printing of a book takes time and as this volume should be available at the conf- ence, the Local Organizing Committee had to set up a very ambitious time sch- ule which could not be met by all contributors.

Book Vortex Generator Jet Flow Control in Highly Loaded Compressors

Download or read book Vortex Generator Jet Flow Control in Highly Loaded Compressors written by João Carvalho Baiense (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A flow control method for minimizing losses in a highly loaded compressor blade was analyzed. Passive and active flow control experiments with vortex generator jets were conducted on a seven blade linear compressor cascade to demonstrate the potential application of passive flow control on a highly loaded blade. Passive flow control vortex generator jets use the pressure distribution generated by air flow over the blade profile to drive jets from the pressure side to the suction side. Active flow control was analyzed by pressuring the blade plenum with an auxiliary compressor unit. Active flow control decreased profile losses by approximately 37% while passive flow control had negligible impact on the profile loss of a highly loaded blade. Passive flow control was able to achieve a jet velocity ratio, jet velocity to upstream velocity, of 0.525. The success of active flow control with a velocity ratio of 0.9 suggests there is potential for passive flow control to be effective. The research presented in this thesis is motivated by the potential savings in the applications of passive flow control in gas turbine axial compressors by increasing the aerodynamic load of each stage. Increased stage loading that is properly controlled can reduce the number of stages required to achieve the desired pressure compression ratio.

Book Advances in Critical Flow Dynamics Involving Moving Deformable Structures with Design Applications

Download or read book Advances in Critical Flow Dynamics Involving Moving Deformable Structures with Design Applications written by Marianna Braza and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-10 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on the latest knowledge concerning critical phenomena arising in fluid-structure interaction due to movement and/or deformation of bodies. The focus of the book is on reporting progress in understanding turbulence and flow control to improve aerodynamic / hydrodynamic performance by reducing drag, increasing lift or thrust and reducing noise under critical conditions that may result in massive separation, strong vortex dynamics, amplification of harmful instabilities (flutter, buffet), and flow -induced vibrations. Theory together with large-scale simulations and experiments have revealed new features of turbulent flow in the boundary layer over bodies and in thin shear layers immediately downstream of separation. New insights into turbulent flow interacting with actively deformable structures, leading to new ways of adapting and controlling the body shape and vibrations to respond to these critical conditions, are investigated. The book covers new features of turbulent flows in boundary layers over wings and in shear layers immediately downstream: studies of natural and artificially generated fluctuations; reduction of noise and drag; and electromechanical conversion topics. Smart actuators as well as how smart designs lead to considerable benefits compared with conventional methods are also extensively discussed. Based on contributions presented at the IUTAM Symposium “Critical Flow Dynamics involving Moving/Deformable Structures with Design applications”, held in June 18-22, 2018, in Santorini, Greece, the book provides readers with extensive information about current theories, methods and challenges in flow and turbulence control, and practical knowledge about how to use this information together with smart and bio-inspired design tools to improve aerodynamic and hydrodynamic design and safety.

Book The Boundary Layer Behaviour of Highly Loaded Compressor Cascade at Transonic Flow Conditions

Download or read book The Boundary Layer Behaviour of Highly Loaded Compressor Cascade at Transonic Flow Conditions written by H. Hoheisel and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of efficient blade profiles for gas turbine compressors can no longer be effectively carried out through the use of correlations of 2D-cascade data. For the description of the real flow field three dimensional effects have to be taken into account. Modern theoretical calculation methods which involve the determination of blade profile pressure distribution and the associated boundary layer parameters, are now becoming accepted practice. However before the engine designer can have confidence in these new methods the predicted performance must be demonstrated to be in good agreement with experimental data. It is the purpose of the work reported in this contribution to present an accurate set of experimental measurements of blade profile pressure distributions and boundary layer parameters under quasi-3D-flow conditions and to compare these with the predicted performance for a high deflection transonic compressor cascade. It is shown that for conditions near minimum loss incidence the agreement between measured and predicted values is achieved to an adequate engineering standard and that the two most important aspects, choking flow and boundary layer separation (H12> 2.8) are well predicted. Also the data presented could be used to further update and improve the current prediction methods.

Book Transonic Two dimensional Flow Analysis of Compressor Cascade with Spltter Vanes

Download or read book Transonic Two dimensional Flow Analysis of Compressor Cascade with Spltter Vanes written by P. R. Dodge and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A transonic relaxation program was utilized to analyze the inviscid flow through a cascade without splitters in order to verify the results of a previous experimental investigation. The analysis showed that viscous effects play a large part in the development of the flow field in the transonic flow regime. This was demonstrated by the following: (1) inviscid flow is guided far better by the blades than the real flow, and (2) the blade surfaces are more highly loaded in the inviscid flow than in the experimentally observed viscous real flow. Following the analysis of inviscid flow through a cascade without the splitters, the program was modified to analyze the cascade flow with splitters. The results of the analysis indicated that (1) viscous effects were more pronounced with splitters present in the flow field, and (2) flow conditions (incidence and flow split) at the splitter leading edge were different from those observed experimentally. This made optimization of the splitter location through inviscid analysis a matter of questionable utility. A simplified scheme for deriving splitter passage flow areas to avoid choking was employed to develop two modified splitter configurations that were analyzed with use of the transonic relaxation program.
