Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of existence of c10sed geodesics on a Riemannian manifold and the properties of the corresponding periodic orbits in the geodesic flow has been the object of intensive investigations since the beginning of global differential geo metry during the last century. The simplest case occurs for c10sed surfaces of negative curvature. Here, the fundamental group is very large and, as shown by Hadamard [Had] in 1898, every non-null homotopic c10sed curve can be deformed into a c10sed curve having minimallength in its free homotopy c1ass. This minimal curve is, up to the parameterization, uniquely determined and represents a c10sed geodesic. The question of existence of a c10sed geodesic on a simply connected c10sed surface is much more difficult. As pointed out by Poincare [po 1] in 1905, this problem has much in common with the problem ofthe existence of periodic orbits in the restricted three body problem. Poincare [l.c.] outlined a proof that on an analytic convex surface which does not differ too much from the standard sphere there always exists at least one c10sed geodesic of elliptic type, i. e., the corres ponding periodic orbit in the geodesic flow is infinitesimally stable.

Book Closed Geodesics on Riemannian Manifolds

Download or read book Closed Geodesics on Riemannian Manifolds written by Wilhelm Klingenberg and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains expository lectures from the CBMS Regional Conference held at the University of Florida, 1982. The author considers a space formed by all closed curves in which the closed geodesics are characterized as the critical points of a functional, an idea going back to Morse. This exposition gives a refined version of Morse's approach which has several advantages over the old one-in particular, it possesses a canonical \mathbf O(2)-action.

Book Behavior of Distant Maximal Geodesics in Finitely Connected Complete 2 dimensional Riemannian Manifolds

Download or read book Behavior of Distant Maximal Geodesics in Finitely Connected Complete 2 dimensional Riemannian Manifolds written by Takashi Shioya and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph studies the topological shapes of geodesics outside a large compact set in a finitely connected, complete, and noncompact surface admitting total curvature. When the surface is homeomorphic to a plane, all such geodesics behave like those of a flat cone. In particular, the rotation numbers of the geodesics are controlled by the total curvature. Accessible to beginners in differential geometry, but also of interest to specialists, this monograph features many illustrations that enhance understanding of the main ideas.

Book Riemannian Geometry and Geometric Analysis

Download or read book Riemannian Geometry and Geometric Analysis written by Jürgen Jost and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present textbook is a somewhat expanded version of the material of a three-semester course I gave in Bochum. It attempts a synthesis of geometric and analytic methods in the study of Riemannian manifolds. In the first chapter, we introduce the basic geometric concepts, like dif ferentiable manifolds, tangent spaces, vector bundles, vector fields and one parameter groups of diffeomorphisms, Lie algebras and groups and in par ticular Riemannian metrics. We also derive some elementary results about geodesics. The second chapter introduces de Rham cohomology groups and the es sential tools from elliptic PDE for treating these groups. In later chapters, we shall encounter nonlinear versions of the methods presented here. The third chapter treats the general theory of connections and curvature. In the fourth chapter, we introduce Jacobi fields, prove the Rauch com parison theorems for Jacobi fields and apply these results to geodesics. These first four chapters treat the more elementary and basic aspects of the subject. Their results will be used in the remaining, more advanced chapters that are essentially independent of each other. In the fifth chapter, we develop Morse theory and apply it to the study of geodesics. The sixth chapter treats symmetric spaces as important examples of Rie mannian manifolds in detail.

Book Introduction to Global Analysis

Download or read book Introduction to Global Analysis written by John Douglas Moore and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last century, global analysis was one of the main sources of interaction between geometry and topology. One might argue that the core of this subject is Morse theory, according to which the critical points of a generic smooth proper function on a manifold determine the homology of the manifold. Morse envisioned applying this idea to the calculus of variations, including the theory of periodic motion in classical mechanics, by approximating the space of loops on by a finite-dimensional manifold of high dimension. Palais and Smale reformulated Morse's calculus of variations in terms of infinite-dimensional manifolds, and these infinite-dimensional manifolds were found useful for studying a wide variety of nonlinear PDEs. This book applies infinite-dimensional manifold theory to the Morse theory of closed geodesics in a Riemannian manifold. It then describes the problems encountered when extending this theory to maps from surfaces instead of curves. It treats critical point theory for closed parametrized minimal surfaces in a compact Riemannian manifold, establishing Morse inequalities for perturbed versions of the energy function on the mapping space. It studies the bubbling which occurs when the perturbation is turned off, together with applications to the existence of closed minimal surfaces. The Morse-Sard theorem is used to develop transversality theory for both closed geodesics and closed minimal surfaces. This book is based on lecture notes for graduate courses on “Topics in Differential Geometry”, taught by the author over several years. The reader is assumed to have taken basic graduate courses in differential geometry and algebraic topology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series is devoted to the publication of monographs and high-level textbooks in mathematics, mathematical methods and their applications. Apart from covering important areas of current interest, a major aim is to make topics of an interdisciplinary nature accessible to the non-specialist. The works in this series are addressed to advanced students and researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics. In addition, it can serve as a guide for lectures and seminars on a graduate level. The series de Gruyter Studies in Mathematics was founded ca. 35 years ago by the late Professor Heinz Bauer and Professor Peter Gabriel with the aim to establish a series of monographs and textbooks of high standard, written by scholars with an international reputation presenting current fields of research in pure and applied mathematics. While the editorial board of the Studies has changed with the years, the aspirations of the Studies are unchanged. In times of rapid growth of mathematical knowledge carefully written monographs and textbooks written by experts are needed more than ever, not least to pave the way for the next generation of mathematicians. In this sense the editorial board and the publisher of the Studies are devoted to continue the Studies as a service to the mathematical community. Please submit any book proposals to Niels Jacob. Book Kikagakuteki Henbun Mondai

Download or read book Kikagakuteki Henbun Mondai written by Seiki Nishikawa and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A minimal length curve joining two points in a surface is called a geodesic. One may trace the origin of the problem of finding geodesics back to the birth of calculus. Many contemporary mathematical problems, as in the case of geodesics, may be formulated as variational problems in surfaces or in a more generalized form on manifolds. One may characterize geometric variational problems as a field of mathematics that studies global aspects of variational problems relevant in the geometry and topology of manifolds. For example, the problem of finding a surface of minimal area spanning a given frame of wire originally appeared as a mathematical model for soap films. It has also been actively investigated as a geometric variational problem. With recent developments in computer graphics, totally new aspects of the study on the subject have begun to emerge. This book is intended to be an introduction to some of the fundamental questions and results in geometric variational problems, studying variational problems on the length of curves and the energy of maps. The first two chapters treat variational problems of the length and energy of curves in Riemannian manifolds, with an in-depth discussion of the existence and properties of geodesics viewed as solutions to variational problems. In addition, a special emphasis is placed on the facts that concepts of connection and covariant differentiation are naturally induced from the formula for the first variation in this problem, and that the notion of curvature is obtained from the formula for the second variation. The last two chapters treat the variational problem on the energy of maps between two Riemannian manifolds and its solution, harmonic maps. The concept of a harmonic map includes geodesics and minimal submanifolds as examples. Its existence and properties have successfully been applied to various problems in geometry and topology. The author discusses in detail the existence theorem of Eells-Sampson, which is considered to be the most fundamental among existence theorems for harmonic maps. The proof uses the inverse function theorem for Banach spaces. It is presented to be as self-contained as possible for easy reading. Each chapter may be read independently, with minimal preparation for covariant differentiation and curvature on manifolds. The first two chapters provide readers with basic knowledge of Riemannian manifolds. Prerequisites for reading this book include elementary facts in the theory of manifolds and functional analysis, which are included in the form of appendices. Exercises are given at the end of each chapter. This is the English translation of a book originally published in Japanese. It is an outgrowth of lectures delivered at Tohoku University and at the Summer Graduate Program held at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications at the University of Minnesota. It would make a suitable textbook for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. This item will also be of interest to those working in analysis.
