Book Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative

Download or read book Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

Download or read book Ophthalmic Care written by Janet Marsden and published by M&K Update Ltd. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 907 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an international team of ophthalmic practitioners, this authoritative book is a vital resource not only for ophthalmic professionals, but for any healthcare professional who cares for patients with eye problems. In the ten years since the first edition was published, practice has moved on, as has the evidence for practice. This second edition draws on the passion and goodwill of the original team of authors, complemented by other colleagues, to fully revise and update the text in line with new findings, new practice and new and exciting treatments. The book is broadly divided into three sections. The first section considers the structure and function of the eye, as well as the basic principles of ophthalmology and eye examination. The second section considers patient care in diverse settings, as well as work-related issues and patient education. It also includes two entirely new chapters on eye banking and global eye health. The third section takes a systematic approach to patient care, working from the front to the back of the eye, discussing some of the common disorders affecting each structure (such as the lens or cornea) or group of structures (such as the eyelids or lacrimal drainage system). The book concludes with a very useful glossary of ophthalmic terms. Some aspects of practice discussed in the text are, of necessity, UK based, but these are clearly indicated and, wherever possible, principles (rather than specifics) are addressed and readers are directed to local policies and interpretations. The first edition of this book became a core text for ophthalmic nursing, in particular, and for the education of ophthalmic nurses across the world. This new edition will provide a comprehensive, up-to-date, evidence-based resource for all ophthalmic healthcare professionals. Contents include: • Physiology of vision • Optics • Pharmacology • Examination of the eye • Visual impairment • Patient education • Work and the eye • Care of the adult ophthalmic patient in an inpatient setting • The care of the child undergoing ophthalmic treatment • Developments in day care surgery for ophthalmic patients • Ophthalmic theatre nursing • The care of patients presenting with acute problems • Eye banking • Global eye health • The eyelids and lacrimal drainage system • The conjunctiva • The cornea • The sclera • The lens • The uveal tract • The angle and aqueous • The retina and vitreous • The orbit and extraocular muscles • Visual and pupillary pathways and neuro-ophthalmology • The eye and systemic disease

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinics in Optometry: A Compilation of Eye Clinics Covering Fully All Errors of Refraction and Anomalies of Muscles, With Methods of Examination, Tests and Corrections, as Used in Actual Practice; A d104-Book of the Practice of Optometry This book has been written not so much for the optical student as for the practitioner of optometry, and it is therefore really a manual of practice. No attempt has been made to commence with elementary matters and systematically pass on to more advanced subjects, but the cases have been taken as they came and as they are likely to be met with in every-day practice. At the same time the explanation of the principles involved in each case has been made as simple as possible, and the method of management made clear, so that even a beginner in the work will have no difficulty in understanding both the theory and the practice in each case. As these clinics cover the whole range of optometrical practice, the value of this book as a work of reference in difficult cases becomes evident, as the proper method of management can be found in a moment. It is hoped the spirit of this book may inspire the reader to more painstaking and accurate work, and kindle in him an ambition for the advancement of optometry. Book excerpt: It started a century ago. Otis R. Wolfe, a trained surgeon specializing in eye care, selected Marshalltown, Iowa, as the place to start his business. That was the beginning of Wolfe Eye Clinic, and over the next century of practice, it would become a leader in eye care, with cutting edge technology for eye disease treatment and surgery. Originally, innovations came via cataract procedures, like when Wolfe brought over a groundbreaking technique from Spain in the 1920s. His sons carried the practice into a new era of advancements in the mid-20th century. And as new ophthalmologists joined the practice later on, Wolfe Eye Clinic grew beyond Marshalltown and became a statewide presence, specializing in cataracts, retina, LASIK, pediatrics, glaucoma and more, all with a patient-centric approach. "Wolfe Eye Clinic: A Century in Sight" takes you through these 100 years of practice-from the establishment of an ophthalmology leader to the statewide organization and institution Wolfe Eye Clinic is today-and the people who made it possible.
