Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Climatological Data, Vol. 26: Kentucky Section; January, 1921 Unseasonably warm weather prevailed from the 3d to 17th, mean daily temperatures ranging from 10° to 28° above normal on many days during this period. Wheat and grass made con siderable growth; blossoms appeared on maple trees and some early plants; plum and peach buds advanced to such a stage of development as to alarm fruit growers; and vegetation generally seemed to indicate that spring was at hand, Growth was checked by a change to colder on the 18th, followed by heavy snow 011 the 19-20th, with temperatures below normal on most days during the remainder of the month. This period of cold weather was undoubtedly of great benefit in stopping the untimely plant development, particularly in preventing the premature blossoming of fruit trees. On account of the fact that. Wheat had been. Sown late in order_to avoid fly damage, it had not advanced to a stage where freezing weather would cause serious injury; nevertheless this cold spell was bendficial in retarding its growth and returning it to the dormant condition. Several hard freezes occurred in the period, i8th-2lst, but winter grains were protected bv snow on the 20th and Qist. Freezes in the period 23d-25th came without much snow covering, but seem to have caused little damage to wheat because of its vigorous Condition. Some plowing and sewing oats was accomplished in the southern counties during the first week, but the soil was generally too wet to be worked during the remainder of the month. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Climatological Data: Kentucky Section; Volumes 45-46, 1940-1941 Temperatures varied considerably but were most frequently below normal. Few and scattered that they had no effect on vegetation. Came evident early in the month that most peaches had been killed by the sub-zero temperatures in January. Other fruit buds remained entirely dormant, with some uncertainty as to their vitality. The snow cover that had protected grains through the long period of severe cold disappeared during the first week, leaving the ground deeply frozen and thawing slowly. Winter grains were exposed for several days, but with the ground in this condition the freezing and shallow thawing caused little injury. The melting of the snow and the accompanying rain fully restored surface water supplies for the first time this winter. The short interval of moderate temperature preceding the middle of the month was followed by heavy snow that re mained only a few days but served as protection for grains during the short period of hard freezes. The last decade was decidedly cold, with frequent freezing and thawing of the bare saturated surface. There was some complaint of damage to winter wheat on the heavier soils at this time. The appearance of the plants at the end of the month indicated that this injury was not serious. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
