Book Climate of Reno Nevada

Download or read book Climate of Reno Nevada written by Brian F. O'Hara and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Reno is located in far-west central Nevada in the lee of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Reno is on the boundary between two distinct climatic regimes. The first regime is the dry high desert climate of the western Great Basin. The second regime is that of the alpine Sierra Nevada. Both regimes greatly influence Reno's climate. As a result of its location in the high desert of the Great Basin, Reno experiences large temperature ranges on both a diurnal and an annual scale. During the summer afternoon highs are often above 90° F, but at night the air mass can cool down into the 50s. In the last five or six years however, nighttime lows during July and early August sometimes do not make it below 65° F. As will be seen in the tables in the Temperature section below, this warming trend has been seen in summer high temperatures, but not to the extent that it is reflected in the nighttime temperatures."--Introduction.

Book Evaluation of Climate Change Effects on Water Resources in Eastern Nevada

Download or read book Evaluation of Climate Change Effects on Water Resources in Eastern Nevada written by John Abatzoglou and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The following report is the result of a 2009 to 2012 climate investigation project between the Southern Nevada Water Association [sic] (SNWA) and the Desert Research Institute (DRI) that emphasized a selected study area encompassing portions of the eastern and southern Great Basin... Within the study area was a smaller focus area consisting of several valleys and mountain ranges. The primary objective of the project was to utilize an adequate compilation of existing data to evaluate impacts to potentially extractable groundwater that may arise from projected future changes in climate parameters over a timeframe of 50 to 100 years. The secondary objective was to superpose best- and worst-case conditions of a prolonged wet climatic, or pluvial, interval as well as for a severe drought onto the forward climate projections."--Abstract.

Book 9 M y Record of Southern Nevada Climate from Yucca Mountain Secondary Minerals

Download or read book 9 M y Record of Southern Nevada Climate from Yucca Mountain Secondary Minerals written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yucca Mountain, Nevada, is presently the object of intense study as a potential permanent repository for the Nation's high-level radioactive wastes. The mountain consists of a thick sequence of volcanic tuffs within which the depth to water table ranges from 500 to 700 meters below the land surface. This thick unsaturated zone (UZ), which would host the projected repository, coupled with the present day arid to semi-arid climate, is considered a favorable attribute of the site. Evaluation of the site includes defining the relation between climate variability, as the input function or driver of site- and regional-scale ground-water flow, and the possible future transport and release of radionuclides to the accessible environment. Secondary calcite and opal have been deposited in the UZ by meteoric waters that infiltrated through overlying soils and percolated through the tuffs. The oxygen isotopic composition ([delta][sup 18]O values) of these minerals reflect contemporaneous meteoric waters and the[delta][sup 13]C values reflect soil organic matter, and hence the resident plant community, at the time of infiltration. Recent U/Pb age determinations of opal in these occurrences, coupled with the[delta][sup 13]C values of associated calcite, allow broadbrush reconstructions of climate patterns during the past 9 M.y.

Book Nevada s Changing Wildlife Habitat

Download or read book Nevada s Changing Wildlife Habitat written by George E. Gruell and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For millennia the ecology of the Great Basin has evolved because of climate change and the impacts of human presence. Nevada’s Changing Wildlife Habitat is the first book to explain the transformations in the plants and animals of this region over time and how they came about. Using data gleaned from archaeological and anthropological studies, numerous historical documents, repeat photography, and several natural sciences, the authors examine changes in vegetation and their impact on wildlife species and the general health of the environment. They also outline the choices that current users and managers of rangelands face in being good stewards of this harsh but fragile environment and its wildlife.
