Book Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol s Clean Development Mechanism

Download or read book Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol s Clean Development Mechanism written by Margie Orford and published by Juta and Company Ltd. This book was released on 2004 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming and climate change pose a dire threat to life. The Kyoto Protocol is the UN treaty committing signatories to dealing with climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is a non-technical account of what inspired people to transform the dry language of this international climate change treaty into measurable improvements in people's lives in four countries (Brazil, Bangladesh, Indonesia and South Africa). These stories come to life through a kaleidoscope of photographs and children's artworks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adoption of the Kyoto Protocol in December 1997 was a major achievement in the endeavour to tackle the problem of global climate change at the dawn of the 21st century. After many years of involvement in the negotiation process, the book's two internationally recognised authors now offer the international community a first hand and inside perspective of the debate on the Kyoto Protocol. The book provides a comprehensive scholarly analysis of the history and content of the Protocol itself as well as of the economic, political and legal implications of its implementation. It also presents a perspective for the further development of the climate regime. These important features make this book an indispensable working tool for policy makers, negotiators, academics and all those actively involved and interested in climate change issues in both the developed and developing world.

Book Reading the Kyoto Protocol

Download or read book Reading the Kyoto Protocol written by Raoul Weiler and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kyoto Protocol became law in February 2005--eight years after its conception as a framework for reducing emissions and a full four years after the United States abandoned it. But while President George W. Bush embarrassed much of the scientific community by challenging the veracity of the greenhouse effect, and thus the impetus for Kyoto, officials elsewhere expressed far different concerns. Reading the Kyoto Protocol explores their qualms and objections to everything from Kyoto's controversial policies on emissions trading to the question of a "post-Kyoto era." Contributors include internationally known philosophers, researchers, and environmentalists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I had the pleasure of participating at the two conferences which form the basis of this book: as a chairman at the 2007 The Hague Conference 'Tackling Climate Change - An appraisal of the Kyoto Protocol and options for the future' and as a speaker at the 2006 Siena Conference' The Kyoto Protocol and beyond: a legal perspective'. I would like to thank my colleagues Wybe Douma, Leonardo Massai and Massimiliano Montini for those opportunities, and although I was, unfortu nately, unable to contribute a paper to this book due to time constraints, I am glad to be able to say a few words on the issue by means of this foreword. The timing of the two conferences was well chosen: the period between the Siena Conference (June 2006) and The Hague Conference (March 2007) encapsu lated perfectly the period of the drafting, the presentation and the approval of the 'Integrated Energy and Climate Change Package', as presented by the European th Commission on the 10 of January 2007 and as approved by the Spring European th th Council of the 8 and 9 of March 2007. The importance of the Commission's package and the Council's conclusions must be strongly emphasized. They set, at the EU level, legally binding targets regarding the reduction of greenhouse gas of energy, and biofuels.

Book The Clean Development Mechanism CDM

Download or read book The Clean Development Mechanism CDM written by Ariel Dinar and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, countries took up the difficult task of finding a common approach that would slow down the build-up of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere and delay changes to the planet''s climate. A widespread concern among many of the participants in the newly formed United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was that the emission reductions needed to significantly affect climate change would cost so much that it could jeopardize the chances of a coordinated international solution. To address this concern, several flexible mechanisms were designed, including the CDM.While many applaud the CDM, others are concerned with its performance and achievements, and whether or not it will be continued beyond 2012. Critics argue, among other things, that it has not delivered on the sustainable development objective for which it was established and that projects are unevenly distributed, both geographically and sectorally.Much analysis is available on CDM, but very little comprehensive analysis, addressing various aspects of CDM is available. With a major decision for its continuation, a multi-dimensional analysis would be needed. This book is about the economic assessment of certain (not certain) CDM performances, and its future sustainability and trajectory.

Book Post Kyoto Climate Governance

Download or read book Post Kyoto Climate Governance written by Asim Zia and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the midst of human-induced global climate change, powerful industrialized nations and rapidly industrializing nations are still heavily dependent on fossil fuels. Even if we arrive at a Hubbert’s peak for oil extraction in the 21st century, the availability of technologically recoverable coal and natural gas will mean that fossil fuels continue to be burned for many years to come, and our civilization will have to deal with the consequences far into the future. Climate change will not discriminate between rich and poor nations, and yet the UN-driven process of negotiating a global climate governance regime has hit serious roadblocks. This book takes a trans-disciplinary perspective to identify the causes of failure in developing an international climate policy regime and lays out a roadmap for developing a post-Kyoto (post-2012) climate governance regime in the light of lessons learned from the Kyoto phase. Three critical policy analytical lenses are used to evaluate the inherent complexity of designing post-Kyoto climate policy: the politics of scale; the politics of ideology; and the politics of knowledge. The politics of scale lens focuses on the theme of temporal and spatial discounting observed in human societies and how it impacts the allocation of environmental commons and natural resources across space and time. The politics of ideology lens focuses on the themes of risk and uncertainty perception in complex, pluralistic human societies. The politics of knowledge lens focuses on the themes of knowledge and power dynamics in terms of governance and policy designs, such as marketization of climate governance observed in the Kyoto institutional regime.

Book Kyoto Protocol Emissions Trading and Reduction Technologies for Climate Change Mitigation

Download or read book Kyoto Protocol Emissions Trading and Reduction Technologies for Climate Change Mitigation written by Nicolas Fernandez Quesada and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Document from the year 2013 in the subject Environmental Sciences, , language: English, abstract: Global warming is now universally accepted as being the greatest environmental threat to mankind in the current century. The impacts are staggering. Antarctic ice is thinning at increasingly rapid rates, with correspondingly massive influxes of fresh water into the world’s oceans. All these changes are due mostly to human activities, particularly in raising the levels of CO2, a major greenhouse gas (GHG). Atmospheric concentrations of CO2 have risen 35% since the Industrial Revolution. This increase is primarily due to anthropogenic activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. Reducing the rate of GHG emissions will be an enormous challenge for everyone throughout the world which must be fought on many fronts. This work broadly analyses the main issues and subjects concerning several devices and laws for climate change mitigation. Chapter 1: Climate change and Green House Gases Emissions Chapter 2: Kyoto Protocol and GHG emissions reduction Chapter 3: Emissions trading Chapter 4: GHG emissions estimation and inventory Chapter 5: GHG emission reduction technologies

Book Inter linkages

Download or read book Inter linkages written by W. Bradnee Chambers and published by United Nations University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997 delegates to the third session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), agreed by consensus to adopt the Kyoto Protocol under which industrialized countries would reduce their combined greenhouse gas emissions by an average 5.2% from their 1992 levels. To have any hope of achieving these emission reductions and averting global climate catastrophe will require a fundamental shift in the way in which energy is produced and the way it is used. Inter-linkages examines the Climate Change Convention in the context of potential synergies and conflicts that could arise between it and the World Trade Organization, international investment agreements and private and contractual trade law.

Book Climate Change Under Peak Oil The Kyoto Protocol and the Clean Development Mechanism

Download or read book Climate Change Under Peak Oil The Kyoto Protocol and the Clean Development Mechanism written by Oscar Maria Caccavale and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change has turned out to be a major issue. The Clean Development Mechanism is the tool provided by the Kyoto protocol to address emission reduction and to promote sustainable development in developing countries. The challenge to an alternative development path, arising by increasing global warming, may be fostered from recent oil price hiking. Thus the CDM might be re-thought as tool to address climate change under peek oil.

Book The Collapse of the Kyoto Protocol and the Struggle to Slow Global Warming

Download or read book The Collapse of the Kyoto Protocol and the Struggle to Slow Global Warming written by David G. Victor and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even as the evidence of global warming mounts, the international response to this serious threat is coming unraveled. The United States has formally withdrawn from the 1997 Kyoto Protocol; other key nations are facing difficulty in meeting their Kyoto commitments; and developing countries face no limit on their emissions of the gases that cause global warming. In this clear and cogent book-reissued in paperback with an afterword that comments on recent events--David Victor explains why the Kyoto Protocol was never likely to become an effective legal instrument. He explores how its collapse offers opportunities to establish a more realistic alternative. Global warming continues to dominate environmental news as legislatures worldwide grapple with the process of ratification of the December 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The collapse of the November 2000 conference at the Hague showed clearly how difficult it will be to bring the Kyoto treaty into force. Yet most politicians, policymakers, and analysts hailed it as a vital first step in slowing greenhouse warming. David Victor was not among them. Kyoto's fatal flaw, Victor argues, is that it can work only if emissions trading works. The Protocol requires industrialized nations to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases to specific targets. Crucially, the Protocol also provides for so-called "emissions trading," whereby nations could offset the need for rapid cuts in their own emissions by buying emissions credits from other countries. But starting this trading system would require creating emission permits worth two trillion dollars--the largest single invention of assets by voluntary international treaty in world history. Even if it were politically possible to distribute such astronomical sums, the Protocol does not provide for adequate monitoring and enforcement of these new property rights. Nor does it offer an achievable plan for allocating new permits, which would be essential if the system were expanded to include developing countries. The collapse of the Kyoto Protocol--which Victor views as inevitable--will provide the political space to rethink strategy. Better alternatives would focus on policies that control emissions, such as emission taxes. Though economically sensible, however, a pure tax approach is impossible to monitor in practice. Thus, the author proposes a hybrid in which governments set targets for both emission quantities and tax levels. This offers the important advantages of both emission trading and taxes without the debilitating drawbacks of each. Individuals at all levels of environmental science, economics, public policy, and politics-from students to professionals--and anyone else hoping to participate in the debate over how to slow global warming will want to read this book.

Book The Clean Development Mechanism and Sustainable Development

Download or read book The Clean Development Mechanism and Sustainable Development written by Nora Nabil El-Baba and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change and what can be done to mitigate it, as well as the sustainable d evelopment are all topics on the top of the World's agenda. One of the mechanism s of the Kyoto Protocol, the Clean Development Mechanism is part of the global c arbon market and promises to achieve a double fold goal; emission reduction and sustainable development. In this project, I start with an overview about the Kyoto Protocol and the Cl ean Development Mechanism, how it works and its objectives. After I examine the literature about the efficiency of the CDM projects in the third chapter, I move to the empirical work in the forth. Measuring the efficiency of the CDM project s, by comparing the number of the Certified Emission Reductions issued to the fo recasted, indicates a huge diversity among countries and projects. There appears to be an overestimation of the CERs in order to attract foreign investors. More over, I find that the top polluters are countries with the highest GDP and popul ation, the result that matches the literature. However, the likelihood of a coun try to host a CDM project does not appear to be its poverty or its need. The maj or determinant of a country to host a CDM project appears to be its Gross Capita l Formation. This result contradicts the main goal of the CDM which is the susta inable development of the Least Developed World.
