Book Into the Planet

Download or read book Into the Planet written by Jill Heinerth and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renowned cave diver takes readers on “a thrill ride into unfamiliar worlds”—exploring the hidden depths of our oceans and sunken caves (Publishers Weekly). More people have died exploring underwater caves than climbing Mount Everest, and we know more about deep space than we do about the depths of our oceans. In this thrilling firsthand account, Jill Heinerth blends science, adventure, and memoir to bring readers face-to-face with the terror and beauty of earth’s final frontier—and the extremes of human capability. One of the world’s foremost cave divers, Heinerth’s achievements include leading a team that discovered the ancient watery remains of Mayan civilizations and becoming the first person in history to dive deep into an Antarctic iceberg. In Into the Planet, she vividly recounts everything from discovering new species and examining our finite freshwater reserves to the prejudices women face when pursuing careers underwater.

Book The Men We Need

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brant Hansen
  • Publisher : Baker Books
  • Release : 2022-03-29
  • ISBN : 1493434047
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book The Men We Need written by Brant Hansen and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world needs real men, real bad. And there are all sorts of conflicting ideas and messages about what a "real man" is (and is not). Is a real man one who hunts, loves sports, grills meat, fixes cars, and climbs mountains? Sure, sometimes. But that's not really the point of being a man and it's not the purpose for which men were made. Into our cultural confusion, Brant Hansen paints a refreshingly specific, compelling picture of what men are made to be: "Keepers of the Garden." Protectors and defenders. He calls for men of all interests and backgrounds (including "avid indoorsmen" like himself) to be ambitious about the right things and to see themselves as defenders of the vulnerable, with whatever resources they have. Using short chapters loaded with must-have wisdom and Brant's signature humor, The Men We Need explains the essence of masculinity in a fresh, thoughtful, and entertaining way that will inspire any man who dares to read it.

Book House Rules

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jodi Picoult
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2010-04-03
  • ISBN : 1439199310
  • Pages : 544 pages

Download or read book House Rules written by Jodi Picoult and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-04-03 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Small Great Things and the modern classics My Sister’s Keeper, The Storyteller, and more, comes a “complex, compassionate, and smart” (The Washington Post) novel about a family torn apart by a murder accusation. When your son can’t look you in the eye…does that mean he’s guilty? Jacob Hunt is a teen with Asperger’s syndrome. He’s hopeless at reading social cues or expressing himself well to others, though he is brilliant in many ways. He has a special focus on one subject—forensic analysis. A police scanner in his room clues him in to crime scenes, and he’s always showing up and telling the cops what to do. And he’s usually right. But when Jacob’s small hometown is rocked by a terrible murder, law enforcement comes to him. Jacob’s behaviors are hallmark Asperger’s, but they look a lot like guilt to the local police. Suddenly the Hunt family, who only want to fit in, are thrust directly in the spotlight. For Jacob’s mother, it’s a brutal reminder of the intolerance and misunderstanding that always threaten her family. For his brother, it’s another indication why nothing is normal because of Jacob. And for the frightened small town, the soul-searing question looms: Did Jacob commit murder? House Rules is “a provocative story in which [Picoult] explores the pain of trying to comprehend the people we love—and reminds us that the truth often travels in disguise” (People).

Book excerpt: This book is both a novel and essays about work life. In the novel, David is a young man intent on moving up in the company, Protech, which designs security systems. To do this, he steals an idea for a new product from a junior employee and sells it to senior management as his own. The idea takes off but David has to constantly having to do questionable things to keep his status as golden boy. He spies on another colleague for fear of an idea which might overtake his; he demands his boss' job to keep control of his project; and he browbeats his team into saying the product is ready for release when it is clearly not. He twists and turns to stay on top.The parallel stories are of Becky, David's mother, who walks away at the end of her career to pursue a lifelong dream and of Gord, David's father, who is a brilliant but difficult employee who has never fit into organizational life.Throughout the book, there are hyperlinks to essays which discuss aspects of the story and how they might apply to the reader's life. For example, one essay discusses how David gets caught up in the office politics and whether you have to do it, too. Similarly, another essay asks whether always being honest at work, such as Gord maintains he is, is good or bad for your career and psyche. Becky's essays largely deal with whether and how you can work at what you are really passionate about rather than just put food on the table. The essays can be read as the novel is being read or after. All of them pose questions about how to deal with the dark side of work.
