Book excerpt: Once a single 998-acre farm, Cleveland Park can trace its origins to 1740, when large country estates, such as Rosedale, Twin Oaks, Tregaron, and Red Tops, were located here. Alexander Graham Bell and President Grover Cleveland, the neighborhood's namesake, owned such estates, a few of which remain to this day. Although a mere 60 houses dotted the landscape in 1903, the building boom of the 1920s created numerous houses and commercial buildings along Connecticut Avenue. Today, the neighborhood is a modern urban residential neighborhood with many fine examples of American architecture and urban planning concepts. Cleveland Park documents the cultural, social, environmental, and architectural evolution of the neighborhood, offering photographs from the opening night of the famous art deco Uptown Theater and of the first strip mall in America, the Park and Shop. Combined with interior and exterior images from some of the celebrated apartment houses that remain and those of the now-demolished Bureau of Standards complex, this volume is certain to both delight and surprise the reader.

Stinchcomb, aged 27, closed his annual report as chief engineer of parks for the City of Cleveland with a challenge to create an outer ring of parks and boulevards to benefit all residents of Greater Cleveland. By 1912, legislation authorizing it had been enacted, and three acres of land were acquired through a donation. This formed the nucleus of the vast park system that now includes almost 21,000 acres. Cleveland Metroparks has provided generations of area residents with readily accessible facilities for year-round recreation. The park provides opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, swimming, cycling, golfing, and boating. Use of the park, which crosses the boundaries of approximately 48 communities in the Cleveland area, has become a tradition for many families.

Book In Search of the Mount Cleveland Five

Download or read book In Search of the Mount Cleveland Five written by Terry G. Kennedy and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two days after Christmas in 1969, five young, forward thinking mountaineers set out to climb Mount Cleveland, the highest peak in Glacier National Park. Their interest was the previously unclimbed north face, a project that had been in the works for several years. The Mount Cleveland Five arranged boat transportation from the Canadian end of Waterton Lake to the American end, just ahead of ice-over to begin their journey. They were never seen alive again. The Mount Cleveland tragedy will remain one of the most enigmatic mountaineering accidents in the United States. It was not unlike the disappearance of the Edmund Fitzgerald into the stormy waters of Lake Superior five years later. In both cases, no one returned to tell what happened. In this tale, the author fast-tracks himself into mountaineering at age 15. His quest is to vindicate the Mount Cleveland Five by climbing the north face with the brother of one of the missing. In Search of the Cleveland Five is a true story about the coming-of-age, racing through 22 years of climbing endeavors with colorful Montana climbers and their close calls, antics and tears. The grief and inspiration of the Mount Cleveland avalanche never leaves the rear view mirror. The story ends on a peak in the Alaska Range as the author attempts a new route with the son of his longtime climbing partner. The slope they are ascending threatens to avalanche- and history is on the verge of repeating itself. "Let's get the hell outta here!" -- book jacket.

Book Manufactured Insecurity

Download or read book Manufactured Insecurity written by Esther Sullivan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufactured Insecurity is the first book of its kind to provide an in-depth investigation of the social, legal, geospatial, and market forces that intersect to create housing insecurity for an entire class of low-income residents. Drawing on rich ethnographic data collected before, during, and after mobile home park closures and community-wide evictions in Florida and Texas—the two states with the largest mobile home populations—Manufactured Insecurity forces social scientists and policymakers to respond to a fundamental question: how do the poor access and retain secure housing in the face of widespread poverty, deepening inequality, and scarce legal protection? With important contributions to urban sociology, housing studies, planning, and public policy, the book provides a broader understanding of inequality and social welfare in the United States today.
