  • Publisher : University Press of America
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN : 9780761806394
  • Pages : 164 pages

Download or read book Governing America written by L. Peter Schultz and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1997 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governing America is intended to illuminate the character of the American constitutional order as it was created and as it functions today. It examines both the distant--philosophic--background of the Constitution as well as the immediate context in which that document was drafted. It then examines the Constitution itself, the separation of powers, and the three departments of the government that were created in 1787, arguing that the government created then was intended to be impressively powerful, potentially prudent, and partially popular. In fact, the new government was recognized by its creators as potentially dangerous given the scope and character of its powers, as well as its partially popular character. Early attempts to render this new government "safe" are examined, focusing on the presidencies of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Andrew Jackson. In this context, the phenomena of political parties and federalism are considered as tools used to render our government as safe as possible. Finally, Governing America examines the link between this powerful government and politics as practiced in the United States today, arguing that our politics are deeply affected by our continuing commitment to a powerful, prudent, and partially popular government.

Book Distorted Visions

Download or read book Distorted Visions written by Dr. Gayles Evans and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Dr. Gayles Evans set out to research how a distorted vision created the violent obsession of those who were bullying others, she discovered that this mental abuse changed many lives. Numerous victims of bullying were stalked, and some who were abused committed suicide. In Distorted Vision, she provides glimpses into her own life and upbringing as she explores the topic of how people make a variety of counterproductive choices for living as a result of distorted perceptions of reality. The research into that topic led Evans into other areas of how having a distorted vision affects society, such as alcoholism, drug abuse, discrimination, sexual harassment, violence against women, and bullying. Distorted Vision discusses how no one is physically or mentally perfect. Everyone must come to grips with their own demons and fantasies and accept them before a clear lens can be formed. All must find their own ways into the light and clear their own paths to develop a defined vision of life.

Book Emancipatory Climate Actions

Download or read book Emancipatory Climate Actions written by Laurence L. Delina and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-02 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book calls for a collective strengthening of the progressive dimension of climate action in the face of continued myopic governmental response. Delina argues that consent must be revoked and power realigned to avoid suffering the consequences of unabated climate change. He looks back at the mechanisms that make previous social mobilizations successful to design strategies that would advance a new hegemonic agenda. This new agenda calls for the culturing of contemporary human societies towards a hegemony characterized by just emancipations and sustainable transformations. Mining select histories from India, the United States, the Philippines, and Burma, the book explores topics including visioning and identity building; framing; triggering pressure; boosting publicity; and diversifying networks as strategic tools to the repertoires of climate action groups, organizations, and institutions. It will be of great value to academics and practitioners, as well as to anyone interested in how to actively combat climate change.
